Everything happens for a reason

Do you believe in this statement - Everything happens for a reason?

I do, now for a list of my hypothetical situations.

Say some of the positive effects of Kubiak coming here are...
1. getting Matt Schaub here
2. getting Rick Smith here
3. coaching up Matt Schaub at QB (he is good with QB's)
4. helped to turn around the losing attitude in our players

Now say Kubiak gets fired and we get Bill Cowher (I wouldn't be to dissapointed about this)
1. you get a great head coach
2. he hopefully keeps a good QB in Schaub
3. he hopefully keeps a good GM in Rick Smith
4. he turns the attitude in this team around even more and makes them hard-nosed tough players like the old house of pain days
5. he brings in great assistants
6. they coach up Mario to be everything we dreamed he could be
7. we become a playoff team consistently
8. we win at least one superbowl

I know - some big if's. But my point is some great things that might happen in our Houston Texans future might not have been possible if not for the things that have happened in our past. One example , if we didn't lose as much as we did we wouldn't have had high draft picks and gotten our future stars.

I don't know if Kubiak will get canned (I think it's possible that he could turn things around and become a good head coach) and even if it does happen I don't know that we would get a coach like Cowher.

What I am sure of though is that when things turn around I'll be there, and I'll be even more satisfied when we win that superbowl and I look back on our rough history that I sat through every minute of not giving up on my team. I'm glad it hasn't come easy and I'm glad it won't come easy - just look at the Red Sox. Those fans had to wait 86 years for another championship and now they have 2 in the last 4 years. Can you imagine how satisfying that must of been for the old man who had been a faithful fan his whole life and got to finally see his team hoisting that champoinship trophy? That's what I'm talking about. It may not happen for us for many years to come but at least when and if it ever does I'll be there, and I'll have one huge freaking smile on my face. I might even shed some tears like I did as a young kid when I suffered through all those heartbreaking Houston Oilers loses, like the Buffalo comeback, but you know what all this pain we feel now and have felt will make the victory that much sweeter!

OR, everything could be a confluence of events that when things mix together, they either work or they don't.

I'm also one of those people that believe that some stupid thing that happened 10 years ago (like getting a red light) affects your entire life.

McNair hasn't got enough money to pull Cower out of the booth. And that's saying something. The guy they need is Jerry Glanville. LOL that'd shake things up. Hollywood John would have an aneurysm. Look what I got out of the HCs 610 show today is they aren't going to do squat. Line the same guys up. Do the same things again and prey for devine provdence. Might work.

OK - the Texans suck for over five years. I need a reason for that.

Never mind, the reason is a series of bad personnel moves, followed by poor coaching, poor strategy and execution on the field, and complete despair in the locker room. I could be wrong, but that about sums it up from my POV.

That's a large part of it.

The other part of it is that the NFL owners were still bitter about the Panthers and Jaguars quick NFL starts. At the time those teams came into the league, teams hadn't figured out how to keep their best players under the salary cap. So with the Panthers/Jags having big money to spend, they were able to get quick starts as franchises.

The league limited the number of picks the Texans had, and the expansion draft really served to dump players who were underperforming their contracts. We had to take Boselli (who passed the physical) in order to get other players from the Jags. Taking Boselli's contract really ended up bailing the Jags out of some of their salary cap hades.

The Texans had to overpay for any free agents to come here because who wants to play for an expansion team.

With such a beginning, you have little room for error. And the Casserly/Capers regime made quite a few that we need not dead horse.

And now, we have a do-over. Having to put together a staff in short order.
Switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 means we have players not terribly suited to whatever we are trying to do. Remaking the roster.

The team has been working on creating depth, but isn't there. And you have injuries at just about every position you don't want injuries at.

I will tell you what is nice about the team even amongst all the suck. The Texans community feels more like a community than the Oiler community ever did. Part of that is the internet, and part of that is the tailgating. I used to plan every Sunday around watching the Oiler games, but that planning only entailed people I already knew.

With the Texans, I've got to know tons of other fans who care as much about the team as I do. Not just the people who sit around me, but lots of fans. And that's kinda cool. It would be cooler if the Texans were winning, but I have to say having tailgate buds helps when times are tough because at least you have that to look forward to even if there is some crazy bad stuff happening on the field.

I do not doubt the coaches saying that the team is playing hard. I saw a lot of evidence of that. I also think if it weren't for bad luck, the Texans would have no luck at all these days. Lots of flukey weird stuff going on. The way the balls are bouncing, the ref calls, the way that Schaub got crushed, all those injuries on the offensive side of the field.

It's rough times now, but I will say that if you stick through a team during their lows, it makes it more better when things are good. You care more so it means more. It's the difference between sorta rooting for a team, and really rooting for them.

