NFL Skipped National Anthem

Skipping Anthem an un-America move by NFL, Steelers

The NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to start their Monday Night Football game without the National Anthem according to the Denver Post. Bad enough football has taken away all our free time in the fall and early winter. Now, it's going to take away our patriotism?

This time, it seemed like the NFL had gone too far. The game between the hometown Steelers and hapless Miami Dolphins was delayed roughly 25 minutes because of horrendous weather. Understood. The rain drove with the intensity of a hurricane residue. There were frightening lightning strikes, a strong wind, a swampland for a Heinz Field playing surface.

Everyone ran for cover, from the fans in the stands to the players on the field. But the Star-Spangled Banner was written with bombs bursting in air. Nothing's tougher than the National Anthem. The NFL hardly seemed worthy of its red, white and blue insignia colors by canceling America's most honorable song so the show could on two minutes less late.

I didn't know about this and saw it on Yahoo. Just thought I'd pass it along. :patriot :patriot

Oh please. The NFL decides to skip the anthem because there are horrible weather conditions and people get bent out of shape? Get a life

Is there a law that says the National Anthem has to be played before any sporting event?

Oh, no - someone call the Groupthink Police and get them started on whipping the NFL back in line.

I'm not even sure why the national anthem is played/sung at these events anyway. We don't do it anywhere else. You don't have the national anthem before watching a play. What an odd tradition.

The game was delayed and the anthem wasn't sung....it's not really that big of a deal until someone blows it out of proportion. I'm sure there's something more important going on in this world.

i'm not a fan of it either. and i think one "pledge of allegiance" should be more than enough for a kid, not every single day for his stay in school.

As someone who's family has a history of serving overseas, as someone who has friends serving overseas, and as someone who loves his country as much as anyone else...even I find it a tad bit ridiculous that this issue has been blown out of proportion to such an extent. The NFL simply didn't have the time to delay any longer, I highly doubt that this was a personal endorsement of al Qaida on their part.

If it makes anyone feel better, I heard Vince Neil was supposed to sing it. I think that's reason enough to cancel it.

Hmm, I just saw this mini-article, had a laugh, and posted this thread thinking no big deal, I kind of thought it was funny. If I was going to take a side I think they should play it. You can type up your reason why they shouldn't on your nice computer, under your well-built roof, between your bites of food while pondering what you might do on this leisurely Sunday paid for by many of your forefathers, I'm surprised at the reaction.

The reaction kind of reminds me of a song by comedian Rodney Carrington called Show Them To Me. At the end he thanked the ones who did and told the rest, "We've got people putting their like on the line overseas for freedom and you can't even whip out a &^%*@% tit!"

I keep hearing what a big deal you guys think this is and I haven't heard a thing except for the Yahoo story, so obviously this isn't.

I still think this is no big deal and kind of funny, but I can be bothered to acknowledge my country for a couple of minutes while I'm apparently risking my life the three hours watching a football game.

I'm a little surprised at the response. Actually surprised that there was a response. One of you doesn't surprise me, most of what you say seems designed to ruffle feathers, but geez folks have a little pride in your country.

Let me play my Veteran card - I know the National Anthem, I know what it sounds it like. I neither have to sing the The Shoe Tying Song to remember how to tie my shoes nor the National Anthem to prove that I'm Patriotic.

I have always wondered the same thing. What do sporting events have to do with nationalism anyway? I remember when I took my wife to her first sporting event here in the states. She was pretty weirded out about it since they don't have this tradition in Europe.

OK folks. Standing up for two minutes and acknowledging your country is a bit much. It blows me away I'm in this discussion by my self, quite frankly. That's pretty sad.

Stand outside in that terrible weather and worship your team, but for God's sakes another two minutes in that nasty, dangerous monsoon to acknowledge your country? No way, right guys?

it doesn't bother me to stand for the anthem, but it also certainly wouldn't bother me if they skipped it. not a big deal either way.

I find it really weird how Americans seem to play the national anthem at all their sporting events.

Find it almost as weird how you seem to actually like your anthem. Although not having a ridiculous piece of propaganda for a useless relic of a bygone age might help. Infact, not having a useless relic of a bygone age for a head of state would be nice. Ohhhh, how I'd love to live in the USA... or Russia. They had the right idea when they killed all their royalty.

But yeah. Playing the national anthem all the time = weird. Complaining because the national anthem wasn't played for one sporting event = sad.

no country has more trumped up patriotism than America and no country gets more hysterically upset when said trumped up patriotism is "violated."

The anthem was canceled because of the time circumstances, it had nothing to do with immigrants. Trust me, there is no one on this board (that I know of) who hates this country.

When I was in school we said My beloved Pledge every single day we were in school and I was proud to stand there and say it

Let me ask you just one question????????

Would you cancel the prayer for you grandfather at his funeral because of time circumstances?????

It has nothing to do with time,...... it has everything to do with NATIONAL PRIDE!!!!!

THERE IS NO REASON TO CANCEL THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. WHY COULDN'T THE NFL JUST EAT A COMERCIAL OR TWO? THEN THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE SAMETIME SCHEDUALE!!!!!!

Rut roh, y'all jerked the big FILO Doc's chain.

Now y'all got your hands full... git 'em baby. :blowakiss:

You don't mess with this man's patriotic feelings.

