Key FA signings for 2008

TEXANRED

Texan-American
In my own opinion I think the Texans need to worry about there own before pursuing outside players.

The following Texans are FA for next year who I believe we should keep.

Will Demps, this man solidifies our secondary and brings an attitude to our team. Don't let this turn out to be another Marlon McCree situation.

Andre Davis, stretches the field and has a knack for the End Zone. So he can't block for the run as well as KW, but I thought the WR was supposed to catch and score TD's. Silly me.

Salaam, no not as a starter, but as a solid leader and spot fill in. I don't think he has enough left in the tank to start another 16 game season, but he does have enough left to help the Texans with there future. All he has been is reliable.

Dayne. For the record if Dayne is our leading rusher at the end of next season I think I will commit Harry Karry. Dayne's best days are in the late half of the season so I believe once we get a solid starter he will be an invaluable number 2 in the winter months. And like Salaam, he has been reliable since being here, he may not be setting the world on fire but he is consistent.

With the exception of Demps the other 3 mentioned are solid depth for this team and can contribute.

Am I missing anyone?

I agree. Demps has been a great pick up. Imagine how much better he would be without that bionic arm brace.

According to Houston Pro Football:

Unrestricted Free Agents
Alexander, Roc
Anderson, Charlie
Barry, Kevin
Bruener, Mark
Clark, Danny
Davis, Andre'
Dayne, Ron
Demps, Will
Earl, Glenn
Hutchins, Von
Kalu, N.D.
Killings, Cedric
Simmons, Jason
Turk, Matt
Weary, Fred
Wynn, Dexter

Restricted Free Agents
Brown, C.C.
Maddox, Anthony
Mathis, Jerome

I think all the RFA's will be back - yes Mathis included - they'll cost next to nothing. I'm also going to predict that most, not all, of the UFA will also be back - at least the should be back.

RESIGN:
Kalu, Demps, Clark, Davis, Salaam, Turk, (plus at least one of the following players: Simmons, Earl, Hutchins)

As long as we pick up a real running back in free agency (like M. Turner) the Texans dont need to resign Dayne. We would have Turner, Green, Taylor, Walker there is no room for Dayne. Dayne is not that good as a no 2 back, he is only productive when getting enough carries to wear down the defense. Unless we are planning on making Dayne our feature back next year he doesnt need to be resigned.

I'm probably the biggest Dayne detractor around here and even I say he deserves to come back next year; hopefully in a limited role as was originally intended.

weary is a tough one, same with earl

id bring nd, salaam, clark, ad, breuner.. actually id bring them all back as squad players except barry and maybe alexander, killings, simmons (and get rid of black)

I am in the same boat.

He hardly (if any) turns the rock over

Restricted Free Agents
Brown, C.C.

Mathis, Jerome

I would like to see what we can get for all three of these guys. Although I thought that Maddox was a SFA so nada would be the answer for him.

Mathis was a 3rd pick so what would we get for him?

Ideally Dayne comes back as our 3rd string RB. I seriously hope the Texans drop Green and pursue Michael Turner next year and let Taylor, Echemandu, and Walker battle it out for 2nd string. As far as the other FAs, we need to sign Demps, Davis, and Weary before the others.

Mathis was a 4th rounder, depending on which tender offer they give him is what we can get. The same goes for all the restricted players.

Got this from Wikipedia and the dollar amounts will be a little higher this season as the minimums pay has risen, the basic concept is the same.

A player who has 3 or less years of experience is eligible for restricted free agency, whereby his current team has the chance to retain rights to this player by matching the highest offer any other NFL franchise might make to that player. The club can either block a signing or, in essence, force a trade by offering a salary over a certain threshold. In 2006, these thresholds were as follows:

If a club tenders an offer of $685,000 per year for a three year veteran, and $725,000 for a four year veteran, the player's current team has "right of first refusal" over the contract at those terms, and may sign the player at those terms.
If a club tenders an offer of $712,000 or 110% (whichever is greater) of the previous year's salary, then the current club has both "right of first refusal" and rights to a draft pick from the same round (or better) from the signing club. Essentially, this means that the new club must forfeit the draft pick to the old club if they wish to sign the player under these terms.
If a club tenders an offer of $1.552 million or 110% (whichever is greater) of the previous year's salary, then the current club has both "right of first refusal"; and rights to the first round draft pick from the signing club

I would offer Maddox the middle offer at least other wise we risk losing him just like we almost lost Leach last year.

