They were just talking about Dick Labeau(sp.. "la-bow") and how his zone blitzing defense that he "created" along with Dom Capers and how it has really turned around the pittsburgh defense.

So.. the pittsburgh defense.. (being called Blitzburgh now).. one of the, if not THE top defense in the league.. uses a defense very much like the one we are trying to create here. and our "***** head coach" is one of the two guys who created it.

SO.. keep that in mind next time you wanna talk about how our defense doesnt work and how dom doesnt know what he is doing.

... my comment there didnt really apply to this game.. it was a comment made in this game that applied to the Texans.. so I dont really think it belongs in this thread. but whatever.. ill post about it again when the game is over.

Grid. Almost everyone on this board would agree that Dom knows defense. The problem is that he is our head coach and not our defensive cordinator. IMHO Dom isn't a good head coach.

The Pittsburgh defense was called "Blitzburgh" back in the mid-1990s when Capers and LeBeau were there with Kevin Greene, Jason Gildon, Levon Kirkland, Greg Lloyd, and Chad Brown.

That, and the Steeler's/Labeau call a much more aggresive game than we have called this past season. Now is that due to personnal; I don't think it should, but maybe it is.

Capers should sue on grounds of plagiarism.

I honestly think it has to do with personel. We have the secondary but not the front 7. You have to be able to trust your front 7 to put pressure on the QB when you overload on a blitz.. if you rush 6 guys and cant trust them to put pressure on the QB.. then you will simply allow them to make a huge play on you. WHen we have a stronger front 7 I think we will see a more aggressive defense.

I think before we start making up names for our defense like "Blitzton", we better start blitzing first.

Anyways, I agree not blitzing might have to do with our personal. We got one side of the OLB fixed with Babin blitzing, I think Wong would do better at ILB than OLB and let Peek the freak go wild at OLB on the other side. But maybe our main problem is no rush up the middle with our front line. Payne and Walker our just taking up space on the feild and if it wasn't for Smith, our DL might have been the laughing staulk of the league.

I watched Payne alot this season and as the games went on i think he got a lot better. I was starting to like him and i think he had a pretty decent season coming off an injury. LE where walker was playing has just been horrible this season. We had basically no pressure or any presence coming from Walker. Robaire did his thing however and held his own, but NT and LE should be a major priority this offseason especially if Payne does not come back. I dont think Deloach is this answer at that position and neither is Walker at his.

I agree with Texas Heat the talent that the steelers have on defense is incredible. Their entire d line has been to the pro bowl as well as two of their linebackers and Palomalu is going this year. If we had that kind of talent, I'm not ripping our team, but we could be in the play offs this year too.

i think our D will improve by next season, we have a lot of young talent in there and they didnt look to shabby at the end of the season !

The problem is that even though Dom created that Defense, he doesnt use the exact same one in houston. He relies more on dropping into coverage and causing turnovers instead of rushing 6 or 7 and getting sacks. Its hard to compare when they are different. Now this team could have blitzed this season if they would have let Peek and Babin blitz with maybe a blitz from a ILB and the Dline doing something. There was enough talent, maybe not the best Dline but when you blitz three LBs they cant stop them all. Then you throw in Dunta and you got another threat. They could be aggressive but they choose not to be.

Well I think you are mistaken that he relies more on dropping into coverage and causing turnovers.

The problem is that we cannot be sure that if we rush 6 or 7.. we will hurry the QB.. our front 7 is not good enough or consistent enough to garuntee that. So, if we rush 6 or 7 and dont hurry the QB.. you end up getting burnt.

there WASNT enough talent.. our Dline is not doing what a 3-4 Dline needs to do.. they are not tieing up blockers and freeing up our OLBs. Dom's objective is to give pressure with a 4 man rush, and allow the rest of our defense to play coverage. That way, when we rush 7.. we can expect either a hurry, or a sack.

SO.. you cant really say that Dom's defense isnt working or that he runs it different.. when he doesnt have the personel that the steelers have.

Obviously the dline didnt have the talent it should, but the LBs did have talent that wasnt used. how often did they blitz a third LB? not many but when they did there was pressure. How many times did Dunta blitz? probably 8 times and he got three sacks and others were hurries. They had more talent than people act like they had. Maybe it was a lack of trust, but i noticed that when ONE extra guy was sent there was a lot of pressure. Rushing 4 will hardly ever get pressure against a good offense blocking with 6.

And The coaches have repeatedly said that even though the sacks werent high this year, the INTs and turnovers were, and that is what the defense was going for. Also, if our DBs are as good as many believe, they can cover for 3 secs, which would allow for 1 out of 7 to get some pressure on the QB.

I know that they were going for the turnovers. I personally like that.. but that isnt the reason we didnt have a pass rush. you can generate a pass rush with 4 guys.. if they are talented. It wont be a consistent or dominating pass rush.. but it will be good enough to work with our scheme. Then when we REALLY want to rush the passer, we will have a good chance of getting to him.

Anywho.. Yah when we sent an extra LB we could generate more of a rush.. heck.. if we sent all 11 of em we could generate a great pass rush.. but you gotta have people in coverage. And you gotta mix it up.. keep running the same plays and the offense will figure it out and tear you apart. So.. we rushed 3 LBs when we could.. and we rushed Dunta when we could.. but if we had done it too much.. it would have hurt us instead of helped us.

I just think we need to give it more time. Lets get our front 7 fixed up and see where we are.

The more I look at it now it seems that our defense is slowly being brought along. Every year we seem to bring in a few more plays. Like we rarely saw CB blitz in previous seasons and I havn't seem much of the classic crossover ILB switch where both ILB's blitz the middle but cross each other to create confusion. I saw the Chargers to the weakside switch in the playoffs, but I don't recall too many times the Texans doing it. That was a staple of the blitzburgh defense. I'd like to add too that Coleman's role is beginning to look like Carnell Lakes role in the mid-90's He was called on to to do so many things in the secondary. And Dunta's role as a CB and Nickleback reminds me of the switching Rod Woodson would do. As the seasons are piling up it seems that we are adding more and more aggressiveness. We still havn't utilized the whole scheme but we are using more and more each year. Maybe this next year we will unload. it was tough to do with so many people at positions that were not there the year before.
