RDE day 2/free agency prospects?

Hey guys, I have a feeling we're gonna be getting rid of Weaver this offseason which would allow Mario to play at his natural LDE position full time next season. My question for the board is, who are some good pass rush specialist day 2 prospects coming out and who would be a good option as a starting RDE in free agency?

Free Agent RDE?

DE/OLB Terrell Suggs will be a free agent and although he is having a down year, should return to premier pass rush form. A line from left to right of Williams, Okoye, Johnson, and Suggs would be devasting, especially if a few of the other holes on the defense are addressed. For instance, the addition of another legitimate CB(I don't expect Dunta's recovery to be complete by the start of next season), a ball-hawking FS(whether that is thru the draft, free agency, or a current player stepping up), and an upgrade at one of the 2 OLB positions.

If the Texans are able to fill a few of these holes on their defense before next season their defense could be well on their way to being dominant.

If we had Suggs I think that we could make do with a mid-tier FA at CB and trust that Bennett continues to develop. With Suggs on the line I think him and Mario would be guaranteed to have 10-12 sacks in a season and Okoye could probably roll up around 7. We do need a good OLB to complement DeMeco though as well as a ballhawking FS.

I dont think our defense is far off at all, especially if we added a guy like Suggs to the unit. I think we just need to get a good edge rusher, good OLB that can cut off the screen passes and cover a TE well, and a ballhawking FS in order to have a defense that could win games for us in spite of our offense (Oakland 06 game notwithstanding).
 
I say we fire Smith, Hire Glanville, throw money at Suggs, Briggs, and Samuels, and then for Gods sake draft a Left Tackle in the first round.
 
Now lets remember that we need to be wise with our money. If we spend too much and do it in a non wise way, we will be in salary cap hell in a few years. Lets remember, we also have the draft and in the draft we have:
1st rounder
3rd rounder
4th rounder
5th rounder
6th rounder
7th rounder

That is 6 picks to compliment our estimated $30,000,000 or so of cap room.

So what should we do? I say lets go after and try to fill holes in FA so that we can go BPA in the draft.

I do not think there are any LTs we should sign in FA and hope he will be our starter. We need to draft our LT. I also think our WR corp is fine and would not spend any serious money there either. I say we should also not spend money on ST. I also would not sign a QB. Also, I know many people are high on him, but I would not sign Michael Turner. It would probably be cheaper and smarter to draft a RB in the third round. So that leaves
DL, LB, and DB.

One approach can be to go after one or two "Big Name" players and basically spend all our money there.
1. For example we could go after Marcus Trufant to play CB and Terrell Suggs to play DE/OLB. We would have to structure our contracts well so that we dont end up in a salary cap hell.

2. If we want to get more solid players and plug holes, we would have to steer clear of the big names and get solid olayers. For example, we could get OLB Kawika Mitchell to play WILL, Justin Smith to play RDE, and then sign Boss Bailey to an incentive based contract at SAM.

Based on these moves here is what we could do in the draft:
1st rounder:BPA for RB, LT, FS
3rd rounder: BPA for RB, LT,FS, C
4th rounder: BPA for RB, LT, C, OLB,
5th rounder: BPA
6th rounder BPA
7th rounder BPA

Ideally I would like to get a LT and RB in the first and third round and a FS by the fourth. I would love a trade down to get a second rounder. In that scenario, I would go:
1. LT
2. RB
3. BPA of FS/C
4.BPA of FS/C/OLB
5. BPA
6. BPA
7. BPA

don't look now but Antwan Peek has 3 1/2 sacks, one being Schaub

the Texans are sure learning a hard lesson so I would say turnabout is fair play & scoop up at least one unsung DE off a good defense where he may be stuck behind a pro-bowl type of end & whos rookie contract is about to expire (similar to the Weaver signing, but don't over spend). one example that comes to mind is Chicago Bears back-up RDE Alex Brown.

Idealy the Texans should draft a player for the future @ every position of need. right now we have a ton of DT's & LDE's but nobody that stands out @ RDE. along with a cover corner, left tackle, running back, center, fs & wlb that pretty much covers the draft choices.

you can add a quality RDE in the 5th rd. successful careers include Robert Mathis, Colts, Aaron Kampman, Packers & Mark Anderson of da bears. looking @ this years group its difficult to see anyone of that quality late in the draft. The biggest sleeper prospect who could make this roster & still have some impact is Brian Johnston from Gardner-Webb, he is 6-5 270 with 4.7 speed. he is also productive with 74 tackles, 24 for loss 6 sacks & 22 QB prressures. those are the kind of numbers that indicate he has a high motor, is aggressive & competitive. I feel that would be a nice pick in the 5th rd. but someone may steal him in the 4th then you start thinking about how can I add more picks so I can draft this kid, but as 2nd day picks go he would be real high on my radar after the 3rd rd. hope that helps :)

we tried that remember? its how we ended up paying the likes of weaver, greenwood and co too much for just being 'guys'.. take a risk, pay for the talent and go with option 1 i say
 
Being away in college has taken some time away from my draft research this year. However, I've still been able to do some research and this is a pretty weak class for a later round RDE. There aren't any Dummerville's or Andersons that really jump out at this point. There isn't a Mathis type of guy this year. There isn't an undersized, speed rusher that is raking up the sacks under the radar this year.
 