Andre Davis, stretches the field and has a knack for the End Zone. So he can't block for the run as well as KW, but I thought the WR was supposed to catch and score TD's. Silly me.

That's the first guy I resign. I don't give him crazy money. But I'd give him a contract that is favorble over most role players in the NFL. We give him his bonus for carring the team While A.J. was down. Pay him his money and lock him up long term. He is what he is. He will never be able to carry the #2 long term. But he is a great player who compliments what we already have on the roster. Pay the guy and let him know we love him. Just don't go crazy. You have an NFL home here if you want it Andre Davis.

They have six picks plus a little cap room to get a couple of guys. I'd be really careful about chopping the depth off the roster especilly at DT. And especailly when you've already lost one guy. Do all the hacking your purposing up there there will be a price in the middle of '08. There is nothing that says in '08 the injury bug will not hit the DTs and not the C/Gs on the roster. No one forsaw all the injuries at DB. I even fussed about it back in August. They had DBs stacked like a cord of wood. Turns out they need all of them. If you chop it, you gotta replace it there big guy. I always prefer the devil I know over the devil I don't know. Maddox isn't sexy. But he is cheap and he gets his job done in the rotation. Where you going to find that in the DT pool next year ? Inquiring minds wish to know.

He is not on the list...me I redo Travis Johnson this year. I get the contract more in line to what he brings to the table. He seems happy here, just get the money right. Pay him a bonus and lock him up long term.

If by Squad players you mean practice squad - they all have too much time to be eligible for the PS.

I thought he was a third rounder, shows what I know.

No wonder we have sucked for the last, oh I dont know, better half of a decade. Look at the 04/05 draft. Wow, just wow.

The Texans should pin this up in there war room each year to see what not to do.

I'm surprised a lot of you want Salaam back. I think Spencer will come back healthy and we should either draft or find in free agency a good LT to back up Spencer.

I hate the guy's play.....always getting beat.

I agree with this assessment. Nail down the DE depth now. Keep Demps, A. Davis, Weary, Hutchins and Turk.

Draft time needs to be C, FS, T, G, RB and LB.

i am on exactly the same page as you except I think we can forego going after Guard depth in the draft if we can keep Weary. He is going to get some interest around the league...even after his injury.

it's gonna be tough getting a quality OT in the draft though and still be able to address our other needs. Maybe we can find a project in the 5th round and hopefully make a better selection than we did with Brandon Frye.

Greg White tore us up yesterday and everyone saw it. Well seems he is a FA at the end of the season and TB may not have the cap room to make him a good offer.

Now he maybe loyal to them, they did give him his break, then again he might want to get that one big payday, they have always alluded him. So he is someone to put on the radar, see how the Bucs deal with him this offseason, he is behind a 1st round pick Gaines Adams. And he is only a RDE and so is Adams.

Just keep watching.

my resigns are ...

jason simmons - special teamer, versatile in secondary and even more than robinson is our biggest hitter.

von hutchins - see simmons (without being a hitter)

fred weary - a solid right guard and a player who can start for this team

charlie anderson - vet minimum, decent backup LB, and strong special teamer.

andre davis - burners are easy to sign, but davis has earned his contract and has proven himself here as an offensive and special teams threat.

ron dayne - IMO our perfect backup ... there are "dayne" games where he'll stand out, and he's perfect in kubiak's scheme as a space eater ... provided we can find a legit starter.

will demps - MAYBE. i'm not sold in the least on demps although my peers are. if he comes at a minor salary as depth (we need a legit FS), i'm comfortable with him as a backup (though simmons & hutchins are more versatile).

glenn earl - trade bait or cut if he cant beat brown through preseason.

matt turk - resign.

cc brown - resign.

mathis & maddox - hope someone else wants them ... with the special teams craze i'd get the entire PR team to try and sell mathis.

salaam is not good enough to be a backup. period. end of conversation. let salaam go or encourage retirement.

I dont know if you cut Dayne. He is a good back to hgave on your team. And to be honest, a little more proven than M. Turner. Just not a big fan of throwing huge money at another teams back up. Draft a guy late and use him as part of a 1-2 punch.
