I think I heard that Schaub gave the OL the game ball. Are they just playing better because they actually give a crap about the QB they're protecting? I don't know but it's amazing to compare sack totals to what they were vs. what they are now.

Salaam and Winston have been a huge surprise. If we had Spencer we could probably say we have a top 10 OL.
 
Someone here said the biggest upgrade to the OL this offseason was the release of the self sacking QB.

I bet David Carr thinks we cloned the Colts O-line. This unit has looked pretty dang good against 2 teams that were outstanding last year. We've done a lot of dogging and hating on the O-line the last several years, so I think we should all give 'em some props for a job well done the last 2 weeks. Absolutely amazing what 2 yrs in the same system and a QB that ca actually play at this level does for a team!!!

Yes, they are looking good. But Salaam is still not satisfying me, and I think it is more a credit to better use of Vonta and Green (and Schaub) than it is the condition of a good o-line. I would rather say it is amazing what a running back like Green can do for an o-line. However, I do not want to sound like a Schaub-hater. He is playing much better than I thought he would, and he is definitely making the line look better.

It is amazing what you can do when you improve on every position to make one or two look better.
 
Bump - kudos to the O-line. Y'all were tagged numerous times in previous seasons, but good to get the praise when beautiful things happen.

I did like that YKW was wearing gloves on the sideline to have a better grip on the gatorade.
 
As much as I want to say that Matt is THE reason the OL looks so good, he's not the only one. Ahman Green is absolutely STOUT in pass-protect. This is why Favre loved him so much and hated to see him go. A great runner who is also great at picking up blitzes is a most prized commodity.

Leach's blocking prowess is also well-known.

But I think the whole team is playing with confidence because they know they FINALLY have a QB who knows how to read plays quickly and make decisive throws. It had to be frustrating for the players to know that even if they blocked well or ran solid routes that it wouldn't matter because the inept QB is going to quit on the play anyway. That doesn't happen anymore, and now everyone is playing like a hero.
 
Football is a team sport. I never blaimed all the sacks on Carr or the O-line. If the RB, FB, or WRs don't do their part and miss assignments it makes the entire unit look bad. We never know the called plays. We see the sack and say a lineman let someone through, but that person may have supossed to have been picked up by a RB. Anyway props to the O-line, the RBs, the FBs et all. As a team they have only given up 2 sacks.

Yep, it's looking more and more like Carr was the biggest guilty party in all those sacks he took.
And kudos to the Oline yesterday for holding a first-rate Dline front to zippo sacks and to MS who unlike DC also did his part.
 
Anyone here Jaworski this morning? Mike and Mike said they were shocked that the Texans had given up only 2 sacks in 2 weeks, and asked what the difference was.

Jaws said all the credit should go to Schaub, who he described as having some of the best pocket presence in the entire NFL
 
Reading defenses, pre-snap adjustments, pocket presence, and a quick release are all tools that help make a line better. We never had a starting QB that could perform these basic duties of the position, and what a turnaround it is to see a competent signal caller back there.

I was called a fool during the off-season for saying Schaub would make our line better. :hmmm:

Reading defenses and pre snap adjustments coupled with a quick release and good pocket presence are one thing, and they should not be overlooked.

But equally important I think is the value of team leadership. Schaub brings a winners attitude, the confidence and security of a strong QB, and most importantly, makes his guys want to play to win.

People will dog Vince Young's horrible throwing motion and his lack of options, but they demolished the Jags and almost beat the Colts. I dont think Vince Young's playing ability is whats motivating that team, I think its his leadership ability. And Matt Schaub has just as much, if not more, leadership ability than Young. Those OL came out looking like they had a chip on their shoulder. I've never seen such good pass protection against such a good defensive line.

I was also told on several occasions that "leadership" is way overrated.

In addition, I also didn't see the tackle run free when Pitts doubled the end, or Salaam leave the outside rusher free while he turned inside and blocked no one, other recurring problems in the past.

That is what I liked about the o-line play - they made themselves look good. They didn't rely too much on Schaub dodging rushers with "pocket presence" to succeed. I much prefer a line that plays well before adding in the other factors. I think that tongue lashing they got from Kubiak last week got their attention.

The next step is equally large: consistency.
