LOS ANGELES -- A sports marketer who allegedly made improper payments to Reggie Bush while the Heisman Trophy winner was still at Southern California has agreed to meet with NCAA investigators and provide documentation of financial transactions between the two, according to a report.

The Los Angeles Times also reported Tuesday on its Web site that Lloyd Lake is expected to file a civil lawsuit in San Diego against Bush later this month, seeking to recoup money allegedly given to Bush and his family.

Good it is about time that USC pay for this because for the last few years they have acted like they were abve everyone and that they could get away with a lot of infractions.

I dunno, but about the time both started to suck on the field, apparently the Powers-That-Be decided that they were no longer worthy of an exemption from the kind of scrutiny most players & their colleges get ?

Agreed but unfortunately Bush won't get scratched even if he has to repay the money. I am sure the money he collected while at USC is nothing compared to his annual salary so he will just write a check and be done with it.

My $0.02

They won't touch Bush in the NFL, I understand that and NP as far as I'm concerned. What does annoy me about Bush at this point is all the money he's making off sponsers, which is so hypocritical because there are so many other players worthy of that fat cash-flow, if it based on on-field performance.
But the biggest deal is USC - why should they get a free-pass on this payday their own boy got while still a USC amateur when other schools get burned bad, real bad for the same behavior ?

The IRS might not look at it that way.

USC is making money hand over fist...I don't feel sorry for them at all. They pimp out the kids and make massive amounts of money on TV revenue...how much is their Coach making a year and how much is the 3rd string back making? Sure he may have a scholarship, but he doesn't get a dime of that gargantuan revenue stream called NCAA Football.

If Bush makes a ton of money as a corporate spokesman...so be it. It won't be the first time a corporation threw good money away on spec.

There's a lot of other handsome, well-spoken, personable young African-American football players in the NFL besides Bush who are atleast as productive on the football field as he is. Matter of fact, I can think of a couple of them right on our team.
And most of them would probably be better corp-spokesman & role-models to other young A-As than Bush. And I think that should matter to the corp sponsers, of whom there is a very limited number to spread around the corp wealth.

Except every big college does the same thing for its top athletes, they are just better at covering it up.

Under the table money is just as much a part of college athletics as free drugs, strippers, and booze are in the recruiting of college athletes.

Bush got so much fee pub on ESPN....you know corporations would not get as much free bang for the buck to use an athlete that had less National exposure. I thought you were worldly Nuns?

Did you honestly think it's just a coincidence that ESPN has a history of promoting Bush & USC while many of the cable networks sponsers feature Bush in some of their ads ?

The difference being that Reggie Bust was dumb enough to get caught.

From the story:

"Should NCAA investigators find that Bush received improper benefits, USC could be forced to forfeit games. The school could face other sanctions if it's proven that coaches knew or should have known about the alleged benefits.

The Times also quoted an unidentified source familiar with the situation that NCAA officials tried to include USC in the meeting with Lake, but the school declined to participate."

Not only forfeit games, but also forfeit Championships, Bowl money, etc.

Imagine what 2 years NCAA Probation, No Bowls, No TV, and a loss of say, 7 scholarships would do to USC.

I'm surprised it has taken the NCAA this long...

Bush was asked about this when he came out and he said if the NCAA called him he would not answer the phone. When no one is talking it is hard to get anything done.

eh, I just thought you were sounding like you were a bit surprised that some other 'good looking' player didn't get Bush's endorsement opportunities...I'm just stating the obvious. Bush got more free exposure than anyone I can think of his SR year and went on to be a top 5 pick....I'm not shocked corporate America threw money at him hand over fist with that kind of visibility...regardless of his actual worth. It just won't keep happening now that he isn't the player he was in College.

Wonder why???? Well, in such cases the NCAA then talks to the USC Coaches. They HAVE to spill the beans if they know of anything. If they lie about it, then the phrase "lack of institutional control" shows up in NCAA Reports and leaks.

That will scare away most top level recruits.

Remember what caused the former SMU football player to rat out the program back in the 1980's..... SMU stopped paying him....

I wonder how many big time college football teams do exactly what USC is being accused of doing and getting away with it?

I think it's less about on-field production than it is about hype. Bush got the Heisman and a ton of pub. It makes sense why coporate America is using his celebrity right now, especially because the NOLA/Katrina story still draws ratings and the Saints were a rags-to-riches story last year. This year...'eh...not so much, but the advertising deals were already signed a long time ago.

