The Miami Dolphins select, Alex Smith, QB, Utah

Resisting the urge to select Cedric Benson, the Dolphins look to Alex Smith to get them back on the map. Smith has a great mind to go with a great arm and should make the transition to the NFL smoothly. Alex is a exceptional field commander and reads defenses very well, his mobility will also be a plus for this young man as he emerges on to the NFL scene.

Defense wins championships. And nobody knows that better than Phil Savage, the man who drafted 10 pro bowlers on the Baltimore Ravens from 1996-2004. In 1996 he selected Jonathan Ogden, and Ray Lewis in the 1st round.

Savage signed a 5 year deal with the Browns, and will start with a bang by drafting Derrick Johnson, OLB from Texas. This will be the cornerstone of his defense for the next decade. And Johnson is one of the best linebackers to come along in years.

The Cleveland Brows select with the #3 overall pick, Derrick Johnson, from the University of Texas.

The Bears select with the 4th overall selection, Mike Williams, from USC

It was tough to decide between Mike Williams and Braylon Edwards. In the end, the size and athleticism of Mike Williams won out. The Bears dont need a Randy Moss.. they are a physical team and have been throughout their history. They need an Andre Johnson or Terrel Owens.. someone who is dominating enough to make their passing game explosive, but physical enough to do some run blocking as well.

Tampa Bay hasn't had a decent running back since the days of Warrick Dunn. While Michael Pittman is a servicable NFL starter, he is not the type of back that strikes fear into opposing teams. The Bucs picked up oft-injured Charlie Garner last offseason through free agency, who sat out most of the season with an injury.

With the 5th selection, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn

This was a somewhat difficult decision to make as a GM...My first instinct was to take Barron out of FSU and use him as an insurance plan for when Todd Steussie decides to retire, but the need for a franchise back seemed more important...The main deciding factor for Brown over Caddilac or Benson was his combination of size, speed, and receiving ability...

The reality is that i should have worked harder to unload this pick because the salary cap strapped (again) Titans probably need the extra bodies after another off season of cutting veterans. The Titans after letting Samari go will by pass the Rolle family. The Tennessee Titans select Alex Barron OT FSU.

Barron is a good sized athlete with good feet and technique as at Left tackle and should be an anchor at the position for years even though he is probably a slight reach at the number 6 position.

The Raiders have many needs. With their top 2 gone (johnson& brown) ,they take the BPA . The Raiders have a good secondary but lack a punisher, someone who can do it all cover backs and tight ends, stuff the run make plays on the ball and make any WR think twice about coming into his area.

With the 7th pick the Raiders select. Thomas Davis S Georgia

The Packers take Antrel Rolle CB out of Miami Fl with the 8th pick aquired from the Arizona Cardinals. Last years first round pick CB Ahmad Carroll hasn't been anything special so Rolle was brought in to start along with Al Harris and to move Carroll to the nickel/dime package. The Packers still need an OLB and saftey opposite Sharper to get their defense to where it needs to be, but Rolle was the right fit to really upgrade the defense and secondary immediately.

Antrel Rolle
Position- CB
College- Miami Fl
Height- 6'1
Weight- 202

The Redskins with the 9th pick in the 2005 NFL draft take Braylon Edwards from Michigan. One of the top playmaking recievers falls to #9 and the Redskins can not pass up the opportunity since their recieving corp has not played to expectations. The Skin's could have gone for a DE or a CB but Edwards is too hard to pass up.

Braylon Edwards
Position: Wide Reciever

With the 10th pick in the 2005 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions select Justin Tuck DE/OLB Notre Dame.

There's always a mystery player that shoots up the board out of nowhere, & this year will be no exception. The Lions need a pure speed rusher on the DL to replace Cory Redding. With James Hall on the right side, Tuck on the left side, & Shaun Rogers on the inside, Detroit should have one of the very best DL's in the NFL.

