Its getting worse in Austin! (Titans crud)

BigWig

Bigimus Wigimus
So I am going to work and liteneing to 1530 AM ESPN radio here in Austin, and keeping in mind all the issue we have had with Titans fans and VY and yadda yadda I hear this commercial:
Big announcer voice " More Texans are switching to Titans" then it goes on and its about Texans getting a Nissan titan p/u, but the presentataion we very clever. All this after this same station hosted a whole call in show about VY fans and the Titans, arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!:pirate:

1530 is horrible.
They're very cowboy oriented.
I try to get 610 on the car radio or listen to the ipod otherwise.
It's amazing how AUstin is 160 miles from Houston and it's like the Texans just don't even exist.
I don't give a flip about it anymore, it's not worth getting riled up about really.
I know My team and with 610/790 and 1560 now streaming, I can get plenty of Texans info that way.
Screw the idiots at 1530 and keye.

I was actually going to write a thread about something similar to this that made me quite sick. I'm watching the game on sunday at a sports bar here in austin and both the Texans and Titans games were on where I was. Even with VY out of the game, most of the crowd continued to cheer for the Tacks. It's got past the point of cheering for VY and it seems most VY fans cheer for his team like they're the freaking Longhorns. Makes me sick....I can understand part of the crowd in Cowboys gear and all, I mean they're from texas atleast, but cheering for a VYless Titan team.

at 3rd base there were VY fans (will not call them titans fans) cheering against the Texans. So after our game I stuck around and cheered against the Titans, they seemed to shut up after that.

Of course before that happened, cryboy fans started arriving and talking smack and bad mouthing Texans fans for being Texans fans.

I knew I should have stuck around and watched the game to see how much crap they would have been talking afterwards.

We don't seem to be the type of team to blow people out, but if we could blow the Titans off the field in the "KEYE BOWL" maybe that would shut those losers up for a while. Grr, when I see Titan jerseys around Austin it makes me want to punch people.

Wasn't Central Texas more of a Cowboy fan base for years? It's not like they shifted from a Houston based love affair to the Titans. It's more like they are mainly split between the Cowboys and the Titans now that the guy that brought them a National Championship is a Titan. I know there are a lot of Texan fans out there, but I've always perceived that there were more Cowboy fans than fans of the Houston pro football franchises up there.

With their track record, it's pretty much a given that Limas Sweed will be a Titan too. :) That's not gonna help.

Not sure how it was before (Oilers) but now it is. The news people never mention the Texans but they make sure they comment on the Cowboys. I think part of that is the fan base and part of it is the marketing issues within the Texans front office. I have been here a while and I have never heard of them doing one single thing to help build the fan base or do anything for the fan base that they have here.

If they do not do something it is hard for the media outlets to know how much of a fan base is here. I asked Gary Vinson this and never got an answer, Neilsen boxes are put in homes with generally a family base, single guys are not used often by the neilsen because they would not watch the shows that they want to create ad revenue for. Especially single males that love sports, they still avoid that market research side. OK back to my question, how many of the homes in the Austin area that do have a Neilsen box are graduates of UT? That would put a huge bias in the ratings which in tail would not accurately depict the Texans fan base here in Austin.

Of course the huge populationg of ex-ut people are here and I still do not classify them as titan fans, more of vy followers. In 5 years when his contract is up and he wants to go else where and play they will follow him there versus being titan fans. I also could see them disolving themselves of the titans if vy does not keep winning.

So as far as shifting, I am sure there are some who shifted from the oilers to the cowboys, but I would not expect them to admit that.

I think it was always a Cowboys town even during the Oiler days because it was only in the last 7-10 years or so that the Cowboys moved to Oxnard, CA from Austin for their mini-camp or whatever it's called... or maybe now it's in SA and not Oxnard anymore. Not sure - but it used to be in Austin and that was always really popular here.

Vin, I've been here since 1983 and you are right about it being Cowboy country. It was never pro-Houston ANYTHING and it never will be. Within the last year I got to talking to this guy who had a Rangers cap on and I asked if he was an Astros fan at all. He recoiled and said that no way was he an Astros fan. I asked why and he said the Astros have been around too long to have never won it all. I laughed and pointed out the Rangers have won one playoff game in their miserable existence and he thought I was wrong. He grew up in Austin and listens to the media around here and that's what happens, I guess, when all you have is Austin media all your life.

It has always been "fashionable" to bash anything Houston ever since I got here 24 years ago. When the Cowboys were 1-15 you couldn't find a guy wearing a Cowboy shirt, but that's all you heard on the radio. People I know suddenly started wearing Cowboy garb when they started winning, taking pride in their bandwagon mentality.

The dumbest thing you can do is a radio station on-air and ask why about the anti-Houston sentiment. They will interrupt you in mid-sentence and stay, "Ohhhh here we go with another poor, mistreated Houston fan. What is it with you guys........."

As far as backing the Titans team, I think there are 2 or 3 other Horns on the team who somehow managed to play here without getting arrested so they might be rooting for those guys as well as Vince.

Around here when they get around to pro sports, it's Spurs, Cowboys, and they don't yet know what a baseball is. Most folks here don't even know the Express is a farm team of the Astros and root against Houston during their annual game (no kidding.)

Houston has hosted a World Series, a couple of Superbowls, NBA Finals, the Houston Open, and I'm just keeping it sports when I go over how much better Houston is IMO.

