This loss is on the defense

With all the injuries on offense, they played about as well as too be expected. The defense on the hand, didn't force any turnovers and failed to get the falcons off the field on third downs. Really disappointed in our "D". This was their chance to step up and carry the team to a "W". We need help in the secondary, thats for sure.

Really disappointed in the guy who was calling the defense play. When is Frank Bush taking over?

I don't think so. The offense turned the ball over twice. The D held the Falcons to field goals for the most part. I wish they could've had a couple of more sacks and maybe force a turnover at some point. I'm not totally embarrassed by the defense today, though.

The offense didn't do much either outside of Schaub and Davis.

The reason the Falcons moved the ball so well because someone thought it was necessary to blitz more than often. I can understand trying to get to Harrington...but it wasn't working. Our defense has the talent, but it is the coaches job IMO to put the players in the right spots. I may be wrong about the blitz, but it seemed we blitzed too much and Harrington was having a field day.

This loss has to be on the defensive playcalling more so than the defense itself. There seemed to be a lot of blitzes that Harrington saw and checked down on and we would get burned. I have no problem with blitzes but we made Harrington look really good with all the dump passes he made which kept moving the chains.

Although I agree with you 100% regarind the defense, I expected more than one freaking touchdown from our offense.

I have to agree with you on this one. The defense could not get a stop today when they needed it. The score could have been worse if it weren't for a bad penalty call Dunn...they would have likely scored a TD on that series that they settled for a field goal. Watching the game, I never felt like we were going to get the stop, even when it was third and long. Our D line played average against a team that has given up a ton of sacks to date.

It is hard to expect a lot out of the offense with so many weapons out, but we just played so bad at times, the injuries are no excuse. Our offensive line can't get the push needed to get the first on third and short situations. We seem to be able to move the ball well between the 20s, but just can't seem to get the ball in when we get in the red zone.

I need to step away from the computer. I still feel comfortable that we are headed in the right direction, but I am extremely disappointed in the WAY that we lost this game.

Don't worry man, seasons not over and I think we ARE headed in the right direction...I mean Casserly,Capers, and Carr are gone...that's good enough for now.

We are just a few pieces away...a safety, corner, and a RB IMO. I think a big reason our defense did so bad was the playcalling. We definitely have the talent from our front 7...that secondary though...

Blame it on the defense all you want, but in the first half...nothing transpired between the offense and the defense.

The offense and the playcalling left the defense on a island. Plain and simple. 21 let the Texans down a couple of plays.

We did seem to get beat on a blitz call for a first down on pretty much every Falcons drive. DeMeco played well IMO, his sack was pure skill on his part. Amobi played quite well. I wish the D-line as a whole could have played a bit better against the run like we have seen them do the previous games. Our secondary was absolutely terrible. Outside a few open field tackles for either no gain or a gain of little yards by Dunta, I didn't see the secondary making any plays. The Falcons mediocre receivers seemed to make plays on our secondary all game long. I hope to see Boulware getting significant playing time as well as Demps because while Hutchins made some plays tackling the first few weeks he was pretty poor in coverage today. C.C. I didn't notice much. A offense like the Falcons and their short passes need to be stopped by our 4 guys in the secondary. They were putting pressure on our safeties all game with a mediocre passing attack throwing alot of short range passing and our secondary didn't make any plays. That's not good; I really hope this doesn't become a reoccuring theme because our front 7 is pretty stout. Those guys deserve some help in the secondary and if we can't get help from these guys it's going to be a long season.

Penalties and turnovers lost the game today, it was a combined botched effort on both sides of the ball as far as I could tell.

If Richard Smith had swapped his playcalling strategies for Indy with his ones for Atlanta, we could have won both games.

Not blitzing and dropping back in coverage is impossible given that Manning can pick apart a secondary with time to throw (and also doesn't make sense when you know the best way to get into the psyche of Peyton is to keep in his face), and blitzing is pretty tough when Harrington is now getting rid of the ball very quickly thanks to some mid-September adjustments by his new HC.

I blame this one on coaching (about 75%) and stupid penalties (about 25%).

I just happened to listen to Texas coach Mac Brown yesterday while I was driving to the store, just after the Longhorns loss.

He said, "If the team wins, it's the players' fault. If the team loses, it's the coach's fault."

Notice in the 4thQ. The LBs would show blitz. The Harrington would check off and then we would call the blitz off. We started rattling him then. Why didn't we start that earlier?

It was Faggins, a couple of BS calls by the refs, Salaam's poor blocking and holding on the TD to Walter, and the horrible play calling by Kubiack, expecially inside the 20.

I think the coaching was the main reason.

i gotta say alot goes to the D but if your offense can not convert on multiple 3rd and 1 (or 2) your not gonna win...bad game all around, its just a bump in the road we got the dolphins next week @home, and then the jags...hopefully our offense will be back together by then and we will have a different #2 CB :texflag:

I missed the final quarter and a half of the game. I just sped through it on my DVR. I don't know about the defense, but Salaam was getting a lot of camera time.

The offense scored one touchdown against KC too. That is two out of four games with limited touchdown production. The offense is still a work in progress, even allowing for the injuries. The line needs to play better for sure, and it is obvious we have little depth at some key positions.

