12-04 Mock

beerlover

Hall of Fame
1 Miami 0-12 - Glenn Dorsey, DT LSU

top prospect for a 3-4 defense, a no brainer unless Capers is shown the door

2 New England (from San Francisco) 3-9 - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

rich get richer, causes mulitiple mis-matches then rest of the draft can focus on defense which is looking old to me

3 New York Jets 3-9 - Howe Long Jr. DE, Virginia

lots of holes to fill (four picks in 07 draft) prime trading partner if McFadden is still available but see them addressing pass rush as #1 need with top prospect

4 Atlanta Falcons 3-9 - Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College

had Petrino selecting his former QB Brohm but then it occured he passed on Okoye so throw loyalty out the window & go with Brady clone.

5 St. Louis Rams 3-9 - Jake Long, OT, Michigan

Pace has been hurt, the offensive line has struggled both in pass protection & the running game which Long should help immediately

6 Cincinnati 4-8 - James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State

playcalling leader in the middle of the defense along the lines of Willis & DeMeco

7 Oakland Raiders 4-8 - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State

long term protection for franchise QB JaMarcus Russell

8 Kansas City Cheifs 4-8 - Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

if Malcolm comes out he will be the top cb in the draft, watch for him to show his stuff against LSU rising up the boards.

9 Baltimore 4-8 - Sam Baker, OT, USC

tempted to go QB but they need to also address protection & Ogdon is not getting any younger.

10 New Orleans 5-7 - Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas

secondary is a need, Aqib looks like a very solid NFL corner who should start day one.

11 Houston Texans 5-7 - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State

why surprised? everyone knows the Texans like to draft defensive linemen in the 1st rd. the top 3 rated LT's & top 2 CB's are gone. with Mario finding home @ LDE the Texans need a high motor, speed rushing, workout warrior coming off the right side. Gholston is a solid 260 with 4.5 speed sack machine.

12 Denver Broncos 5-7 - Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC

need help everywhere defensively, would love Gholston but with Ellis still available this would insure improved interior run defense

13 Carolina Panthers 5-7 - Calais Campbell, DE, Miami

bookends of Peppers & Campbell should really help the pass rush, sick really

14 Chicago Bears 5-7 - Andre' Woodson, QB, Kentucky

they draft a QB. Woodson may be good enough to return them to the Superbowl sooner than later

15 Philadelphia Eagles 5-7 - DeSean Jackson, WR, California

Westbrook needs another playmaker to spread the offenese

16 Washington Redskins 5-7 - Kenny Phillips FS Miami

hard not to feel a huge hole now exists & another Hurricane just could be part of the healing process

17 Arizona Cardinals 6-6 - Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon

DE is their biggest need but the bpa is JS who would compliment their biggest strength the OL. maximizing time of possesion & keeping the D rested

18 Buffalo Bills 6-6 - Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma

addressed the backfield last draft, still need weapons this time @ WR

19 Minnesota Vikings 6-6 - Gosder Cherilus, OT Boston College

protection @ RT for the RB

20 Detroit Lions 6-6 - Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida

by draft time Jenkins will be the next corner off the board & the Lions need the best one available

21 Dallas (from Cleveland) 7-5 Reggie Smith, CB, Oklahoma

basicly get the same pick back as they traded in 07 (22) Reggie is a mature defensive upgrade that can cover or play safety

22 Tennsesse Tacks 7-5 - James Hardy, WR, Indiana

Vince gets a big target (also like Missouri TE Martin Rucker) that can look him in the eyes (6-6)

23 San Diego Chargers 7-5 - Early Doucet, WR, LSU

looks good in LSU uniform should look good as a Charger. while he has struggled somewhat with nagging injurys he remains a big time WR

24 Seattle Seahawks 8-4 - Kevin Smith, RB Central Florida

have the feeling Felix Jones will return to Arkansas despite the coaching change to be the #1 RB in the 09 draft. Kevin Smith is a "nice college back" that should fit in Seattle causing sleepless nights for oppossing defenses

