Grading the Dolphin Game

A Win is a Win for this team ... at this point. This game is about what we can expect the rest of the year ..... a combination of frustration and highlights.

WR - Grade=B+. Davis and Walter continue to get better every week. With no running game, they managed to look really good. Once AJ & JJ get back we will really have a WR corp to be reckoned with. I hope we will see more 3 WR sets.

TE - Grade=B+. Daniels is excellent and we just need to utilize him more and especially in the red zone.

Oline - Grade=D. No holes for the RB's.

QB - Grade = B+. Settling in very well. When we shore up the running game, he should become a very good QB.

RB - Grade=F. Frankly, I see nothing to be optimistic about here. IMO, we have no more talent than street free agents here so, why not bring others in (I don't know who but, there's bound to be some out there who just need a chance) and give them a try. I mean, I'm sure that they can run for at least a yard and a face of dirt just as well as what we have now ........ and you never know when you may find a diamond in the ruff but, you've gotta give 'em a chance first. SURELY, Darius Walker is AT LEAST as good as Dayne/Gado. At this point who gives a CRAP that the staff is comfortable with Dayne/Gado because they aren't performing and we can do better.

FB - Grade=C. Leach was excellent last year but, we can't seem to find a way to utilize him or Cook this year.

DLine - Grade=C+. Flashes of good stuff surrounded by big holes. Inconsistency seems to be a problem at this point. Perhaps experience will help.

MLB - Grade=C+. Too many tackles 5-9 yards down field.

OLB - Grade=D. Too many missed tackles and tackles 5-9 yards down field.

CB - Grade=B-. Faggins best game this year and Bennett has ability.

S - Grade=D. We just don't have the talent here. For every good play, there seems to be 4 let downs.

ST - Grade=A+. Kris Brown s/b special teams player of the week. Return game and coverages were good, too.

Coaching - Grade=C+. Clock management seems to be a recurring problem. Too many passive schemes on both sides of the ball concern me but, a win is a win and they have this team in its best position ever. Unfortunately, the rest of our division is stronger.

Jacksonville has been getting better every week and Garrard is having an excellent year and we tend to make QBs like him look better than they really are. We can win this game if we eliminate penalties, win the turnover game, get a couple of big plays on each side of the ball and maybe a big return, too. The Jags defense has been very good and, if we come out too conservative, it could be a long day. I think we need to open things up from the first series.

I'm still looking at a positive 7-9 or 8-8 year with a significantly improved team over last year.

Okay that's my take on it, what's yours?

My main concern coming out of this game is the 2.6 rushing average per carry against one of the WORST rushing defenses in the league. Jax just held KC to like 10 yards rushing yesterday. NOT GOOD. But nice report overall.

Nice assesment. I'll just agree that the o-line looked pretty bad, and the run game was abysmal. Chester Pitts is making too many mistakes, and Schaub took a couple of big hits. But there were no holes, and nobody to run through them. Not a good sign when this was the Miami Dolphins they were playing against.

But I am also concerned about the defense. Ronnie Brown had a pretty easy time against the Texans' front four. It will be interesting to see where Del Rio goes next week: does he want to run Maurice all over the front-four, or does he want to test his passing game against the Texans' anemic secondary?

You can't run the ball against bad defenses when you have a bad offensive line. I hear everyone on here talking about how good this line is, and I am still looking for what they are talking about. They have improved in pass protection, but when we go to run.... I hold my breath.

I agree mostly, but Im gonna go out on a limb and say WR earned an A. We converted so many 3rd and long, and had so many good pass plays called back by stupid penalties. They fought all day and deserve a lions share of the credit. Can you give lower than an F for the run game? They deserve a q or something. Daybe is way too slow to hit the hole, and Gado is average at best. They are bad.

Say what you will about Steve Mckinney's pass blocking, but his run blocking was very good. It's no coincidence to me that our run blocking sucked last yr until Mckinney took over at C, and it's no coincidence that since he has been out, the run blocking has sucked. I'm not saying he is the only difference, but I do think it is a contributing factor for sure.

Spot on white meat.

i thought CC and von both were pretty good yesterday- id give them a c or b-

the o-line deserves a c for excellent pass protection in the 4th q even when miami knew we were going to pass..despite the crappy run blocking

Walter particualrly impressed me on one of the very last plays, he caught the pass over the middle got smacked on the side of the head and was in a particular amount of pain, but knowing the situation pulled himself up and got back to the LOS so we didn't have to call a time out. Great Job.

So, last year the O line was fair to middling on run blocking, especially the last Colts game, but their pass protection was horrible.