I have never seen so many fair weather fans in one place at one time before. It takes time to build a winner, we have possibly half the players we need to compete. The Capers years were a waste, Kubuik and crew are only thru 1/2 of their second year. It will take time to build. At the end of next season will be the best time to judge Kubiak, not now. I would love to be 5/3 right now instead of 3/5 but we are not good enough yet to warrant that record. It pains me to watch and root for the Texans now just like everyone else, but given time it will be worth it. No matter how bad it gets I will be a Texans fan, they are my Team and always will be, Hang in there coach, some still believe in you and the team, Our day will come.

Because these boards are heavily moderated, I will refrain from issuing the tongue-lashing that you deserve for this comment. 99% of the folks on this board have been here through all the storms and have discussed this team at great length. There are no fair weather fans here, because there hasn't been any fair weather. If you made that statement out of ignorance, then I'd cut you some slack, but if not, then that's one of the most insulting posts I've seen.

Most people on this board are not fair weathered fans. In fact, the majority of the fans that post here are some of the most passionate fans gathered. Many folks are displaying their frustration and dissapointment fueled by that passion - especially when it seems like the last 4 or 5 games have been played flat, with no intensity. If we were losing games because a lack of talent only, most would understand - but we have been getting punched in the mouth without ever having taken a swing back. That alone calls into question this teams heard and desire.

I agree with Kubiak only being halfway through his second year, but there is clearly something wrong within the chain of command of coaches. Some theorize that Kubiak's and Sherman's offensive philosophies actually conflict, rather than click. Some think that Richard Smith is not the right guy to be the defensive coordinator (both are notions that I subscribe to). That is fans merely discussing different issues with this team and their progress (or there lack of)..

To close out, I will again reiterate that this message board is home to some of the most loyal and passionate Texans fans - found anywhere.

I think Sherman is the problem on offense. He did nothing at Green Bay and he does not have the same offensive philosophies as Kubiak. Are we a zone blocking team or a power blocking team? I say get rid of Sherman and add another west coast offense coordinator so that everyone is on the same page.

Fair weather fans are people who are only happy when things are rosy and we are winning. Real fans stick and support their team no matter what. I stuck with the Oilers for years when things were worse than the Texans are now. It chaps me to hear all the moaning and groaning that comes from some of these threads. Thread after thread rips the coaches, administration, ownership and players. I personally hate negative people, be constructive and supportive for a change. The Texans will eventually mature into a great team. I for one will support them in every way I can.

Tell me what is "rosy" about the 5 1/2 years this team has been around. Super, we have a team! Too bad they are lousy and have never made it to .500 ball. If folks can't come on here and give truthful analysis, what good is the board? Maybe there should be texanhomer.com for everyone that prefers to stick their head in the sand?

Unfortunately, my hometown team will not get over 6 wins this year. In fact, we will be damn lucky to match '06. The fact that we brought in a rookie head coach after 4 seasons of loosing football tells volumes about the ownership. It tells me there is no immediate desire to win. It looks to be a calculated move to coincide with falling attendance. Just about the time Houston fans begin to walk away from this team, Kubiak will start to come into his own. That is the smart business move when the bottom line is more of a concern than winning.

There, I said all of that and I'm still a fan. Going to watch the Texans tomorrow i/o the Pats - Colts. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being objective.

Yeah, there is some moaning and groaning. Some of it is knee jerk and some of it is legitimate. Heck, some of it is just venting to get some of the frustration off of your chest so you don't kick the dog.

FWIW, you'll not find a more dedicated group of fans that what you'll find on this board. Thick and thin, win streak or losing streak these folks are ALWAYS here and always pulling for our guys.... And we all want to see the franchise succeed and there is actually a lot of positive feeling here for where we are headed.

It goes back to that scene early in Animal House. Otter and Boon are watching Neidermeyer torment Flounder on the ROTC drill field. The comment is passed that "He can't do that to our pledges. Only we can do that to our pledges!"

Well, that's like what it is here. This is our team. We endure the 6-10, 4-12, 2-14 seasons. We can complain but God help you if you try it.

So you expect us to scream into a pillow when we want to say something negative about the team we suffer with year in and out?? Just the fact that this board thrives ought to tell you something about the loyalty of Texan fans, and we're not going anywhere. True, it takes time to build a winner. I remember thinking impatiently when I heard talk of a five year plan but it is a fact that it takes a while. Man, how cool would it be if five years was all it took.

Well I'm a gloomy gus for sure. But I'm not a closet rat Dallas cow Pokes fan either. I live and die with this team.This TEAM. I don't give a good GD about the Pats -Colts game tomorrow other than I hope both QBs recieve career threatening injuries. I hope that Indy looses another OLT and they get to watch Manning get pasted for three quarters like I've watched our QBs get pummeled for five years.