Tuck is 6'5" 261lbs. & has the frame to add another 10-20lbs., without losing his speed & quickness. He runs a 4.56 40 yard dash & is a terror on pass rushes. He should have no problems getting around the TE & his quickness will allow him to run around most OL. He's got several very effective pass rushing moves & just needs to refine his techniques. He added 15 pounds of muscle from his sophmore year to his junior year (He's actually a senior, but ND lists him as a junior) He's stronger than his 261lbs would suggest & when he adds another 10-20 lbs of muscle he should be unbeatable. He reminds me of Jevon Kearse.

He'll have to be used as a situational pass rusher at first, but will eventually take over as the starter. I didn't plan on taking him this high, but no one seems to want to make a trade & I felt he's too good to wait until the 2nd round to see if he's still on the board. So, there you go.

With the 11th pick in the 2005 NFL Draft; the Dallas Cowboys are pleased to select Shawne Merriman, a junior DE/OLB from the University of Maryland.

With the Cowboys leaning toward runnig the 3-4 next year, or atleast a mix of 3-4 and 4-3, the despratly need personal that can rush the passer. Shawne fills this role in either scheme. In the 4-3, he will play DE; and in the 3-4 he will play OLB.

Merriman is a physical freak at 6-4, 245 pounds with a 41 inch vertical. Shawne is an exceptional pass rusher, able to beat most OT with just his athleticism; and after some coaching on technique should be a force off the edge. An added bonus is that Merriman has experience dropping into coverage; saomething the Cowboys will ask him to do as a rookie.

The orgainization thought about taking one of the CB, but with the recent rule changes; the value of taking a CB in early had fallen.

The 2nd trade of the Draft:
Fiddy Vikings have sent their 1st and 2nd round picks to the Vinny Texans for the 13th overall pick.

The Vikings have traded up because they were afraid that someone else would trade up to take the 2nd best CB in the draft, Adam "Pac-Man" Jones. We have already missed out on Thomas Davis and Antrel Rolle. Our problem has been defense and if Moss isnt traded for defense, then Pac-Man and Winfield form a nice duo at the CB positions.

The Vikings have selected CB Adam "Pac-Man" Jones out of West Virgina with the 13th overall selection.

With the 14th pick in the 2005 NFL Draft the Carolina Panthers select Heath Miller TE Virginia.

In the "Age of the Tight End" Heath Miller is the next in a line of young TE's. The 'new' pass rules have made it more difficult to cover the big guys coming off the line and Miller should have no problem in that area. May still have some work to do to improve his blocking against NFL players. This selection will add a new dimension to the Panthers offense.

The Panthers were not excited to see two guys they liked taken at 12 and 13. I tried to talk myself into Elton Brown this high to continue the rebuilding of the o-line or that the RB durability questions were enough to pick up one of the top RB's still out there, but in the end the deciding factor was that Miller will definitely be able to come in and make an impact on offense as a rookie.

With the 15th pick in the 2005 NFL Draft the Kansas City Chiefs select Marlin Jackson, cornerback Michigan.

Marlin Jackson
Position- CB
College- Michigan
Height- 6'1
Weight- 196
40 Time- 4.40

The Chiefs need defense, and the whole league knows it. They tried bringing in Gunther Cunningham last offseason, but he needs some tools to work with.
Given that, and the emergence of defensive end Jared Allen to provide some pass rush, the Chiefs look to upgrade their pass coverage. Marlin Jackson is their man. After playing some safety and corner at Michigan, he was moved back to corner for his Senior season where he was solid, if not spectacular. He has played against top level competition and comes with a great deal of experience. Kansas City takes a step towards building a defense to complement their top flight offense.

With the 16th pick in the draft, the New Orleans Saints select:

Carlos Rogers, CB Auburn

Height: 6'1"
Weight: 194
40 Time: 4.37

The Saints would have liked to trade down, but with teams coming up that need a corner the GM was satisfied staying at 16 as well. Rogers has good speed and brings a physical presence to a defense that ranked 32nd overall in 2004.

