Kevin Smith-UCF

Such is life at Central Florida for Kevin Smith, who has quietly put together one of the best seasons for a running back in college football history.

He has run for 2,164 yards this season, fourth-best in NCAA history, and still has two games to play. The junior has 26 touchdowns, a 300-yard game and five more with at least 200 yards. At the rate he's going, only Barry Sanders' 2,628 yards in 1989 will stand ahead of Smith's total this season.

Smith gets to add to those totals Saturday in the Conference USA championship against Tulsa.

Playing in C-USA, at one of those 'other' Florida schools, the hype that usually goes to players with Smith's abilities and statistics has eluded him. He's got no shot at the Heisman Trophy and didn't even make the final cut for the Doak Walker Award, despite putting up better numbers than the finalists: Michigan's Mike Hart, Arkansas' Darren McFadden and Rutgers' Ray Rice. Earlier this week, only two reporters were waiting to interview Smith after practice.
Smith has done little to draw attention to himself. Spare with self-promotion, he gets good grades, keeps his head down and gushes about the offensive line. The junior believably insists he's not sure he'll skip his senior season for the NFL draft, and won't without O'Leary's blessing.

"It's the week of the (Conference USA) championship," Smith said. "Worrying about whether I'm going to be here next year is the last thing that should be on my mind."

He now has 2,448 yards and 29 touchdowns because of his 284 yard 4 TD game against Tulsa.
And UCF is now quietly 10-3 & conference champs.

Their only losses are to Texas (who was ranked 6) by 3.

At USF (who was ranked 5) by *cough* 52.

at ECU (6-2 conf. record) by 14.

and he looked amazing against USF for the one drive they actually let him run the ball. completely tearing up the defense with ease. then they went away from him and stuck with their awful QB-rotation, which produced comical turnovers. then it became too ridiculous to keep running him.

But here in Orlando, with numbers just as staggering as those of his state neighbor, UCF running back Kevin Smith has had a quiet week.

Smith ended the regular season with 2,448 rushing yards, just 180 yards shy of Barry Sanders' all-time single-season record. Yet Smith, who won't join Tebow in New York as a Heisman finalist, was without much Heisman hype and isn't even a finalist for any of the heavy hardware at tonight's College Football Awards Show.

More of a glider. Like former Viking RB Robert Smith.
I'll buy that. I'll be p$$ed if they take him over the CB or dancing bear o-lineman. They could make a worse pick. I don't know the guy just see the interviews, and stuff...I like him. He reminds me in his attitude a lot like Levi Brown. Good down to earth kid who is not defined only by his tallent. We could do lot worse. It's amazing at his size how strong he is.

i go to UCF and i see him around campus all the time... he's not as fast as you guys think, i think he'll clock around a 4.6 at the combine. however, he is a very smart runner, has great patience, and runs tough.

still, i'm not entirely sold on him at the next level.

there you go guys a very "nice" College back :specnatz:

in the NFL he could be a very "nice" system RB & there's nothing to be ashamed or dishonored about that as a matter of fact for a team that needs a good young system back like the Seahawks (similar to what the Colts did with Addai) select him late 1st rd.

Gholston will ultimately wind up top 5 i feel.
you might be right, for now I'm sticking w/Top 10 then revisit after the BCS game. maybe Yankee_In_Texas has some views on the subject................

can't say I was surprised by the outrage on these boards when I mocked him as the #11 selection of the Houston Texans, they just didn't know he was (in that scenero) the bpa

Unless he gets busted for roids, which is starting to look like a real possibility. Apparently him and Merriman are tight.
Com'on Apple, you can't throw stuff like that up there with out some ammo to back it up. Where's the link ? You personally seen him take steroids ? Where are you getting this ? You know I knew personally the guy who set up the Texas cheerleader mom that tried to wack the rival. Doesn't mean I smoked joints with Terry Harper.

Am I the only guy worried about Smith's over 400 carries this season coming back to shorten his NFL career?
I don't see it keeping Smith from being effective over the length of his rookie contract (5 years?). And that's all you can count on from any RB.

If Smith had a history of knee and/or shoulder injuries, then I would be concerned. But, it's not like he's the type of runner who initiates a lot of contact. I think Smith broke Marcus Allen's record for most attempts in a season. Allen went on to have a very long career in the NFL. I wouldn't be concerned.

I agree with Lucky it should not be any cause for alarm given his running style, seems very durable & avoids taking tacklers head one unlike Jonathan Stewart who I've noticed goes looking for contact, likes to punish/finish his plays & thats a set-up for injury @ the next level, IMO.

Smith is a guy I'm very interested in, but I'm having a hard time giving him a legit/honest projection at this point. I want to say about 4th round, but I really don't know. He is the guy I am the least sure about at this point.

And some of the national media is starting to talk like he should be the #2 RB taken. I just do not see it.

BTW about initating contact verse avoiding contact, Walter Payton never avoided a hit and he last a long time, Emmitt Smith was not excactly a hit avoider. Eric Dickerson and Bo Jackson did not like to take a hit.

Earl Campbell caused collision that moved studiums, in fact I remember him running over Bevo and the steer was rocked. Earl vs Bevo you have to download the highlight, it is pretty far down but it's there.

So my conclusion is that some backs last longer than other and you can not measure the pounding nor the heart of the player to take the pounding. Only the full playing of a mans career will do that.

BUENO!
I don't think Kevin Smith is going to make it in the NFL.

He's too old and I don't think the NFL is going to appreciate his stoner humor.

Well I've atcually watched him twice. The only concern I have bout him as with all I backs is can he pick up a complicted blitz. Can he catch the ball ? That's it.
Feeding the ball to the guy the way O'leary did, I do not think carring the load should be a concern. At one point I though he might be there in the third because of those questions. Now I'm not so sure he dosen't crack day one. Two things you know for a fact about the guy is he is durable and if he gets a crack in the line, he can expoilt it. He is productive. And has been for two years.

Heart or not his history says he should make the transition. Not his fault you never heard of him befor this year. Or that he doesn't play for a rain maker D1 school, is it ? Under those scenarioes I guess we should of Passed on Owen Daniels and J. Jones.

It's not like LJ came out of a powerhouse D1 either at Pitt.
