Bandwagon Fans

I have a question, to anyone who will chime in:

What makes a bandwagon fan, well, bandwagon?

I've heard it said on another thread that a bandwagon fan is someone who: a) does not live in the city of the team and b) has not been to the stadium. That describes my relationship with the Packers, but I don't feel I am a bandwagon fan because I chose them when they, not to put too fine a point on it, sucked. Stink. Stank. Sucked.

Background: I was distraught over the Debacle in Buffalo. (If you are a Houston fan, I need say no more -- you know what I am talking about.) Just heart broke. I went searching for a surrogate team to love. And there were the Packers. An up and coming QB in Favre, recently thrown away by Atlanta. Sharpe, Sterling. Fun fans. Yeah, I can get into this. I started watching games with other Packers fan club in my city (Austin). Good times.

Now, football has returned to Houston. And I've been with the Texans from the beginning. I still hold on to my love for the Packers. GB vs HOU? No question. :fans: But DAL vs GB? C'mon, give me a tough one.

So, what constitutes a bandwagon fan?

by this definition I would have been a bandwagon fan up until this years TNT game, soley because I didn't have the money to travel to houston to see a game.

to me and most people i talk to bandwagon fans who like a team because they are doing good and want to be involved in the celebrations. But once the team starts losing they say the team has always sucked and move onto the next team with a winning record
 
A bandwagon fan who changes teams to the front runner. I can certainly understand after having one to many heart breaks giving up on a team and switching but you did not goto the prinnial power house or the team that looked like it would win the Super Bowl no you chose a team for what ever reaon but you have not swtiched on and off of teams depending if they are doing good or doing bad.

That is a bandwagon fan.


Let me add this little gem.

You see all those stupid Ass-Clowns with yankee hats on, just ask them when they started being a Yankee fan and why?
 
A bandwagon fan is:
1) A person who does not stick with one team through the years, or
2) A person who is a fan of one team, but only cares about them if they're winning.

Now, every year I've picked somebody in the playoffs to cheer for since we haven't made it since the 90s, but that's only when the Oilers/Seahawks/Texans didn't make it. (Yes, I was a Hawks fan between Houston teams.)
 
A bandwagonner leaves the Tennessee game between start and the end of the game. And Houston, We have a lot of them

tell me about it...down by 2 TDs at 1/2 time=stadium 1/2 empty, i found it funny in the 4th quarter when the stadium was 1/2 empty they announced the 70,000+ people attended the game
 
a bandwagoner only cares about the happy moments with a team and don't really care too much other than having a rooting interest. won't see many bandwagoners on message boards.
 
1. Follow teams only with winning seasons. Will withstand one or two losing season, after then, see ya.
2. Loyalty is individual specific. If a well liked coach or player leaves, then so will the fan.
3. Will threaten to give up tickets if the organization doesn't choose a favorite draft pick or signs some one the fan doesn't approve.
4. Can't withstand criticism or taunting from other teams fans about their chosen team.
5. Spends more time in the restroom than watching the game.
6. Interested in seeing and being seen at the game, but not really interested in the game.
7. More interested in dodge ball than what's going on on the field.
 
Bandwagon - start liking a team because and when they're winning. Playoff bound. When the team sucks, you pick a new team.

For example, NO was my bandwagon team last year. This year, because the Saints suck, my new Bandwagon team is GB.

Hey - until we make the playoffs I have to have SOME post season interest!

Apparently, it's a subjective definition.

I tend to agree with PapaL's post above from wiki, that a bandwagon fan is one that only roots for winning teams. And by this definition, a perpetually losing team cannot have a bandwagon to jump on.

However, there appears to be a broader perspective, as well. As aj pointed out, every team has a bandwagon, but it might be empty most of the time. Examples of folks materializing as Texans fans when we were 2-0 is his example. My thoughts were that these fans were Texans fans all along, but they have had no reason to be proud of the team. But I do understand these type of "fairweather" fans being a subset of bandwagon fans in general.

I am a NFL fan, and more specifically, a Texans diehard fanatic. I will always root for the Houston Texans, even if they (God forbid) go 20 years without a winning season *cough*Saints*cough*. But through thick and thin, I will be with this team as long as they have "Houston" in the name. I do not feel superior in anyway, and have no desire to disparage other fans for not being as hardcore in their devotion to the team. Too each their own, I will not sit in judgement. It takes all kinds, and there is nothing like a winning sports team to bring a city of millions together.

I'm a casual Astros fan (season is way too long to be intense, IMO), and I will admit that I could care less about the NBA and will be a bandwagon fan for the Rockets from time to time.
 
A bangwagon fan likes or dislikes a team only because it drafts or passes on someone he/she likes. Hope he doesn't turn out to be a bust. Yes I do, read my sig.