25 Tampa Bay Bucs 8-4 - Brian Brohm, QB Louisville

Gruden never has enough QB's. in this case the value is too great to pass on or they could trade down like Dallas did last year with Cleveland

26 New York Giants 8-4 - Jeff Otah, OT Pittsburgh

if they don't address protection for Manning he may go the way of Carr. Otah is a physical specimen who keeps improving & stepping up to each challenge

27 Jacksonville Jags 8-4 - Dan Connor, OLB Penn State

would be a great fit if still available in the same mold as the coach

28 Pittsburgh Steelers 9-3 - Adarius Bowman, WR Oklahoma State

would take Otah if still available but adding WR is also a need. Bowman has good NFL size for the position

29 Green Bay Packers 10-2 - Antoine Cason, CB Arizona

excellent cover corner is a need. Cason has proven he is 1st rd. talent

30 San Francisco (from Indianapolis 10-2) Rashard Mendenhall, RB Illinois

need depth & compliment to Frank Gore. Mendenhall looks like 1st rd, talent similar to Joseph Addai who was taken #30 in the 06 draft

31 Dallas 11-1 - Steve Slaton, RB, West Virginia

high risk reward but Cowboys can take the chance. seems like a given they let Julius Jones walk (would try to resign him & address cb)

32 New England (pick forfeited) 12-0

You really think they would take another DL with all the holes we have everywhere else? I could see them doing it if we got a stud RB and stud Center, along with a stud CB in FA. What are the odds of that happening?

I'm not saying they wouldn't take the DE if he was BPA, I just don't see it right now with all the other holes we have. Maybe they would try to trade down if it played out the way you have it. Just don't know right now. Alot can happen between now and Draft time. Hopefully, it will be alot of good. Lord knows we some of that!

Like I said in another thread, every mock has us picking different positions. The RB from Arkansas (if he declares), a LB from Penn State, an OT from USC, a safety from Miami, etc., etc.....

No link so I have noidea where you got this, but the guy is either a moron or he is just trying to yank peoples chains and get a reaction.

I puke when I see Glenn Dorsey at #1

*looks at the mock again*

Oh God.... not again!!!

*puke*

Seriously though... that guy is garbage. I would take Amobi over him every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

no link, its the original & it took this moron about two hours to research given the updated draft order :ok:

this is not a popularity contest its a MOCK DRAFT, its based on research & watching alot of football & yeah, personel opinion. some prospects have moved up some have droped out (1st rd.) as is normally the case. hey if you think this is bad wait until the senior bowl, combine & personel workout rumors start flying  this is a fluid process based on actual play during this season, bowl games yet to even get started & the current needs around the NFL as they stand, its pretty damn unrealistic to think anyone has all the answears, expecially this early its anyones guess (although its my 4th season doing this).

I can easily defend the Texans pick & simply say Texans Select The BPA. Vernon Gholston is a beast, a football player a tough pass rushing DE ready to play on Sundays. in this scenero the Texans could easily trade down because teams would be willing to move up & get Gholston with the top tackles & cb's gone (under this scenero) it gives Rick Smith the freedom to move down to get the next best player @ one of those positions of need while adding value picks. this gives you some idea just how far you could trade down to aquire the next talented LT/CB. fs Kenny Phillips #16, cb Mike Jenkins #20, OT's Gosder Cherilus #19 or Jeff Otah #26.

its intended to share so we all have an updated draft guide to use grading prospects going forward in trade down sceneros or just selecting your favorite player, nothing more or less, those who have been around should know that nothing is surprising come draft day & its wise to be prepared

It hurts seeing a few players I've got an eye on going only a few picks later. Stewart, Phillips, and Reggie Smith would all make solid picks, I'm not down for another DE (although I will admit we do need a pass rusher from the spot on passing downs, just don't feel it's worth a 1st yet again). I won't say it won't happen (because it's impossible to say at this point), but I highly doubt we go DE with bigger problems on our team.

I for one salute you beerlover, if this in fact your own Mock Draft that you researched and put up here for everybody to see. Good job.

for everybody else who hates beerlover and his mock draftiness, here's a mock you can probably learn to love.

