Ahman Green and the swollen knee

Okay, so I listened to Kubiak's presser today and was listening to him talk about Ahman's knee and the peek-a-boo swelling in it: Here today, gone tomorrow, back two days from now.

As I was listening, I thought immediately back to DD/DW's knee and the swelling that accompanied that balky joint. I know that was a degenerative condition in DD/DW and, after week 2, we just heard that Ahman had a bad bruise and it had caused some swelling.

Well, here we are at the halfway point in the season and this knee bruise keeps on pumping out fluid.

I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV. But at what point do you say "If it walks like a duck, yada yada yada" with regards to this knee? I think we all knew that Green had little left on the tires when he got here (if for no other reason than age and number of carries) but could this knee spell the end for batman?

At least with Echemandu we've got some hope that maybe it's not the end if he sits out, but still, it looks eerily similar to Dom's knee.

I said similar things at FanHouse in September.

Though it is good that Green doesn't have anything structurally wrong with his knee, a diagnosis of bruised knee with swelling doesn't provide Texan fans lots of comfort. Similar words were used by the team last year with Domanick (Davis) Williams, and that led to him never playing again, and the season long Texans running back experiment. Green in his radio show was very optimistic about his knee, but with this team it is hard to tell when you should be optimistic about a particular injury.

DD/DW's knee was described as a knee bone bruise. It swelled upon activity. This isn't looking very good for the good guys.

As I discussed before, and what most fantasy sites have not been following closely, is that Domanick Davis' knee has been a concern for the team, even before the draft. He had arthroscopic surgery before the season, practiced the first day of camp, but had immediate swelling in his knee. He obtained an outside MRI that gave him the good news that there was nothing he had that required another surgery, but that he had a "knee bone bruise" and that his knee may never end up feeling the same as it did prior to the surgery.

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on the web, but apparently an MRI showing a bone bruise is something that can be very serious, is difficult to treat and predict healing and may lead to posttraumatic arthritis. It's handy for a running back to have his knees.

Edit: After I posted this, the Houston Chronicle's John McClain wrote this good article that I thought should be added here. He explains:

"Davis can't be placed on the physically unable to perform list because he passed the team's physical before training camp."

The gossip as stated by John McClain on his radio show a couple of weeks ago is that the Texans believe that Davis' knee will never feel right again, and that his issues at this point are more mental than physical. That Davis is just going to have to get used to the fact that his knee will never feel the same when he runs. It is possible that the Texans feel this way, though just my non-doctorly review of the medical literature suggests how difficult it can be coming back from a bone bruise that shows up on an MRI.

The Good News

Joe showed that maybe the Texans running game is not dead yet. That maybe the offensive line can do something.

The Bad News

He pulled a hammy during the game and went back in. He had that hamstring MRId.

I told y’all he tweaked his hamstring a little bit, which kept him from finishing the game the way we’d like to see him finish, with a lot more carries. You never know with those kids until you give them a chance, and we took a chance by letting (RB) Samkon (Gado) go and giving this kid a chance and he stepped up and played well in a tough environment. He protected the passer very well, too, which was something we were concerned about, so I think it’s a big step forward for him and then hopefully he’s healthy enough that we can continue this process. Hopefully he’s not going to take some time here; I don’t know. He’s being evaluated today. He’s having an MRI as we speak.”

Hamstrings can be flaky and are handy to have if you are a running back.
 
A couple weeks ago on his radio show, Ahman Green used the phrase "bone on bone" when describing his knee. It's in the streaming archives at SR 610 or 790, whoever he does his show with. I know, because I had to go back and listen to that part again after I heard it.

Maybe one of our orthopedic guys could enlighten us, but I thought that pretty much meant the meniscus was damaged. If so, that's not something he's going to be back from. He may keep doing the week-to-week thing, but he's not going to play like Ahman Green.
 
Ahman Green is going to end up being 8 million dollars down the drain just as I feared he would be.

I'd say "I hate being right all the time" but I'm not right all the time. I'm not even right most of the time. I really wish I'd been wrong about this.
 
Well it was just a little bang. I got it tivoed somewhere. Soon as he rubbed it I knew he was going to miss the rest of the game.

Well that was two of us. I got crucified becuse I wasn't dancing up and down like a fool in here when they did the deed. Why don't you like ahmen Pete ?...because he's thirty. You're so stupid pete. Well there ya go. And the funny thing is we keep doing it over and over and over again. If it was a child sticking his finger in the power socket we'd think that kind of behavior was kinda , well stupid. What the hell is wrong with that child ?

I'm just about out of looking at a half full glass. When Kubes went to bat for the free Satey and told the 610 audeince how well he's been playing...he lost me. Yeah they hit something off the scap pile. I got it. But we still suck. And that light at the end of the tunnle is the sixty car freight train and we can't get out of the way. And further the head coach thinks the lights are kinda prety. I'm just getting weary of watching the team scramble and claw their way to aweful. The next terms for the team will be the "H" & "G" words. I mean if we got the truth that'd be one thing. But what we're getting is the uranation on the boot and the HC telling us that's it's raining.