So jailing someone over blaspheming a deity is utterly ridiculous, but assaulting someone over not worshiping a flag is good old-fashioned justice, eh?

Just checking.
Okay sissy, Let me understand your stance on this issue......................................... Are you telling me that every man, woman, son, daughter, father and Mother that has ever served MY,OUR, AND your GREAT COUNTRY AND MAY I ADD THE DAMN BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD................. has served in vain??????? Are you telling me and the people on this board That you would NOT stand up and fight for her (Our Country) or what she stands for???????

Why would you NOT stand up and pledge for the flag and country that gives you the right to spew your Liberal babble.

Now to answer your silly little question-------------- YES I WOULD ASSULT ANYONE DISGRACING OR ABUSING OUR FLAG, BUT I WOULD NOT CALL IT ASSUALT, I WOULD CALL IT A GOOD OLD FASHIONED AMERICAN ASS WHOOPING

If nobody stood up for our country or our flag or our rights, then we would have rape victoms being caned, beaten, or put to death by our "so called friends"

This is why I am so vocal on this subject because I dont want to be punished or jailed for my beliefs.

Let's not even go down the raicisim road with "Rearend" Jessie Jackkass" or Quanell 10....... 0pps I meant "X". Just look where they are taking this country....... I will bet Martin Luther King JR is rolling over in his grave and rolling his eyes saying what in the hell are these people doing? These people are doing the same thing all our other enimes are doing to our country. Trying to take our pride, Loyality, trust, and everything this country was founded on. As soon as you take pride and the American way out of the schools, then the court house, what next?????????? Are you going to stand by and let them take GOD out of the Pledge of Allegiance? Are you going to stand by and let them take Christmas out of December????? What about the Easter Bunny??????????

git r done, filo. seriously you're like a caricature of every dumb hippie-hating stereotype one could every think of. you're like an SNL character. keep it going though, it's hysterical.

PROTIP: America isn't the most free country in the world. whoops! i said it.

There was a time when a prayer was appropriate before some events. I remeber playing football in high school and a prayer was said every time. It still goes on at rodeos in many areas.
I personally am in favor of the national anthem. I get disgusted when I see men standing and not removing their hats. But, I guess that's their own stupidity.
For me...I'll say my prayers, sing the anthem and fly my flag. This is the greatest country in the world and I am proud of it.

What makes it so great is that we are born with the RIGHT to act like assholes or sit & stand wherever we want.

We can even wear a hat at inappropriate times.

That kind of stuff doesn't bother me. It just makes me happy to know that I live in a place where people can make a choice like that and not be killed or beaten.

I dont have to tell others how they are supposed to act just so that they know I am a patriot. It's enought just to know that I am. I dont have to prove it.

And by the way.
FILO_doc, I love you baby. You are right on.
I'll stand right beside you and sing the National Anthem.
God bless you.

I don't disagree with that. But, I think that is shows a lack of respect and poor up bringing.

The national anthem is symbolic of this country, which is filled with lots of symbol-minded folks. So play the song to make [almost] everyone happy.

Americans=good. Everyone else=bad. Or something like that. :cowboy1:

All hail patriotism! Go U.S.A.!

So lets see, some network execs decide to forgo the national anthem because
a) The weather is horrible and
b) They are already way late on their time schedule

And people get this upset?

I mean, this is land of the free right? Capitalism and all that jazz? What happened to the right of the network to decide to skip the nat'l anthem? Sure they could forgo some commercials, but hey, its all about capitalism, baby. Its their right, and makes them more money. What could be more american then that?

As someone who did serve and fight for this country I realize I was also fighting for the leftist who laugh at those who still love this country, but I also fought for my right to think that those same leftist are misguided fools with poor upbringing who seek to bring down what they don't understand. I realize that is "fashionable" to talk down this country, but I choose to follow the road less traveled. I have a mind and don't need Jane Fonda or Hillory Clinton to tell me this country has problems. I don't need Hollywood to tell me how to vote and that the entire worlds problems are my fault because I am a white, male, Anglo-Saxon protestant.

Check out some of the newspapers from other parts of the world if you think this is the only county in the world with problems. In England the government just "lost" personal information on almost every person on it's tax roles. Half of their leaders are in a scandel over campain contributions. In Mexico warlords are killing singers for singing out againstdrugs. As for Peru, I wonder if some fat guy in his Lima office has a picture of an American child on his office wall from "World Vision" like I have a picture of a kid from a poverty sticken town without running water.

I will have to claim ignorance here because I don't know of any rule that says they have to sing it...but they do have media booths, well and personally its one of the few places I get to hear it anymore......don't feel it should have been eliminated and feel the officials had more to with it

Oh great, another my daddy is bigger than your daddy/My flag is bigger than your flag conversation.

I dont think people realize that they forewent the song one time. Its not like the NFL is saying "Never again" or even "whenever we need time, its the first to go"

Maybe there are situations we don't understand, like they couldn't bring broadcast equipment into the pouring rain. Maybe the person they hired to sing it wasn't willing to stand in a thunderstorm. Maybe the speakers werent loud enough to play through the rain. Maybe the person singing that day was a sick child who could have died from pneumonia, so they decided to spare her life. Maybe the person who was going to sing it was a war veteran who already had pneumonia