EDIT: This draft page has been updated, and no longer reflects the previous opinions I expressed in this post.

I agree with this but don't you think it makes a good case to trade down? on the one hand you have the bpa who should be a Top 10 pick that many teams covet, while there still players of need on the board later & the Texans can address more picks/needs in the process.

Anyway, it wasn't planned to screw the Texans or anything like that but it is a realistic scenero that could happen yet to some totaly unexpected (based on teams currently picking ahead of the Texans, their needs, & the available talent pool) :)

lmao @ garbage.

That's two of us. I'd trade Okoye and a second in '09 to get my hands on the guy. Did you see Haynesworth just tossing around Flanagan like a ragedy ann doll last week end ? That's what you are buying with Glenn Dorsey.

I absolutly hate the pick Beerlover. But it is a very good mock. I think your logic is sound and the scenario could play out that way. Still say J.J. is going to make an offer the fins can't refuse.

Yeah but now you don't have just a few holes in the o-line. That was the sword in the preverbial bull last week end. The bull is dead bear lover. The ears and tail have been cut off and they are litterallly starting from scratch. Agreed: you trade down as many times as you have to untill the BPA meets the biggest need with the biggest tallent. Cover corner, Rb, o-lineman. Rick smith may be forced to do it this way.

I usually never have a problem with trading down some spots. Kubiak and Smith have shown that they can make good with what picks they have. Everyone except for Lundy is still on the team that they've drafted, and they've also landed 6 solid starters. If we could move down about 5 - 10 spots, pick up some useful picks, and still land a solid talent, I have no complaints.

No I don't think I could love that Mock. I'm not sure how good the DE from Florida is or where he ranks, but to take Tashard Choice in the 3rd with LT Jeff Otah taken 2 spots later, would be just sickening to me. I'm not enamored with many of the RB's in this years Draft, and if we pass on a RB in the 1st, then I don't think there is any that will really help us that much in the later rounds. I just don't think they would be worth it. And if Otah is there in the 3rd, I hope we don't pass him up! JMHO!

Kubiack isn't going to take a 205 pound RB that high.

Beerlover, just to pick on you, you mentioned that these rankings were indicitive of their play on the field this year. If that is the case, Dorsey should not go #1. His injuries have hampered him, and honestly, I'm not crazy high on him.

I like Gholston. I'm not conviced yet that he deserves that high a spot, but we will see. His workout numbers will certinaly shoot him up the board. I could actually see Gholston fitting in well as a 3-4 OLB with his ability to blitz.

If we were to go DE in this particular scenario, I would probably go with Campbell who you have sliding down to the pick after us. Campbell is best utilized as a pass rusher. He almost has Mario measurables, but he won't test out quite as well. He is much quicker off the line and is very good at getting to the QB. I think Campbell and Mario would be a scarier combo than Gholston and Mario.

Have you not seen him play when he doesn't have a knee injury?

Absolute opposite of garbage.

thanks for your input/feedback :)

I'm basing Dorsey ranking on his pre-injury ability to dominate the defense. he will be rated much higher for instance than the next best NT/DT coming out of College Vince Wilfork in years. he's a perfect fit for the 3-4 (Miami/New England) or 4-3 (Jets, Falcons, Rams).

Campbell is very similar to Mario Williams both in size, measureables & raw ability. the Texans will not duplicate the same skill set, they need a pass rushing specialist with blazing speed, pass rushing moves, ability to run down a QB w/high motor or shawdow the RB slipping out of the backfield. Gholston is more like a young Dwight Freeney (who was selected 11th overall) with slightly bigger frame but very similar strength, speed & package of pass rushing skills.

Vernon Gholston is a pretty sweet worst case scenero. I really beleive he will be a top 10 pick by the time all is said & done but I thought the same thing of Amobi Okoye. While Amobi was based alot on potential/age Gholston is based on actual production (4th in nation with 13 sacks) he would be a very safe pick, similar to last years 10th pick Patrick Willis, & give the Texans every tool they need to have a fearsome foursome.

