Bullpen: No more middle fingers

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone on here does it. But if you're a Bullpen member, please stop flipping off kicks. It gives us a bad rep IMHO, and further, the Texans have sent this:

We appreciate your support of the team. We truly benefit from the Home Field Advantage. And while we encourage tradition, it has come to our attention that some crude gestures are being displayed when the opposing team is kicking a field goal and PAT. In addition, we have heard numerous complaints about profanity throughout the game. This can be offensive to other fans and it does not show our great Texans hospitality.

This is just a reminder that this behavior violates the fan code of conduct and could lead to eviction from the stadium and potential revoking of your tickets.

Although we encourage you to have a good time, please remember that this is a family atmosphere. Should you witness any of this behavior please report it to the Gameday Service Hotline at 832-667-1400.

If you would like to show your disgust at the other team's field goal or PAT, join us by turning around (and yes, we all cheat and watch it on the jumbo tron).

I just checked my email I got it too. I guess it is to all Bullpen folks. I made a suggestion as well. I'm not sure if anyone has been to bullpen pub but they do have some decent beers there. One of the only places I've seen the big bottled shiner's. Only problem I'd had with it is I don't carry cash. I requested they put in a credit/debit card machine.

Sucks there are people out there who don't understand that not all things are good to do in public. I would rather the stadium be a place families can go to.

In terms of the bird... I can understand that. No need for that at a FG or PAT. Anyone see the pictures from the Browns vs Bengals game after Johnson jumped into the crowd? There's like 5 or 6 fans in the Dawg pound flipping him off! It's awesome

Maybe they know I am too nice to do that.

I fought this battle a couple years ago and lost. I really can't believe there are people out there that think it is a "cool" thing to do. At first I was mad, because I didn't want my children picking up bad habits but I finally have taught them that this is a classic example of why to stay in school.

I hope the Texans really do something about it, for the younger kids sake.

I understand the Texans take on it, but can you imagine if Al Davis sent that to the Black Hole or whomever runs the Eagles to send that to thier fans....Now I am sure they would get emails back with photo's of them flipping them off....

Yea I agree with the bird thing! When I was Bullpen season ticket holder I thought it was childish and was surprised at who was doing it.
Then one day I was at home watching and I could see it on tv, mainly cause they show the Bullpen alot and I thought man we look like white trash low life scum doing that! Not even the Black Hole or Dawg Pound stoops that low!

Did not know you can see it on tv...wow. As for the people in Oakland and Philly, I should have stated that I do not know if they do that, but to be told that, I am sure those fans would send a nice return email...As much as I dislike the Eagles and thier fans, I have to admit, they are quite possibly the most passionate fans there are.

I would imagine the conplaints aren't the occassional "oh sh1t!" but rather people who sound like George Carlin the entire game.

Is it because you can see the jorts too?

This is the 2nd time the Bullpen has been warned about middle fingers/gestures. The first notice I believe was during the 2004 season.

It is not hard for them to figure out who did it and warn them if they continue that there tickets will be revoked and given to me.

I'm glad they FINALLY sent out another notice, though I doubt it will do any good until they send out personal warnings, and follow up on them. They can target who is doing it, very easy to do. Even if PSL owners sell their tickets, it should be their responsibility to warn the purchaser to NOT participate in "shooting the bird."

I've never liked the gesture, and hope the TEXANS are tough enough to get it stopped. It will take throwing some diehards out of the Bullpen, but, if that is what it takes then bring it on!!

Me, personally, I think turning your back to the field goal/pat should be changed. I've never liked it and still dont understand it.
If the game is on the line, or a tight game, I would rather cause a distraction by waving my arms or moving around. But turning our backs to the kicker seems just kinda...strange.

I guess I'm in the minority on this one. I don't have a problem with the Bull Pen flipping off the other teams kickers at all. Granted I would prefer everybody did it in unison so it would have a more dramatic effect, instead of in a hodge podge manner they do it in now but you can only expect so much outta the bullpen folks.

The people in the stands at football games should be rowdy, mean, obnoxious fanatics. It should not be a place for children. In fact, professional sports in general are not for children. (Well maybe professional wrestling.) The fans I respect are in places like Philadelphia and Cleveland. The original Dowg Pound comes to mind. Not that watered down version you see Cleveland now. Anyone who will boo Santa Clause is my kinda fanatic. I'm talking about the battery throwing, bastards of the 1980s.

Frankly, the worst thing you can do to a sport is try to homogenize it to the point were everybody can watch them, because once you do that, nobody will want to watch it. Hockey is a prime example of this concept at work. With hockey, the more fights the better.

An example of a sport that isn’t trying to homogenize itself into oblivion is mixed martial arts and it’s booming. Why? Because people want to get rowdy, they want to scream and yell, they want blood. It’s no place for kids.

I don't want to see your kids, hear your kids, or get up 15 times so you can pass by and to take them to the bathroom. KEEP YOUR KIDS AT HOME.

I know others will disagree but I am inclined to agree with you. It's sad to see the corporate direction football is going. Pretty soon they won't want anyone standing up during games because it distracts the poor ***** sitting down munching on his hot dog and drinking his beer. God forbid we get in the way of the real fans...