But...if the emperor has no clothes on I figure I got the right to stand up and say that. If I don't undertand why we've passed on day one o-lineman for three drafts and our o-lineman can't open a crack big enough to get a beam of sunlight through...I got the right to call them on it. I don't understand why faggins is still in there.I don't understand why C.C. Brown is still starting. I don't understand with the stagnated center issue we've got, why we haven't seen some younger legs in there. And if I'm showing a little wear and impatience, I figure I should recieve a little grace from the simple fact that I'm still willing to send Mr. McNair my money to watch this sub par football tallent. 3-5 .It's ok with you if I post sub par tallent ? But what is infuritating to me is being told by this HC that the above situations are just dandy and everything will work out. I was born at night , but not last night. You though my freind, the raw raw guys, come in here every August and get everyone whipped up with your 10-4 and 12-2 posts. I try to hold my water. I know you're baseball guys never played much orginazed football., get bored when the 'stros stink it up...but I believe you do more damage in here than I do. Get everyone whipped up with unrealitic expectations and then after the team craters we never see you again untill the following August. So in a way you're correct. hey, it's the Fan God! He's here to dictate His 10 Commandments of Being a Good Fan. ...or not

Give me a break. Who are you to call out any fans? I've been a season ticket holder since 19-10 and proudly worn my colors to more losses than I care to remember. And I'll be the first to say that while I'll be there for years to come (God willing...the real God, not you, btw), I have the RIGHT to voice my opinions and displeasure of six seasons of mediocrity.

Not all of us can be blind homer fans who delude ourselves with visions of grandeur from too much koolaide drinking. Get over yourself. A fan is a fan is a fan, and they come in all forms.

Be educated: a "fair weather fan" is someone that only supports teams WHEN THEY WIN. Also known as "front runners" and "bandwaggoners", they have no desire to spend their time watching bad football for perpetual losing teams. See Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees fanbases for examples. If you have to use the term, at least try not to be ignorant with regards to it's common definition.

I thought I was a fair weather fan because I don't like the roof open when it's raining.

If you want to see some fair weather fans, wait till this team starts winning, and see all the people claim they have been a fan all along.

Then when you ask them an easy question like "who scored the first TD for the Texans?" and then the get a deer in the headlights look and start to back up and crawdad

I don't understand why so many are dumping on Kubes so quickly. This is his first HC gig, he will make mistakes most HCs do. I remember Bellichuckles in Cleveland - they were terrible - he made mistakes - but I'd say he's clearly learned from those over the years.

Patience is a virtue, and I understand that it is easy to get frustrated, especially with the stinker they laid last Sunday. I was at the game - quite possibly the worst experience of my life. I will however give Kubes some time to get this figured out. The one coach I would rail on is Smith. He needs to get these guys going. They have talent on the DL he just needs to figure out how to get these guys going - that is what good coaches do.

Becuase he is obstinate. I like the guy. The Robinson injury will force his hand with the DBs on the roster. Faggins should of been on the bench two weeks ago. Now Petey must start. And the only way they win a couple more games is if they take the hand cuffs off of Smith and tell him to go sic 'em. Now the paper this morning stated flatly that this HC disagrees with that. Stuborn.
I have no problem with him learning on the fly. I think Smith is being given way to much credit on this board for how much power he has at calling the D game plans and schemes. They have an offensive coordinators finger prints all over them. Smith stated out as a crazy persons specail teams coach. The guy isn't shy about taking a chance.

Same for Flanagan. I mean three weeks in a row Dayne looks like he has cement in his boots. And this game he looks like he did at Wisconsin busting thrity yarders down the sidelines. Either someone found some young juice or the o-line ran across someone who was missing a high end run stuffing DT because of injury. You figure it out. Did the o-line suddenly become studs. Or did provence deliver in to their hands a d-line crippled by injury ? Maybe I'm too future happy. I want to see what they have for '08. Do we need to draft center or is he already on the roster ? And there is no substitute for being on the feild and banging. They need to in MHO, find out what they have on the roster. And the only way you do that is let them get some snaps.

back to topic...things happen for a reason?

perhaps Dunta's injury gives the team the incentive to make a serious push for a top FA CB. Even if Dunta doesn't begin next season, when he does return, our secondary becomes a strength instead of a liability.

I hear what you are saying and I can see your point. Loyalty can be a tricky thing, but I think (atleast I hope) he will learn to balance his loyalty to players and the best interests of the team. You know the funny thing about Smith, for most of the game we don't blitz that much, and we play pretty well out our base D - not great but not terrible. In the Titans game we make this furious comeback, take the lead, then on third and 8-9 with little time left in the game he decides to blitz and we get burned. Maybe he is just having bad luck this season. While I am abosolutely against the prevent D, alittle cover 2 in that instance would have been nice. Force Collins to dink and dunk his way down the field. I don't know.

Silver Oak, agreed I think we now have to target an upgrade at CB in the offseason. Bennet is showing promise and I was hoping we would have that position tied up, but DR has a pretty serious injury. Maybe we go LT first round, RB and FS in the 3-4 and target a CB and interior Olineman in FA.