They updated it. When I posted it, we were taking McFadden at #15.

id be fine with gholston/ campbell....... once we got mike turner and samuel in FA! seriously though id like it anyway but i think whats happened with schaub this yr means our draft will be pretty o-line heavy esp in the first

Tashard Choice is a pretty good player.

Hey com'on you've watced the guy for a season and a half now..What dose he do ? One guy gets the majority of the touches. All the guys on the roster have three things in comon. They are all over 210. They all can Block. They all can catch the ball. I've watched G. Tech three times. I see no Ladainian on that team. And it would take a Ladainian for Kube & Smith to break their mold.

The guy who has the best chance...the loose canon in South Carolina. They can get him latter in day two. He runs out of the same offense, He can catch the ball. He has enough loose hips to make the first guy miss. And...he is over 210. That is the pattern. Don't tell me what they almost did. I'm going by what he has done in the past. I see nothing that says they will break that pattern.

Cory Boyd 6-0, 220 4.55 South Carolina

They updated it. When I posted it, we were taking McFadden at #15.

Ah. there is no way that guy, that beast, will pass by fourteen teams. No way.

I could see the Jets making a move on the guy. The o-line board is set up to take a few peices latter. Couple of guys hurt... long shots. Dove tails into their max effort to rebuild.

Another thing I keep seeing on the mockers drafts...not picking on you beerlover...
Seattle is another prime canidate to move down. They gotta find a left guard. They have to start thinking about replacing Walter Jones. On the one hand you can say that alexander got real sucky this year. On the other hand you can say that Sean Alexander got really sucky once they Vikes stold Steve Hucthinson. Be cheaper to fix the LG than to dish out another ten million on another #1 RB and take the cap hit on Alexander. Not saying that Kevin smith doesn't fit. They could do it that way. Holmgren has a tallent for coaching raw RBs with tallent up.

heard of Alan Faneca? he is a FA & Seattle will overspend (Texans have too many needs) to sign him away from Pittsburgh. also I don't see any OG going in the 1st rd. this year draft, unless you want to groom one of the tackles @ OG.

So ten million on a draft pick or 70 million on Faneca ? Hmmm, I think I know what I'd do. Look there is a lot of tallent in the second round through the second day. They may take Faneca. But it won't be cheap. Lot of guys, atheltic guys at OT this year. Couple of prime Gaurds who have the X next to their names. Just don't believe, even though he's over thirty, that SA is done.

We just have so many needs that need addressing. Are: dunta, fred, chris white, mckinney and eveyone else on IR going to be close to their form? List goes on and on. I am not for choosing another dl, and feel that we need to get a C or OT in the first round.

If it happens likes this, what I would like to see, trade our 11th pick to Arizona at 17 to allow them the "sack making machine". We draft Alex Boone 6'7" 325 picked by Draft Insiders Digest as "Ohio State's best LT since Orlando Pace." We also pick up a 2nd round from Cardinals and select Ian Johnson 5'10" workhorse for Boise State. I may be reaching but I like these guys to fill our holes. In 3rd, I'd select CenterSteve Justice from Wake Forest or John Sullivan Notre Dame. In 4th Chevis Jackson CB LSU as Dunte may not make it back. Would be sweet if we got Samuel in FA.

The Texans have consistently used the Free Agency period to fill their needs and taken their version of the BPA in the first round. So I expect a new Running Back (there are plenty of free agents) and a D-back in free agency, thus answering the "biggest" needs. Unfortunately, the premiere LB and OT are taken. I have said before, and I will say again to agree with BeerLover, I would not be surprised with a DE taken again in the first round. I really would not. If there is one thing the Texans seem committed to, it's drafting that Defensive line.

no link, its the original & it took this moron about two hours to research given the updated draft order :ok:

Next time I will insert the sarcastic sign because that is what I was being.

That is also why included the or yanking our chains.

I'm glad you thought of this, but in this case it would be just in front of the Vikings who I had taking Gosder Cherilus, OT Boston College. Ohio State is really loaded with NFL talent but I think he stays in school to become a Top 10 pick, right now I already have 3 OT's going in the Top 10. it sure would be a shame if the Texans are unable to get one

I really hope that at least a few Jr's declare this year so the OL talent is just supremely loaded.