Did you ever go to a game with your father?


I don't have newborns at the game or children in diaphers. I couldn't take the aggrevation of the attention they would need.

I take my (then 8 and 11 and now 13 and 16 year olds because I am sharing what I find to be one of the best sports on earth. They see me yell and scream when our defense is on the field and I taught them not to yell when our offense is on the field (which is far more than some fans know).

I am harvesting great Texans fans. Kids are our future. If you don't teach kids about the sport and share it with them, they will let it pass them by. The future then becomes filled with less football fanatics and we can't have that.

If you don't want to see my kids at the game, STAY HOME!

If you stayed standing, you wouldn't have to get up once.

I would like to take my kid to a game once he gets a little older. That being said some of the older stadiums have put in "family" sections, which I think is a very good idea. The one that comes to mind was 3 rivers in Pittsburgh, just because my wife has told me about getting kicked out of the family section when she was younger.

I'll take my kid to the game when he's got the ability to focus on the game. I do not leave my seat except for the halftime soft drink run, and I'm straight back to it for the 2nd half kickoff. So he will need to have the same attitude for me to fork out the dough and stick with me.

That being said, we've been to Astros games, and there were a few 'adult words' thrown around. He knows that they are wrong, and sometimes people just have a fit of unsocial attitude at sporting events. So I've taught him well to avoid copying that behavior and language.

I'm sure they are tracking those who are doing it, and will probably contact them directly regarding the issue...

Surprisingly enough, no I never went to any sporting events with my dad. Dad loved football just like I do, but weekends were for hunting and fishing. Fact is, I took my dad to his first game when I became a PSL holder. Dad liked it well enough but has turned down several ticket offers because it conflicts with his outdoor fun.

It may sound funny but I had never eaten beefsteak until I was in college at SFA. I grew up on a diet of wild hog, venison, flounder, trout, shrimp and red fish. All of which we either killed or caught.

As far as getting up all the time, I have a family of 5 who sits down from me and they are constantly getting up for some stupid reason. It gets old real quick. I'm not in the Bull Pen so everybody gripes when I stay standing. I usually stand up for 1st down, 3rd down, big plays, blown plays, kick offs and kick/punt returns. What can I say, I do a bunch of squat thrusts on Sunday!

I brought my 7 month old daughter to the Cowboys game and I am planning on bringing her to others during the season. I am considerate of those around me though...if she gets upset and starts crying, we go down onto the concourse. I don't want to ruin the experience for everyone else.

BTW - She loved her first game...and she already hates the Cowboys!

I'm sorry...but I'm not going to stay home just b/c I have a young child.

LOL, I think Ted meant having to care for your own infant would annoy him because it detracts from your own viewing pleasure. But more power to ya'!

I went to a texans game with my dad. I was in my 20's though......

I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand, I think Hagar's points are very sound. And I don't really understand why young children attend games, because they frankly just don't have the attention span for it. They distract their parents and everyone else because it's hard for them to sit still for 3 hours. And if the kid has to wear earplugs.....c'mon forget it.

And it's not like the rough language I randomly heard from adults in unfamiliar settings scarred me for life or anything.

Did I have a point on the other side? Apparently not.....

Kids behavior at games are what the PARENTS allow it to be. I have taught my grandkids the fundamentals and expect them to learn more and more as they get older. The only games my grandkids went to before they turned 6 was preseason games. I started playing football trevia with them when the Texan franchise was born, and I can't tell you how much fun that has been. Driving down the road, sitting around on a Sat night, whenever, I have had a great time teaching them about the NFL. The more they understand the game, the more apt they are to watch and enjoy the excitement created by players they have been taught to watch. They soon learned that the one thing they don't mess with, is MawMaw's football. They also know, ABOVE ALL, if they whine, misbehave, or become disrespectful in any way, they don't get to go back for a very long time. My biggest problem now is the fight over who gets to sit on the front row. That distinction goes to Shadow, but, as the little ones get older they want to be where the action is. They LOVE watching the game, yelling for our team, and being part of the excitement. I feel I can proudly say they are becoming great TEXAN fans.

As for the bad language, that is just down right funny! Kids hear worst things at school than they hear at a football game. I've been going to football games for over 50 years, and I can assure you, a boring game is one where you DON'T hear a few cuss words. It's part of football tradition! Where fans error is when they think they can't have a good time unless they are three sheets in the wind. When you start fighting over who gets to the beer vendor first, you've got a real problem. JMO!!

Actually I wan't meaning for that to sound contrary to TedC at all...actually I was trying to add to his point on bringing children. I didn't do a very good job of that.

I don't care if my daughter is too young to 'comprehend' what is going on...or whether or not of she distracts me. That's really not the point. If taking her to the game is the only way I get to go to the game...then she's coming with me. I hope that by my bringing her to the game will help her develop a life long interest in the game of football, even though she has no clue as to what is going on right now.

As I said before, I am very concious of the other fans around me. If my daughter starts to cry...we move to the concourse. Is that a distraction to me? Well yes...a momentary distraction...but at least I am at the game. It certainly beats being at home.
