My thoughts on how to fix our defense...

This cant be done until the offseason obviously but here is what I think we need to do...

1) Fire Richard Smith!!! Our multiple high draft picks and high priced free agents that we have invested on defense will never realize their full potential until this guy is gone. He runs a vanilla bend but dont break defense and you dont draft multiple 1st rounders and other high picks as well as pick up high priced players in FA to run a vanilla bend but dont break scheme. This defense should be able to carry this team to wins and be a swarming attacking defense but it is unable to and I think the problem here lies on the coaching not on the personnel for the most part.

2) Get rid of Anthony Weaver. Its time to admit we made a mistake in giving him a huge contract and move on. He seems like a nice guy but being nice has never won anyone football games. The only place that he can produce at all at happens to be Mario's best position. Get rid of Weaver and sign a legit weakside DE in free agency. Someone like Alex Brown who wont break the bank but will be able to put up solid production as well.

3) Upgrade the OLB positions. We cant start next season with two average at best players on either side of DeMeco. We need to have a good player that can compliment DeMeco and help cure our screen pass and tight end woes.

4) Continue adding depth in the secondary. Bennett, Demps, and CC have performed better than I expected this season but I still think we need to add a legit gamechanger at safety. A ballhawk type...we dont know how good Dunta will be coming off the injury so we need to get someone that can start for us and not be embarassed like Faggins and the artist formerly known as P-Burnt.

That's all i've got for now. Feel free to add your own thoughts!!!

I think the biggest thing these guys need is time. Mario is going to be an amazing player and Okoye looks very promising as well. Ryans and Robinson still have their best years ahead of them.

A more consistenct offense would help these guys out too.

I hope your right but I dont think you are. Duntas injury is severe enough he will never be the same.

I agree with most of that. I've noticed that Mario plays extremely well at the LDE position. I feel that we should release Weaver and move Mario over to that end, which would send us in search of a legit RDE. Not an easy task, but Weaver isn't cutting it.

DRob will be just fine, he just won't play next year.

That is why I am all for getting A.S. if we had a shot at him.

Drafting a running back will do wonders for our defense.

Fire Richard Smith!!!

OK, I'm ready to climb aboard this bandwagon now. Today broke the camel's back. It's not bad enough that the scheme has been horrible all season long, and not bad enough that you get no pressure from your front 4 a majority of the time and you'd seemingly rather chew your own arm off than blitz, but knowing you don't get pressure with these guys and on at least two 3rd and longs today, instead of sending 4, who probably don't make much of a push anyway, you decide to just send TWO!! AND THEY GET THE FREAKING 1ST DOWN BOTH TIMES!!!!!!

Enough already.

Fire Richard Smith and bring back the Man in Black himself, Jerry Glanville to coach our defense.

Apparently he is still out there coaching. He was the DC for Hawaii and now coach's Portland State.

Love him or hate him but at least the defense would have some balls and be entertaining to watch.

I was just thinking that Sunday when I heard his name brought up for the BCS ranking show on FOX.

You just made John McClains day. LOL.

This defensive co-ordinator is doing exactly, preciesly what his boss is telling him to do. Cheaper to fire the one. They don't upgrade some tallent, going to be the same story next year. Richard Smith may be like DC. Just becuse you lose the face doesn't nesisarrily mean you loose the problem. the problem may still be here after he is gone. The all world MLB chased a few rabbits again sunday. Can't fire Demeeeco though.

Amen ! Smith is only game planning the way Kubiak wants it done.

I'm with you all the way and we will probably have a high enough pick to get a guy like Dan Connor or that corner out of Arizona. As for Smith... you can't blame it all on him but he does deserve at least most of the credit. Kubiak has the offense clicking, even with Rosenfels starting, so that frees up all that cap space we have for bringing in experiance on defense. Weaver is over paid and isn't producing so I'd be happy to see him go as well

Riiiiiiiight. And the reason no NFL team employs him today is....?

We would have the highest number of penalties against us to go along with the highest turnover percentage. So instead of just playing sloppy, we could upgrade to sloppiest.

I'm no fan of Richard Smith, but I'd keep him before going with Glanville.

Kubiak does not call defensive plays.

Come on though.. even the biggest fans of our offense still have to admit we need a new LT and C. Even if White can step it up next year at C, we still need a starting LT, and I highly doubt Spencer is back to full strength. Right now we have our OL depth chart at what:

LT : Salaam (falling apart), Black (sucks) Spencer (Multi- Season ending injury)
LG : Pitts (getting old)
C : McKinney (Season ending injury), Flanagan (old), White (season ending injury)
RG : Weary (Season ending injury), Studdard
RT : Winston, Frye (not sure...injured though right?)

If we get EVERYTHING go our way (when does that happen) Best Case 2008..

LT: Spencer
LG: Pitts
C: McKinney
RG: Studdard
RT: Winston

I'm not sure why you keep saying Pitts is getting old. He's only 28. For an OLineman that's fairly young.

Pardon the interuption. Please continue.:)

Fair enough. Still no depth behind him though. Apparently Kubiak didn't have faith in Studdard this week. He put White in at RG instead of the natural RG. Hopefully he just wanted to test if he could handle both positions or something.

So we need a solid LT, Solid C, and maybe another G for depth. I REALLY hope McNair decides to draft a LT in the first round finally.

FWIW, Studdard's natural position is left guard. I believe once Studdard adjusts to the speed of the game he'll be fine.

I agree on needing a LT and C, but we're good enough at G to keep us from having to draft/sign any over our many other glaring needs.

edit: I just wanted to add that I seriously doubt McNair has much to do with the draft, Free Agency or talent evaluation. He wants to win and I think he's hired the correct people to do their jobs correctly.

An interesting thing to think about is what we should address as our primary needs in FA/draft. Our defense is young and loaded with talent, yet has more holes than the offense, IMO. We need a safety (or two) and a DB (heck, two of those would be nice too), and an OLB (yes, we could use two of those as well), and maybe even a late round/cheap speed rusher across from Mario.

The question is, do we want to develop our young defense into a really imposing defense and become a defensive team? Or should we spend this offseason trying to fix holes on the offense? We're missing a lot of OL, and could use a RB, although I really think OL is much more important. We could be a team that is balanced on Offense and Defense, but looking at all these needs, it seems that the Defense, although talented, seems to have many many more holes.

I think that we should address OL in the draft, preferrably in the first and/or second round (I know, GASP, is that allowed?). Then, I really think we need to draft a safety who can cover, not just hit. Our OLBs are average and I think we can get away with keeping Greenwood and Clark for another season, but it wouldnt hurt to find replacements. What worries me most on our defense is our glaring need at our primary DB spot. Hopefully we can fill that need in FA, since I really don't trust our secondary to have a rookie CB and a second year CB.

Thoughts?

Any chance if Spencer comes back and doesn't have his full flexibility or speed, would he get moved to RG. Weary is a free agent remember.