Clady, Loadholt, and Oher can make or break this draft for us really, because if all 3 of those guys declare, we are getting somebody.

Lets count em:

1. Jake Long
2. Ryan Clady
3. Phil Loadholt
4. Sam Baker
5. Cherilus Godser
6. Jeff Otah
7. Michael Oher

I think all of those guys could be 1st rounders with their given talent, and I would not have a problem with picking any of them (Except maybe Loadholt, but even that is iffy). And I don't see 7 offensive linemen getting taken before we pick.

Now whether or not we are going to pick an OL is a complete mystery because I have not seen enough of Kubiak and Smith's drafting tendencies to know what positions and what players we will be targeting with our 1st round pick.

I really think that the draft (if those Jr's declare) will be too loaded with OL talent not to pick one of them up BPA or not at our position in the draft. A tradedown is also an entertaining venue of thought as well, but we have to get at least a lower first and a second rounder to even think about it, and some team has to be willing to give that up, so we shall see.

you can never have enough depth on the d-line. if Houston goes d-line again, it's not the end of the world. they're not taking QB's every year or anything ridiculous like that.

A trade down could be a very good thing. That would allow us to draft OL, OLB, CB, and RB in that order. I put RB last because I thall we need is a guy to split carries w/ Dayne, Green, and Taylor. Ot is vital for obvious reasons. OLB and CB are vital because outside of Ryans, Mario, and Bennet, we have no one who can make a play. A side line to side line LB would be a very nice addition, and would get Greenwood and whoever we started last game off the field. Oh, and get Diles some PT to see what he can do.

give or take order/team as it stands right now +/- a few players on the bubble this is a current draft board matched to teams needs, called a Mock Draft. I could make some tweeking here or there but basicly most of these prospects will be there come draft day, the big mystery is where will the go? Based on most of your comments its pretty clear the Texans should be in trade down mode (unless a LT falls into their laps, like Ryan Clady).

my gut feeling tells me ideally the Texans trade down & select Jeff Otah the big LT from Pittsburgh. several reasons all good but one of the most compelling is his association with the same program that Charles Spencer came from. He is similar sized (6-6 340) maybe a little more angular, similar hand punch & style of play that should give Kubaik a comfort level he might just exercise on a LT in the 1st rd. just a gut feeling, its only December but thats a resonable assumption @ this point. oh yeah, thanks for all your feedback, hope it makes everyone feel part of the process :doot:

Campbell is very similar to Mario Williams both in size, measureables & raw ability. the Texans will not duplicate the same skill set, they need a pass rushing specialist with blazing speed, pass rushing moves, ability to run down a QB w/high motor or shawdow the RB slipping out of the backfield. Gholston is more like a young Dwight Freeney (who was selected 11th overall) with slightly bigger frame but very similar strength, speed & package of pass rushing skills.

Campbell and Mario play completely different. Campbell uses his quickness and arm length alot more than Mario. Mario uses his strength ALOT more than Campbell does. Both may be large, but they play much different than each other.

With Campbell, you are getting a guy with a little more pass rushing skills than Mario when he came out, yet he won't be as strong against the run as Mario was in his rookie year. Just MO.

P.S. Campbell reminds me more of Jason Taylor than Mario Williams.

I enjoyed it. I could live with the guy. He's a big guy who is still raw...Just like Erick was. Big athletic body that needs a little coaching up, I can live with that.

PICK #16 The Bears Pick:
16.
Michael Oher (OG, Mississippi)
Rumors are circulating that Michael Oher will leave Ole Miss early and bolt for the NFL. Oher is a versatile, athletic, offensive lineman who could play inside or outside at the next level. Not completely fundamentally sound yet, the physically gifted Oher has the talent to develop into one of the NFL’s best offensive lineman. He could go higher than this come draft day.

What's this guy talking about old Miss. You told me a while back no way Jose ?

