Phantom penalty at the end of the Colts/Chargers game

No matter who you're a fan of that was a horrible call. I hate seeing the referees decide the game and Lord knows as a Houston fan I've seen it enough of it. To name a few... Rockets mavs game 6, more Oilers and Texans games than I can count, the back of the endzone in 79 ok I don't REMEMBER it... but I've seen it enough and of course there is 86 1st base vs NY.

Then there was the call on 4th down. You can argue they should have made the FG. A 29 field goal is no problem. But even that piece of crap kick is good from 15 more feet in. He missed it by inches. I don't care if you hate them though. That was a horrible call. "Simulating a snap"? Nobody moved illegally. It was a legal shift. Offensive line didn't move and of course they were simulating a snap. That's exactly what you do in that situation. I understand its not in the spirit of the game. Its in the same vein as icing a kicker. I don't really like it, but it happens all of the time. You can't allow everyone to do it.

It is illegal for the defense to simulate the snap count. The defensive players can't simulate the snap count vocally. That is a penalty, but I've never seen it called the other way. I looked it up and it says no player may move abruptly .. but that's about it. I just think its a horrible call. If you're going to crack down on it or start calling it by the letter of the law, let the competition or rules committee make that determination on say wed. not Sunday night.

Somebody's definitely not clear on the rule, that's for sure, because somebody else got penalized for simulating a snap this weekend. I think it was the Seahawks last night.
 
How about two inadvertent whistles? One in the OSU game (leading to a no INTcall and instead an ILL TD) and one in Sunday's game (leading to the loss of about 70 yards on the INT).

Seriously, inadvertent whistle? = crappy officiating

Do they plan made up calls the week before so they can get it in more than one game?

If you can't stop sucking on something in your mouth then take the damn whistle out and leave it out until you need it. Who cares if you blow on it late, it is far better than blowing it early.
 
Yeah, I despise the Colts and I was scratching my head on that call. Its a shift Indy has done for years and now they call it? And to say its only five yards doesnt cut it when football is a game of inches. The refs dropped the ball, period.
 
funny i thought it was vinatieri who dropped the ball.. either way its still a chip shot..

if it turns a 48 yarder into a 53 then yeah i see the point but he still shouldve made it comfortably
 
Shoulda. But shouldn't have had to. I wasn't upset seeing him miss, but from 5 yards closer even that crap was good.

Its becoming a trend in most sports really. Do you know how you know if a game was officiated fairly? If you don't discuss it. As an official you don't want to be talked about. I can think of too many games recently in which the officials have been too big of a factor.

I remember when we played the Chargers. Sure we played a horrible game but the officiating was even worse. I don't understand with like 8 replay angles, how we don't get BETTER officiating. I wish they would give refs the ability to go back and request replays. Maybe limit it. Maybe use those times for the "TV Timeout". There have to be ways to do it.

The worst sport is baseball. I can't stand Selig and I can't stand his stance "The human element is part of the game". Are you kidding me? We know we have a better way to make sure calls are going to be correct, but bad calls make the game fun? It looks like they are finally going to make the HR balls reviewable.

In football why isn't ANY play reviewable. Here's an idea. Let the play go until the play is actually stopped. Don't call it down if its definitely not down. Then if you have a question, in the 30 seconds teams take to get plays in and set.. let the booth review EVERY play. If something is wrong FIX it. I know the game may take a little longer... I know it gives hosts on the radio something to talk about. But as a fan there is NOTHING like being the victim of bad calls. Hell even if you are the beneficiary of bad calls, you know it could have effected the outcome of the game.

All of the major sports are way behind when it comes to using technology. Whether its medical, official or otherwise the only thing they seem to be concerned about is media coverage. I know there is nothing you can do about it. Nothing will be done. Which is a shame.
