Jacoby is Back!!!

Was about to post this....

But...

(on going out there with more firepower this week) “Well, to me the biggest one’s Ahman (Green). To have him back and his ability back in the backfield is a big plus for our team. From a receiver standpoint, I can’t sit here and tell y’all enough how well those kids have played. Even though Jacoby (Jones)’s back, those kids have been playing and doing a heck of a job; they’re going to be hard to get off that field right now, and he’s found that out and I think it’s helped him come back a little faster. So hopefully that pushes him.”

(on if WR André Davis and WR Kevin Walter will still start) “Yes. Nothing will change. David (Anderson) will play in the three wides and then Jacoby (Jones) will be a backup for those guys.”

Great to see him back but hopefully he's not forcing it out there. I'd like to see a healthy Jacoby Jones over one who's not fully recovered. Last thing we need is a Jerome Mathis type situation where it's a nagging problem.

From Kubiaks notes, it looks like we will probably mostly see Jacoby returning punts...

Kubiak is absolutly correct to leave things as they are for now. Our Wide recievers are playing their ***** off and have done extreamly well. Why change it if it aint broke. Jacoby is the future #2 for out team no doubt, but for now, those other guys have a slight edge over him. We will mostly see him in the red zone for his slight size advantage, but otherwise its rolling in the pass game.

i thought wynn did well returning kicks last week.. he'll prob keep doing that so jacoby should just be doing PR's..

Excellent news.

The Jag's Punter is only 5-11, 198 lbs and a Rookie....Jacoby should have no problem taking him on one on one this time around. :wild:

Good to see Jacoby back. You mentioned the Jags punters weight and height but did you mention his 4.4 speed (He has also posted 4.3 but we will just say 4.4) that is what really counts on a PR? Oh and he is a great directional punter. That should limit Jacoby's open field. Also throw in two of the best gunners in the league in Starks and Owens. Don't expect too much from Mr. Jones this weekend. So the only excuse you should have this weekend is now limited to AJ. I can handle that!

Damn, I don't know anyone who knows who the gunners are on their teams ST's.

All it takes is one small mistake or some good blocking on our part and Jacoby can take it to the house........so we will just have to tune in and see.

can I change my score prediction

as much as the Texans need him what they really get out of this is the leadership he shows by coming back, rehabing hard, his desire to win & help his teammates. even if he is unable to break one off just his presence on the sidelines should help his team nut it up & be more competitive against a formidable foe in Jacksonville :gotexans1

I think your punter is closer to a 4.5 than a 4.3...

Still pretty impressive, but in the end it ultimately means nothing...

A punter with a 4.3, umm who cares? It is not like he is going to be the first one down the field. If he is even remotely close to being one of the ones down the field who is going to be the last line of defense, that would be one heck of a FUBAR situation for Jacksonville. It would be like putting up what a Kicker bench presses, whopdy f'n do? Can he kick a game winning 57 yard field goal? Ours can and that is all that matters. Oh and Turk is one damn fine punter with great directional pouch punting ability.

Leadership? from a rookie & 3rd WR? not likely.

& a punter with 4.3 speed means nothing when he's standing pretty much flat-footed & JJ is already at top speed. Throw in a little wiggle from JJ & it's more than likely over.

How often in the last 3 games have we needed less than five yards to score a TD or pick up a 1st down and didn't get it. If Jacoby is able to shorten the field by even five yards some of those pass plays that got us to the two yard line could now get us pass the goal line.

Amen brother... we need to get healthy and STAY healthy.

What happened in the Falcons game (getting to the opposing team's 1 yard line 2x and only coming away with 3 points) will never happen again as long as Ahman Green is carrying the ball.

The special teams matchups should be interesting.

The Texans have the #1 special teams in the league according to FO. The Jags are #10.

The Texans ST has been remarkably consistent in all different parts of the ST, from punting, field goals, punts, punt return and kickoffs.

The Texans ST coach predicted before the season started he thought that the Texans would have the #1 ST in the league. And so far, the Texans ST has really been one of the keys to the Texans wins this season, and have bailed the team out of various jams.

Matt Turk playing for the Texans will never likely lead the league in punting distance (though he has a big leg) because the ST coach puts a premium on hangtime and placement and not outkicking your STs, and Turk is doing great this year in putting punts within the 20. He is a significant upgrade to Stanley when it comes to situations where the Texans are pinned back deep and need to get out of a jam.