It was not the coaches per say, it was an agent who wanted Bush to sign with his new firm so he let the Bush famil have an expensive home they could live in for free.

Also when Joe McKnight was recruited he said that he talked to Reggie and that was a determining factor in him chosing USC (That is against NCAA rules) the poddle said no he talked to Reggie while Joe was in the room not that he actually spoke to him.

The NCAA just let that one go with out really doing any investigation. They have done as much harm as USC agents and boosters.

it certainly can't happen in aggieland. i almost know for a fact that that maroon escalade on dubs i saw reggie mcneal rolling around him was purchased using funds generated solely by mcneal himself.

What does the prove...?? I knew of a certain Memorial High School baseball player that drove around in a burnt orange hummer.... J/K

Back in 1979 A$M bought Eric Dickerson a Trans-Am BEFORE Signing Day...

Eric drove it up to Dallas to go to SMU...

I recall a certain basketball player who had an old 10 speed bike his first 3 years at UofH and then his senior year he was driving a brand new Mustang convertible.

He had the nickname of cadillac.

Do you have any evidence to back this up or is it just another lame excuse to defend your hero?

I went to school with a new a certain player (but was too young to play ball with him) that was probably the best RB prospect in Texas HS History. The size of Larry Johnson with agility on par with Reggie and a 40 superior to him. And yes, all of that stuff happened. I could add major colleges paying off high school coaches to land prospects as well.

Yes I am sure this is going on at Army, Navy, Air Force, Stanford and Nothwestern. Saying it happens at every school as a justification of it happening to a player you worship is about as smart as telling a ploice officer, well everyone speeds as he writes you a ticket. Wait and see if he does not find more reasons to give you tickets.

Unitl every school is caught you can not say it happens at every school. It comes off as trying to justify why someone did something that they knew damn well they shouldn't have.

I went to school with several players that made it to the NFL and none of them were given anything but a scholarship. And this was back in the 80's when it was much easier to get away with. Quit trying to justify what your hero did, it was wrong and he still sucks.

I played high school ball with Michael Goodson, who received offers from over 50 different schools (the kid had something new in the mail every single day), and not one of those letters offered him anything more than a scholarship.

You lucky motha....

Dude is a beast.

True.

Too bad he was only allowed to touch the ball about 10 times per game cuz our coach was afraid that he would get hurt & wouldn't be able to ride his coattails to a better job (he followed Mike from our high school to Texas A&M).

As I understand the facts and circumstances, this has nothing to with USC giving Bush anything.

This has to do with Bush's immediate family getting money from someone outside of USC. I don't believe there was a USC booster or reprensentative involved in the transaction.

Reggie Bush and USC probably knew what was going on but in one form or another chose to ignore or do nothing about it.

Unfortunately, the NCAA eligibility rules are very specific and very unforgiving with violations.

Bottom line, USC screwed up because they should have monitored Bush more closely and discussed these issues with him since he was considered the 2nd coming according to ESPiN.

If USC really didnt know what was going on then I almost feel sorry for them, but I find it hard to believe.

It's hard to miss it when your top NFL prospect is chillin with sports agents.

From what I have heard, USC had to have known. These guys were standing on the sidelines, in the locker room, and Reggie's parents were traveling to all the away games and getting nice seats.

But, here is the rub, they were hangin' with his step father, not Reggie.

Again, NCAA eligibility rules are very simple and unforgiving.

Question......the NCAA gave SMU the death card.......will they have the stones to give USC the same? My guess....Nope.

No way.

I dont see the program death penalty happening again, especially not to the golden program of college football.

The IRS might not look at it that way.

FWIW, I heard some rumory things that one of the things that scared the Texans away from Bush was the fear of federal income tax evasion charges.

The feds have a lot discretion with this sort of thing. Bush doing charitable things in N.O.s is something that was really wise of him to do.

I think the NCAA regretted totally destroying SMU's program to the point where they won't make that same mistake again. Punishing the innocent to that extent for the behavior of the guilty was draconian at best.

One of the most memorable quotes about the death penalty came from former University of Florida President John Lombardi, "SMU taught the committee that the death penalty is too much like the nuclear bomb. It's like what happened after we dropped the (atom) bomb in World War II. The results were so catastrophic that now we'll do anything to avoid dropping another one.”