Justin Smith, Jarred Allen, and Bobby McCray are the only DE FA prospects worth looking at.

You give me a little time to scour the college ranks and look at some film on some guys, and I'll one up you yet again beerlover. :)

Mebane hasn't dissabpointed thus far for where he was picked.
 
haha. ok. so here is a quick list I came up with. it's not very big, but it has some good looking guys potentially.

Tommy Blake, DE, TCU - 1st round talent, off the field problems.

Bruce Davis, DE, UCLA - My pick as of right now for this group. Production doesn't lie. He has produced in a tough conference for 2 years now.

Kirston Pittman, DE, LSU - Had an amazing freshman year, was hurt for 2 years, and has produced again this year. Ability is off the charts.

Jameel McClain, DE, Syracuse - I'm undecided on him, but I'm leaning more towards liking him than not.

Cliff Avril, OLB/DE, Purdue - Purdue DE's have a knack for getting to the QB.

Brian Johnston, DE, Gardner-Webb - I'll throw him in there just for you Beerlover.
 
I love tommy blake and I think he will be there for use to get in the draft if where wanted him. I just dont understand his issues it has been all season long depression

I would give Jared Allen Casserly money, that is how much I like him. :d:

Allen teamed up with Mario would be stupidly fun to watch. Then add another year wiser Okoye and you have the making for a fan friendly DL.

Well, I'll truly be shocked if Smith and Allen are not tagged. So are you posting you want to give up two high picks to get one of them ? Because that is what you are basically posting. The board was loaded with them last draft. Haven't researched how they are all doing. Look the board is loaded with RBs, o-lineman and DBs...that is where thier focus should be in the '08 draft. We need all of those things. Alll I want for christmass and the last two rounds is a couple of fast guys who can block gunners.

I just said I would throw money. Did not say I wanted to also throw two 1st to the Chief's, now would I throw them a 3rd for a midrange tender, hell yes in a heart beat. I agree with you that KC will most likely sign him long term or Franchise him, but until they do, I am dreaming.

In the draft I am hoping for a trade down, acquiring a 2nd for the trade down, with the lower 1st I want either a OLT prospect (Clady) or a RB (Mendenhall) which ever is rated higher at that point. With my 2nd I am going to target whatever I did not get in the 1st, targeting OT prospect Boone who I think stays in school, Williams from Vandi, or Otah might grade out to be a 3rd rounder, or RB someone like Chris Johnson from East Carolina.

FA I think the Texans have a shot at, resigning Demps Hutchins and Davis is my most important pre March job. Then I am looking at Travis LaBoy/Terrill Suggs trying to get one of them (Suggs is also a candidate to be Franchised), if I can not get one of them then I might go for Bobby McCray from Jacksonville at a cheaper price. I then look at LB and the two guys from the Cards interest me, they both played for Frank Bush when he coached there and it might help us out. I try to sign one of them. Pace is my main target here (we need a SAM), but would love to add Dansby, if they fall through I look at Boss Bailey with an incentive loaded contract.

A RFA that might be interesting is Jovan Haye DT from TB, he might be had for a 6th rounder. He has some sacks from the interior of the DL. On offense Chris Myers OC with Denver might be available for a 6th rounder. He is young, played at Miami with Winston and Butler, might know a thing about the scheme Kubiak has leaned to in his past.

And for the late rounds I am targeting a TE from Tennesese Brad Cottam 6-8 270, he has been hurt and should slip. Has the size to block and the ability to get into the seam, with that height should be a target in short yardage. Could be a longshot OT prospect.

i would be shocked if allen made it to FA (isnt happening imo) but smith is no world beater and if he starts looking for too much money in cinci it could happen (dont want him anyway though)
 
Why is it thought Suggs will return to form next season? I've not followed him recently. After a few cuts, we will have more than $30 million. I think $15 m will be available for FA
 
I suggested that he may return to form, mainly because having 1 bad year doesn't necessarily indicate that his productivity will remain down and he is only 25 years old and in his 5th season. I would think that most players in those circumstances would still have several of their best years left.

By the way, since the season isn't over, he could still go on a 3 game tear and bring his sack numbers back up.
 
Suggs averaged 55 tackles & 10 sacks per year in his first 4 years.

I think that his lack of production has more to do with the fact that teams are only averaging 30 pass attempts per game against Baltimore (5th least in the league) because the Ravens are always behind.

He has still managed 70 tackles (a career high) & 4 sacks.

Thanks. Good info. Has he gained some extra LBs this season? Anyone think Weaver will be gone next season?