This year it's the opposite with pretty much the same folks. I'm confused.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the run blocking has deminished due to our reluctance to use the ZBS this season which in-turn helped our pass protection.

JMO, but I think Dayne was giving an inhuman effort in those last few games last year. I saw him pushing around a lot of defenders to get an extra yard or two or force a hole. He's just not doing it this year. That's not a knock against him. The end result is the line is not opening the holes. That could be part players and part scheme. When Green is in, I think the Texans work the run-game differently. I could have missed it, but I didn't see much of guards pulling inside to open a hole during the Dolphins game. Also, I think Green is better adept at squeaking through the small holes, as opposed to Dayne who tries to blitzkrieg though them. JMO.

The passing game has really improved a lot, but I was giving a lot of credit to Schaub for that. If the blocking schemes changed I'm not really a good enough football guy to notice that. We did run better when Green was healthy, and our whole team was better when Green ran good. Hopefully he comes back soon, and hopefully we get a good RB in the draft next year. Green ain't gonna last to much longer.

walter looked pedestrian but does have better than expected foot speed, Andre Davis gets superior seperation but his routes take too long to develop & by that time Schaubs pass protection breaks down. B

TE - Grade=B+. Daniels is excellent and we just need to utilize him more and especially in the red zone.

if they could they would go to him more, watching da Bears last night Greg Olsen is also their go to guy, but then your setting yourself up for interceptions. you forgot to mention the other TE's I beleive the Putz tipped a pass he could not handle into the Dolphins hands for a turnover so as a group I'd only give them a B-

Oline - Grade=D. No holes for the RB's.

I'm not sure how they could play much better given all the injurys and or lack of talent of course there are no holes & Schaub lacks protection but until they address this area via the draft with more high picks/talent or better free agents the offense will be hindered. C

QB - Grade = B+. Settling in very well. When we shore up the running game, he should become a very good QB.

Schaub has won me over he stays poised & makes the best decisions given the circumstances but unless they can shore up the offensive line he will continue to take more punishment than neccessary A

RB - Grade=F. Frankly, I see nothing to be optimistic about here. IMO, we have no more talent than street free agents here so, why not bring others in (I don't know who but, there's bound to be some out there who just need a chance) and give them a try. you already mentioned they have no holes so exactly what are they suppossed to do? at least they didnt turn the ball over & where consistant (lost count of how many 1st downs they gained either one or two yards) but some of thats on the play calling too, not to mention the Center position. C

FB - Grade=C. Leach was excellent last year but, we can't seem to find a way to utilize him or Cook this year.

I beleive they threw to Leach last weekend & it cost the Texans a turnover. my quess is thats something they're working on improving in practice & implementing once they are satisfied its going to work, right now they need these guys to help in pass protection & creating running lanes for the backs B-

DLine - Grade=C+. Flashes of good stuff surrounded by big holes. Inconsistency seems to be a problem at this point. Perhaps experience will help.

I don't know if it was just me or not but seeing the size of the offensive lineman of Miami they seemed to tower (except for Mario) over our lineman & did an excellent job locking their man down. they seemed well coached & played hard to me, but to our defensive line credit we never gave up B

MLB - Grade=C+. Too many tackles 5-9 yards down field.
your talking about DeMeco remember & yes he did miss a couple arm tackles against Ronnie Brown, but thats a top flight RB coming into his prime & I think you can excuse him once or twice it certainly did not cost us the game B

OLB - Grade=D. Too many missed tackles and tackles 5-9 yards down field.

I thought Greenwood played inspired, best game I've seen him play & was probably somewhat due to playing against his old team. the other linebackers, Anderson/Orr where non-existant C

CB - Grade=B-. Faggins best game this year and Bennett has ability.

they werent tested much deep, Miami especially after Lemon came in just threw a bunch of quick slants. overall they did seem to have fresher legs & the one play they did go deep into the corner of the endzone Faggins stayed close to his man then looked back at just the right time to knock it away B

S - Grade=D. We just don't have the talent here. For every good play, there seems to be 4 let downs.

CC Brown was ok, Hutchins played some corner, confused myself about Demps & Boulware I expected this was the time & place for them to arrive C-

ST - Grade=A+. Kris Brown s/b special teams player of the week. Return game and coverages were good, too.

Kris was A+ thats for sure, but special teams had a hard time with Ginn B

Coaching - Grade=C+. Clock management seems to be a recurring problem. Too many passive schemes on both sides of the ball concern me but, a win is a win and they have this team in its best position ever. Unfortunately, the rest of our division is stronger.

A win is a win worth at least a B given the rash of injuries.