This is likely the most well-rounded Texans team to have ever played the Jaguars, even with their significant injuries. And I suppose maybe this will be the first time the Jags pay attention to the game, bringing out the Teal-Out and all.

The key to the game I believe will be the Jags QB play and ability to convert 3rd downs. Typically, Jag QBs have played non-well in their losses to the Texans, making poor throws and poor decisions.

Garrard, so far this season, has vastly improved his decision making, and if the Jags reduce the stupid stuff they typically do to themselves, it provides their best chance of winnig. They have guys who can run, so they just can't shoot themselves with the passing game. Their QB play has been solid and cautious, which is particularly crucial when they also have the ability to run the ball and don't need to have a particularly explosive passing attack.

I just want to throw out there..ok, name drop.. that my best friend since high school is the Asst Special Teams coach for Jax now..first year in and a Bill Walsh disciple. Tom Williams. I'm still for the Texans though.:)

I would hope not.

Though I will admit to some skepticism about whether Green solves everything with the running game. I will believe it when I see it when I see how he comes back from injury and what blocking happens up front for him and what sorts of play calling they do in the red zone.

Is it all because of the Center? I mean we were doing pretty good until McKinny went out. I knew Center was important and we needed help there before the season started but this is flat out sad.

Is it all because of the Center? I mean we were doing pretty good until McKinny went out. I knew Center was important and we needed help there before the season started but this is flat out sad.

McKinney went out late in the Colts game. The running game was pretty bad for all of that game. Ahman's YPC until he got hurt are much better than the rest of the backs, but it is hard to say now whether McKinney's absense will significantly hurt him or whether Ahman's knee is good enough since its reinjury to do what he needs to do.

Also, this is what coach said about the running game:

(on if the running backs are hitting the holes properly) “Well, like I said, I think there are times when maybe we don’t read our keys as well. There are times where we’re not doing as good a job up front. There are times that we’re running uphill; when I say that, we’re running right into a safety support system or something that we’ve got to get into a better play or call a better play, however that pans out. But I think it’s a lot of things. It’s not just one thing, and it’s everybody having to do something a little bit better. We put a lot of extra attention into it last week. It didn’t get a lot better this week. We’re going to go put the same attention to it this next week. We’ve got the people to do it, we’ve just got to keep battling to get it done.”

(on how much the loss of C Steve McKinney has hurt the team) “Starting off with Steve, Steve had a fine camp and was playing extremely well for us so naturally, you miss a player of Steve’s caliber. And we really miss him because he does a couple of things for us as a football team. He gave us flexibility at center and guard. He gave us the numbers on game day to where we only suited seven (offensive linemen), even though we only suited seven yesterday. So from that standpoint, his loss has been a tough one.”

(on what was different that made the run game better last season) “Well, as I said, last year at this time, actually if you go back and look, we were running the ball even less at this time last year than we are right now. So I don’t know if that’s encouraging or not because it’s still nowhere close to good enough. But how do you get better at something, John (McClain)? You’ve just got to keep going, you know? I mean, we could go out there and throw the ball 55 times; that’s not going to make us better running the ball. So we’re going down there this week playing one of the biggest, most physical football teams there is in the league, so there’s a tremendous challenge there. But we’re still going to have to run the ball. We’re going to have to go out there and try to run the ball and keep our third downs manageable, and we’re trying to keep this quarterback in one piece right now. We know we’ve got a guy who can go out there and throw it around. But for our football team to be successful, we’ve got to still try to run the football and try to establish the run because we can’t let him drop back 35, 40 times a week. It’s just not going to be good for us in the long haul.”

(on if there is anything he can do up front to help the running game) “Yesterday if you watched the game, we tried to spread the Dolphins out. That’s what we tried to do. We went to a lot of different personnel, spread the field trying to get a five to six man box and do some things a little bit different then we had in the past. When we looked at the game, we felt like we had some running lanes that we could do a better job of hitting. There were some times we didn’t do as good a job up front, like I said. When you’re struggling with something, you’re right, you have to start searching. One of the things we’re doing today as a staff, we spent the whole morning evaluating ourselves. I like to do that about every four or five weeks. I don’t like to wait until the end of the season and say why were we doing that half the year. We stop every four or five weeks and evaluate ourselves, so that’s what we did today. Hopefully, we found a few answers and hopefully, we’re going to get better.”