Beats me! I would want him to declare for selfish personal reasons of a SUPER chance we would draft this guy. As someone who's watched him I'd see a bigger benefit of him staying and being a top 10 lock next draft.

I havn't heard any credible rumors myself about him declaring, it would be a big surprise to me. If it happens I'd be extatic and He would be my pick hands down. With all biasness aside, I think he would be a perfect pick for us. While he does need to develop more, he has really good feet and is large- he would be a good LT for our team. Also he is versatile enough and would be a really good Guard in the NFL as many are projecting. This would be a great situation for us b/c of all our injuries. He could play left tackle or guard depending on our biggest hole at the time. I personally would want him to be our Left Tackle. And then when Spencer comes back see how the two play out.

I'm the same way about Ulatoski of Sodom on Towne Lake. Well you say no, this guy is talking out his butt is all I know. He could cover the left side and RT. and play RG in a pinch. He's got nothing but upside. We miss, Like the tackles at Alabama and Georgia. Youngters but they look prety good.

What has Taylor actually done that you want to risk anything on him?

my opinion of Campbell/Phillips has been limited due to their team suckiness (if thats a word?) Campbell has excellent push collapsing the pocket & seems very active in the backfield (remember this is against College competition) & does get to the QB but seriously I did several double takes thinking this guy was a Mario Clone, big body towering over opponents, pushing people around without the pass rushing moves I'm more in favor of coming off the right side, just superior measureables, no burst or explosion off the line of scrimmage & closing quickness to run down NFL speed anymore than Mario. Remember Mario ran a 4.66 I seriously doubt Campbell is any faster, he might have a little longer reach but still Mario has elite reach (34"1/8). It took almost two seasons to find his position LDE in a 4-3 I doubt Texans fans have any desire to repeat the process or wait for him to develop, the only way we would be happy with a DE is a productive, workout warrior with a high motor that constantly gets to the QB & shuts down the passing game.

Jason Taylor is in the mold of a classic RDE 6'5" 255 lbs. Gholston is closer to him but more compact RDE 6'4" 258 & powerful with similar playmaking skills.

As a 3rd to 4th rb, yeah I could risk that. He showed a little last year, and if we draft a guy in a later round and use him in a rotation. I just dont think the RB hole is as massive as our oline, LB corp not named Demeco, or CB. Just am more comfortable with Dayne, Green, Rookie 5th or 6th round RB, and Taylor than Bennet and ____ at CB, Greenwood and Anderson at OLB, and what we have on the oline. You upgrade what is the worst, and our Oline, CB, and OLB are by far our most glaring needs.

See, I am not speaking in measurables. Measurables are deceiving. I just go by how the guy plays. I've seen Campbell use his speed and arms alot like Jason Taylor does. Mario uses a bullrush, and recently has been using that wide angled spin move, mostly. I see alot more versatility in Campbell's pass rushing moves, when it comes to using his hands and arm length.

When it comes to body type, Campbell and Mario are similiar in that they are both tall and big. Mario looks like he has more weight behind him, Campbell looks thinner. I think most of the comparisons come from their body types, and not necessarily their skills.

We can agree on 2 0f 3. I would address LT in first (preferably after a trade down) I would sign Samuel to go with Bennett, Hutchins and hopefully DR who might not play again. This would solidify CB and take pressure off safety and LBs. In 3rd, I see a RB unless a trade down gets us a 2nd and then RB here. In 4th a center and in 5th OLB. As some have suggested moving Ryan to OLB and Diles is almost a clone in size, why not try Diles at OLB? I can see a free agent RB to compete with Green & Dayne but Eche has to make roster as does Taylor. BTW, Taylor has 28 rushes for 123 yards. Not much to hang your hopes on. Like Charles Spencer, he did look good, until you blinked. I am not saying to not allow either to show up in 08, but I want other options than two guys who played two games each.

Well one thing for a fact you know 'bout Taylor...they didn't settle the guy out. somebody deffintly likes the guy. another thingy I know about Kubes he is tough on his young Rbs. Transition by fire as it were. Somebody likes Mr. Taylor.