Couldn't agree more. Watching Carr today just made me feel better about the game. I hope Ahman is ready to go this week because I don't think Dayne is the answer. I hope we get all of our offensive weapons back this week.

I am excited about Andre Davis. The guy had a great game. If we can get past the injuries, our offense will be stronger in the next couple of games. We are developing some depth because of the injuries.

I hope Fred Bennet can get healthy soon and get some playing time. We need him to develop yesterday.

I was feeling down like I always do after a loss but I feel better now.

Let's get a W next week at home versus the Dolphins.

I'm hanging this loss squarely on Kubiak and the coaching staff. 2 trips to the 1 and 3 points for it. TERRIBLE play calling in some 3rd down situations and in 2 minute offense. We executed fairly well on both sides of the ball. Fletcher showed that maybe he IS the lesser of 2 less than start-caliber CB's. Just an all around diappointing and disheartening loss. I felt like I time-warped back to last season at times.

The defense is not the sort of defense that can deal with short fields.

You can't do 3 and outs, and fumbles with short fields and think you are going to get away with it, especially on the road.

The Texans cannot run the ball. They can plug and play a bit with the passing game, but the running game is a pile of dog turd.

That being said, this defense isn't so dominant that they can be predictable rush four and expect to win. It makes the offense too comfortable.

Oh man that makes me laugh so hard my side hurts!
:texflag:

What's so funny??

Last week, against the Panthers, Harrington went 31 of 44 for 361 yds, two TDs and no INTs. That's a 110 QB rating for those of you scoring at home.

You can't let Joey get in rhythm or he can kill you. Jpey suffers from the same sickness that Grossman does. When he's good, he's really good. When he's bad, he's awful.

When other teams run, we're okay. Good even. When they pass we're hurting. Our defense has five solid players and six positions in need of upgrading when other teams pass. Its very tough to try and disguise six weak spots on your pass defense.

I know after five years its hard to be patient but the truth is there are going to be growing pains with this team which equals mistakes and ugly loses like today where damn near everything seems lost. But the fact is this team has improved drastically and will continue to improve, and that includes coaching. However after reading most of the post of this and many other boards I suspect the players and coachs like the fans began to think this team was further along in its development than it really is.

Our approach to this game was horrible. Our dline cant get pressure because the ball is out in 2 seconds due to all the padding our CB's give WR's. Its painful to watch. I almost lost my lunch watching Faggins get burned. Also felt ill watching the dump offs to full backs all game. There wasnt that much pressure out there. All in all, a horrible game with plenty of blame to pass around to everybody.

Agree 110%. The offense did ok when you figure how beat up we are. But the D made Atlanta look like super bowl contenders. They've got to straighten that out quickly. Think about this.... Joey Harrington carved us up!
OMG.

There's no easy way around this. I think the Texans took a shot at CB and LT - the two weakest links. I expect every team to study this tape and note that they can beat the Texans if they pass away from Dunta and knock the teeth out of the left tackle.

That being said, I think the run-blocking was also atrocious, and some of the play-calling was questionable.

On the other hand, I was impressed with the defensive effort. They spent a lot of time on the field. It's just natural to lose effort when you're on the field that long.

The offense in the fourth quarter looked unfocused and beleaguered. They knew they could beat the Falcons, IMO, but they weren't concentrating on the task in front of their faces.

The cover 2 shell sucks when you only have 1 guy in the secondary who can hold his own.

I kind of figured we might be in for a game against the falcons simply b/c everyone here was already penciling it in as a win, even with all the injuries we had on the offensive side of the ball.
The Falcons had been getting it together in recent weeks & the 0-3 record was decieving, b/c they'd been in every game until the end.

It was a team loss. The D couldn't get off the field/cover anyone & the Offense couldn't convert 3rd & short at any point during the game/give the defense a little rest.

Schaub looked great considering he was running for his life all game b/c our line (sound familar) couldn't block worth a crap; run or pass. It wasn't the defense's fault that Salaam was getting owned all game & got called for holding on the KW's TD pass & it surely wasn't the Defense who fumbled the ball pretty much in FG range.

How anyone can blame this on 1 side of the ball is beyond me.

Great point. If you are going to put the onus on the cornerbacks, you better have some damn good cornerbacks.

Schaub looked good for what he was given, and the line is still a problem even with a new quarterback. Apparently Salaam wasn't upgraded over the offseason by adding Jordan Black to the roster.

Flanagan seems to be doing well, though. I had heard it was a tough decision between who should start - McKinney/Flanagan. Now I see why.

I just get tired of everyone looking to place the blame of a loss on 1 person/ or 1 side of the ball. This is a team sport & most times there is plenty of blame to be passed around.

having said that, i should be GRATEFUL we have Salaam, b/c Winston Justice, Holy *&^% you suck!

Everyone played bad, but the defense should be more dissapointed with their performance.

The defense is not the sort of defense that can deal with short fields.

Given the way they've surrendered 3rd down conversions, they are the sort of defense that can deal with any kind of fields. They have their moments, though. They'll get there, but in the meantime, it's like Chinese water torture - slow and steady kills you.

The reason I say defense should be more dissapointed is because they were basically at full strength.

Offense shouldn't use injuries as an excuse, but.....c'mon, the offense had a lot of guys injured. And not just any old guys....Key guys...

I can slightly excuse some of the mistakes they made...

But Defense.....They just didn't look very sharp...