(on how much freedom QB Matt Schaub has to change plays and how could that prevent from running into bad situations) “Our running game is taught as such that we don’t mind running into eight-man fronts. The run game that we put in, we can adjust versus eight-man fronts. That’s something we have to do better, just to get better doing that. What I mean is, there were a couple time when we spread the field yesterday trying to get a five or six man box and all of a sudden we get a buzz safety of something that coming down in the hole, something that comes down very, very late that we can’t get to or can’t account for and all of sudden, you have a bad play. The way to fix that, we could give (QB) Matt (Schaub) more freedom. The way to fix that is to continue to throw the ball. People want to do that, so there are ways of attacking that. We have to come out of a game that we have 30 runs saying that we gave ourselves 30 good chances. We can’t have 30 runs and say on 22 of them, we should have had something positive happen here, but on these eight, there’s nothing we can do. You can’t do that because you’re wasting snaps.”

In sum, Kubiak is saying that there's a number of problems he needs to look at fixing. That might be a coach speak way of not saying Ron/Samkon suck, but I don't think so. I would like to see more of a flow between the run game and passing game. Where you can see them working together, instead of holding your breath every time it is a running play, hoping that it's not just another stuff.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. I keep seeing it posted...I'm just don't think he's going to over take Walter. I think he'll compete this summer. I think he makes a great slot guy. But I beleive Kubes is going to take care of his gem in the future. His going to polish it...put it in a position to shine bright. But above all , he's going to protect it in the future. J.J.'s job is to be the spark plug and playmaker. Untill someone takes that away from him or untill Kubiak says it's different, that is what he is the punt returner/ slot guy. What I got between the lines from coach is we're not going to expose our playmaker third round guy to injuries. We need him in November and December as well as October. Maybe I just read too much into his comments. And correct me if I'm wrong, but Walter's contract runs two more years.

And....don't be shocked if he gets his deal redone.

Is it all because of the Center? I mean we were doing pretty good until McKinny went out. I knew Center was important and we needed help there before the season started but this is flat out sad.

Sherman really believed that Flannagan had stuff left in the tank. and considering our back up was a fifth round guy, it wasn't a bad move. Might be coincidence, but the facts are in all the games that Flannagan has started we have had poor preformance out of the o-line. What, their first ten in '06 and the last one. So if it happens again this week...it's more than just coincidence. Jax has a very tallented d-line.

I just hope this isn't the season the chickens come home to roost for the o-line. There is a reason you draft them high. And We've never done that. They did the best they could under their circumstances. But it is an area that needs to be adressed. Upgrading the tallent in the o-line. Frye and Studard were a modest start. I hope there is more coming next off season.

LOL. they told J.J. that he should consider very carefuly whether to take on smith or not. Hopefluy he'll listen to the coaches next time. Save the body get out of bounds. I think they will protect the shoulder as much as they can the rest of the way.

I would hope not.

After watching last weeks game again I've come to the conclusion that both the Oline and the running backs are at fault.

But..there were many, many plays where there was a nice cut-back lane available. Like other posters have said, Dayne and Gado's vision is pathetic. Dayne obviously being the worse of the two.

Green will improve our run game if those same cut-back lanes are available. The question is how long can Green remain on the field?

I sincerely hope we get to have their punter chase our guys. I will take that on every play and give you change.

The interview with JJ on the official site seems to indicate that it's still not for sure that he's going to play. Man, I hope so. Field position is going to be HUGE in this game.

With a miniscule rushing avg within red zone, I don't think it is the distance keeping us from 6. We do not have a back that can run it in. We'll see if Green can change that.

Screw the Red Zone.

Let's just get the ball down to the 30-20 and then have Schaub throw for TD's.

Interestingly, Dexter Wynn and MJD are almost equivalent statistically as far as return average.

Actually, I agree with you on what we have to work with. I think our TEs and big receivers such as AJ have better chance of scoring than Rbs. Having said that a famous U of Texas coach once said that "three things can happen when you throw the ball and two of them are bad." We need a back that can score within the RZ.

I read Kube's words as the RBs are not reading correctly. The lanes are being opened and after the back goes through something goes wrong. I talking about the safety, that is a QB issue and I think Schaub will get even better as time goes by. I think I would prefer having a back with a 4.0 avg with no long gains than a Green type that gets a 20 + but no score and is 2.5 or so with out the one or two long rushes.