With the 18th Pick in the NFL Draft the Bengals select:

Marcus Spears DE, LSU

Height: 6'4
Weight: 297lbs
40-yd: 4.80

The Bengals are in desperate need of a dominant force on the defensive line. Their more pressing need is DT, but there really wasn't a DT that I thought was worth a pick this high. Spears has the added versatility to play either DE or DT. He can give an added pass rush from the inside, and he's very good at stopping the run. He is among the best athletes you'll find at his size since he was once a TE at LSU. I considered trading the 18th pick in order to move down a few slots but with teams such as Houston looming who could really use young talent on the DLine I felt it best to get Spears while I could.

With the 18th pick, The SeaHawks will take RB Cedric Benson of Texas U.

Sadly, Shawn Alexander has made his intentions quite clear about going down to Miami. With a possible major cap investment, and needing to retain players like Hassleback and others, Benson would make a excellent replacement instead of leaving a vaccuum in this area. Other choices would have been DE Cody, and LB Channing Crowder, but with the power of this back still being on the board, the seahawks had to make the move. We are quite proud to have a dominating athlete like Benson.

Jack "beerlover" Del Rio once again addressing need for defensive line support convinces James "Shaq" Harris, who overuled "beerlover" last draft (wanted Udeze or Will Smith & went with Reggie Williams) that the Jaq's still have a choice between College Football's three most dominate ends in David Pollack, Erasmus James & Dan Cody. The Jaguars selection between these three reflects not just their future but the player with the most ability, mental toughness & most prepared to enter the NFL and contribute to the Jacksonville Jaguar front of Stroud & Henderson in 2005.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are happy to announce with the 21st pick Dan Cody out of the University of Oklahoma. Dan is a match for the Jaguars biggest need- a dominant pass rushing end, he has the largest frame of the premier lineman at 6'5" with room to add more muscle & weight 270lbs without losing a top 40 speed of 4.58 sec. Dan Cody also could drop back off the line & play spinner or spy like a OLB does in a 3-4 optomizing his playmaking skills (played 7 different positions during his high school career, including safety, quarterback, fullback and tight end).

Dan also has the experience coming from a major football program under Bob Stoops and his staff along with 5 years of dealing & overcoming personal issues showing his senior season that he has matured & will be ready to immediately impact & start for the Jaguars.

Rimington award winning David Baas, Center/Guard, Michigan, is the pick for the Texans. I project him to play Center where he has had starting experience at Michigan before moving to Guard. Steve McKinney's days are numbered. I wanted a defender (namely defensive lineman) here and almost took one. I just do not feel good about the Defensive Tackle value in the first round and Baas will be a ten year starter here, so that pushed me to take one of the top two interior linemen in this draft class. I picked Baas over Brown due to attitude, smarts, desire, and his fundamentally sound blocking techniques. Brown has a few question marks about his desire and his professionalism, or I would have selected him. Baas plays with a chip on his shoulder, and injects some attitude into our offense.

I wanted to see what I could do with 3 top-50 picks (after my trades), and Center was one of my priorities. After doing as much research as I could, I figured there was no sense in picking up a Center in the 3rd round or so that is no better than the one we have currently (line quality drops off fast in this draft). Bass has great size (6'-5" 330), can play both Guard and Center, and plays with a mean streak. One of the things I think we need is some fire and attitude in our offense. Baas gives us plenty of both and Michigan has produced plenty of top caliber linemen over the years. McKinney will be paid like a top-10 Center soon and will be able to fight Zach Weigert for the Right Guard position with this move. There are probably a few football players on the board that may have more name value or are sexier picks but this resolves one of our biggest interior needs. This move makes Dom Davis a more productive back, gives David Carr more line stability and hopefully an actual pocket to step into in order to locate Andre Johnson and Company.