What was good about Austin has long since gone. Now it's just weird, and that's just the way they like it.

Vinny, if you're a Texan fan in Austin there are two separate issues here:

1. Cowboy fans: It's true anywhere in the country- As a rule, they are both ignorant and obnoxious. You can actually get into a heated argument with most of them by saying that they aren't "America's Team"... As if that has some objective meaning. So, in Austin, you have a lot of those guys.

2. UT fans: As a pro football fan, these people are pervasive and annoying- before Vince became a pro. The local paper is obsessed with the school as is the broadcast media. For a city of over 2 million (counting the burbs), its myopia is incredible. UT fans are the worst- not only are they lame and ignorant but very myopic. It's very difficult to find one you can actually talk football with. Furthermore, they really love blowouts. I've never seen anyone clamour so much to catch New Mexico state vs. a powerhouse live and spend $100s to do it. Oh man, when they win 60-13 you won't hear the end of how good the team is.

So, as a Texan fan in Austin, I'm surrounded by ridiculous Cowboy fans and myopic college fans that now directly impede my ability to watch my pro team play on Sunday. The insanity of the UT fan is that they don't watch pro football. But now, because of one player, they demand it. It's obnoxious. It's impeding. And, it goes against what I believe separates the NFL from all other professional sports: the NFL is still a team game!

PS Showtime, you are correct about the Rangers only winning one post-season game in their history

Year Round Opponent Result

1999 AL Division Series New York Yankees Lost, 3-0

1998 AL Division Series New York Yankees Lost, 3-0

1996 AL Division Series New York Yankees Lost, 3-1

AND that includes the 10 years they spent as the Washington Senators

While driving thru Dallas Friday on the road to visit my brother up in Missouri, I had the radio on a station named "The Ticket" which seems to be very popular in N.Texas. Anyway, at about 1 P.M. they broke into regular programming of a sports talk show to cover a press conference with Jerry Jones. It was amusing, but also very interesting, almost fascinating to me and my wife as Jones talked and then had a Q & A and it
actually went on for about an hour. You'd have thought the guy just won another SB !
Jones talked about how excited he was to get all of the attention again with the big-game against the Pats that upcoming Sunday in Irving. After hearing him in that presser, I have no doubt he'd play OJ no matter his personal history if he thought he could help his team win. But I thought to myself that if our owner was that intense & focused about his team winning we'd already have been in the playoffs.
I'm including this in this thread because Jones talked about "Cowboy" fans and mentioned stats which included his boast that they have 98% of the SA fan base, and I think he included Austin in those stats (98%) . Could that be possible, or is it just Jones talking thru his butt ?

i live in leander and you couldn't have said it any better

VY makes everything and everyone around him better.

He can cure methicillin-resistant staph, but the government will not allow him to do so. A friend watched VY make a 3-egg omellette with just 2 eggs. Fed Chairman Bernanke regularly consults Mr. Young on monetary policy.

His sweat smells of lilacs, and the IRS does not require him to pay taxes. He gave Earl Campbell his famous sausage recipe.

Chuck Norris is afraid of VY. Upon hearing this, Vince Young then cured Chuck Norris of his phobia.

He has personally appealed to KEYE on behalf of Texans fans, because he cares that much. But, alas, even Vince Young cannot reach everyone.

:tease:

Yesterday on the way to the post office, I saw something REALLY SICKENING.

A truck had a sticker on the back window:

It was a the state of texas with the titans colors in the shape of the texas flag inside of it, and it had a big flaming meatball where Austin is.

I wanted to puke.

i was reading the scouting report and what i didn't realize was it's not just vince young. they have a longhorn:

QB
FB - Ahmard Hall
TE - Bo Scaife
CB - Michael Griffin

that's a pretty serious direct connection to them.

Yeah, next week we'll be back to no TV coverage. The Titans play at noon, and the Texans play at 3pm - but both games are CBS games, and CBS does not have the doubleheader next week... so I think it's pretty safe to assume that KEYE will go with Titans/Raiders rather than Texans/Chargers. Especially since there was a confilct last week they chose the Texans over the Titans.

I think there's alot of closet Texans fans in Austin. I frequently see people around town wearing Texans gear. I also wear Texans gear alot and I always have someone comment on the team to me as if they were a fan. I've never received a negative comment. Maybe people don't want to admit it because of the continued losing seasons or the VY debacle or maybe because they're afraid of those mean cowgirl fans(ha!).

Turns out my gut was wrong in my previous post. KEYE is showing the Texans this weekend, but will opt for Colts/Patriots the following week instead of Raiders/Texans.

He's talking out of his rear. Jerry Jones is is too much sometimes. Why do Cowboy fans worship him?

Take away that man's right to be called a Texan. My god that's terrible.

That, frankly, I understand. Giving the NFL market the best game makes sense. My beef with them is showing the Titans because they have a UT alum on their team. As an NFL fan, I know exactly why the Colts/Pats are being shown next week- It's great football!

I concur. I will be watching the Texans game, but have the other in picture in picture or DVRing the game becuase that should be a good one to watch no matter who your hometown team is.

Austin is a college football town - simple. Majority of the people here love Longhorn football and want to follow the guy who lead UT to a national championship.

Its no surprise that they'd rather watch the Titans than a startup franchise in Houston who had the oppurtunity to draft him instead of a DE.