With an abundance of running backs available this offseason (Shaun Alexander, Edgerrin James, Lamont Jordan, Travis Henry, Derrick Blaylock, Anthony Thomas, Chester Taylor, Jesse Chatman, Arlen Harris) the Cardinals feel that they have the leverage to not offer Emmit Smith an extended contract and can even afford to pass up a tempting target, Cedric Benson. Their main focus going into this 1st round was a good QB to backup McCown and to challenge him possibley for a starting slot. Once the 2 best QB's on the Cardinals board were taken, they felt it best to trade down and take the best player at one of 2 positions that many other teams had far to low on their draft boards. By Trading down and picking up 2 extra 1st day picks in a draft that is solid in defensive players, The Cardinals have leverage in making deals to bring in offensive star players such as Randy Moss or Travis Henry in possible trades. The Cardinals were surprised when at the #24 spot the best CB in the draft fell right in their lap, Brandon Browner CB 6-4, 205 Oregon State. Browner will mature behind a defense ranked 12th in the league last year in the nickel spot until he grasped the starting spot and never look back.

I was torn between a couple, but thought that Vick needs more weapons passing for this team to do anything. The defense had a great year but Vick, to mature as a passer, needs WR. The Rams have the 30th pick as a result of a trade with the Steelers.

Before the Rams (8-8) can focus on its draft or free agent targets, they must get an idea of who is going to return from this season’s roster. They have 14 unrestricted free agents this off-season, most notably LT Orlando Pace. The Rams designated Pace as their franchise player the last 2 years. This year one of 3 things will happen:

- They will let him go (and have lots of money in FA);
- They will franchise him (and they will have a starting LT, but no money for FA); or
- They will sign him (and have a LT and some money for FA).

The Rams can’t hope to replace a veteran #1 overall pick with a later rookie pick, but may not have to. Time will tell.

Other positions also need to be addressed. Significant contributors DE Bryce Fisher (UFA); LB Tommy Polley (UFA); LB Trev Faulk (RFA); FS Antuan Edwards (UFA); S Aeneas Williams; S Rich Cody; OG Tom Nutten (UFA); OG Chris Dishman (UFA); TE Cameron Cleeland (UFA) all could be gone.

http://www.stlouisrams.com/article/47930/

In addition, by increasing the general talent level and depth on the defensive side of the ball, they have a chance for an immediate improvement to one of the league’s worst special teams units.

When a team is 8-8 in the NFC, they aren't one player away from the Superbowl. The Rams do have a young, proven QB and a top young RB, as well as key veterans.

With it's first of six first day picks (4 in the real draft), the Rams select Matt Roth (6'3" -263 lbs) Senior DE from Iowa.

Matt Roth - "Ranked second in the Big Ten in QB sacks per game (0.88), tied for second in forced fumbles (four) and ranked fifth in tackles for loss per game (1.2) . . . ranked 13th in the nation in sacks per game and 26th nationally in forced fumbles . . . moved from linebacker to end in fall practice prior to 2002 season . . . only true freshman to play for Iowa during 2001 season."

The Saints went defense again, hoping the pass rushing Blackstock (known as "Sackstock" in HS) can provide speed and aggressiveness to their 32nd overall ranked defense. With Carlos Rogers and Daryl Blackstock hopefully working into starter roles early in the season, the Saints defense looks to make a huge turnaround by the end of the year.

Rookie
The Rams select ILB Channing Crowder (6'3", 245 lbs, 4.6)

Strengths: Has been extremely productive since day one of his true freshman year...Great athlete...Very good size and speed...Tough and physical...Aggressive...Active and makes plays all over the field...Has excellent instincts...Solid tackler...Has not yet reached his full potential.

Weaknesses: Durability might be a concern because he has had a couple of knee injuries and then suffered torn ligaments in his right foot as a sophomore...Has only played major college football for two seasons so lack of experience may be a concern...Needs to get stronger...May have some character concerns.

Notes: Only a true sophomore eligibility-wise but was able to enter the 2005 NFL Draft because he has been out of high school for three years after delaying enrollment to rehab a knee injury...Crowder supposedly considered entering the '04 Draft after Maurice Clarett initially won his court case so the NFL was on his mind...Was real close to Ron Zook, who he considers a father figure, so his firing may have been a factor in pushing Crowder to go pro.
