McNair confirms

Errant Hothy

Hypermediocrity
...that the team was only thinking franchise QB with the 1st pick back in the 02 draft.

Peppers not considered
Owner Bob McNair said the Texans never considered choosing Julius Peppers with the No. 1 pick in the 2002 draft. He said the Texans were only looking at franchise quarterbacks, settling on David Carr.

"We didn't look seriously at (Peppers) because we knew we needed a franchise quarterback," McNair said. "And the question was, were there any out there? And there weren't any out there available other than through the draft. ... We really didn't consider Julius Peppers. And I'll say this, Carolina got a lot of criticism for drafting Julius that high because he had been a basketball player that hadn't played football very long."

I'm not sold that Peppers was a bigger risk then a college QB with 1 good year under his belt. I also hope that McNair will not influence the direction of the draft ever again.

And lastly this is what drafting purly for need will get you.

I don't understand what he was refering to when he states that Peppers hadn't been playing football very long? I guess some thought he was a gamble b/c he didnt' play in middle school? LOL.

He was recruited to play basketball at UNC, I think he was then "recruited" to play football once he was on campus...I think.

McNair was looking for the poster boy of his shiny, new franchise. I think marketing the team had as much to do with his decision as football operations, simply because it was a stupid football decision to start a rookie QB behind a completely untested offensive line.

Carr has the GQ look and was good for posters, commercials, and 3D cups.

Drafting defense - while smart - is not pretty. He was a noob owner, so I don't hold it against him, though. But I do agree with the above sentiment that I hope he's not too involved with future draft picks.

He played RB and DL in high school. Was a pretty impressive RB in high school. He did go to UNC to play basketball but played 3 healthy seasons of football.......and was considered the DE of the ACC. Considering the fact that many of today's athletes don't play four years due to leaving early or injury I just didn't get how what he said made sense.

I dunno, but now that McNair is talking about Drafts historically speaking, maybe he's now prepared to offer more disclosure & candor about what all went into the decision making process about their #1 pick in the 2006 Draft ?
We've all heard different rumors and theorys, but hearing the facts from the "horses mouth" would be nice for the sake of finally getting the story straight.
BTW, I won't be holding my breath until he makes that accommodation.

Peppers came out as a 3 year junior who had never played spring football. There were questions regarding both his experience and his consistency. Not his athletic ability. Sound familiar?

Hoth-Boy, McNair wasn't suggesting that he directed Casserly and Capers to select a QB. That was direction they chose. And remember, Capers was dead set on installing a 3-4 defense, and Peppers wasn't a "good fit".

Carr, Peppers, McKinnie and Harrington were the only players considered as possible #1 selections by the draft experts. Two of the better players out of that '02 draft, Freeney & Levi Jones, were labeled reaches by the draftniks. I thought Mel Kiper was going to pull out his mountain of hair when the Bengals took Jones over Phillip Buchanon. Goes to show that everyone makes mistakes.

I still think the Texans probably made the right pick in 2002 with their #1. Now what they did with the pick, how they developed it afterwards is a whole
other story.
But back to Peppers. Anybody remember how good he was in basketball, and if he was talented enough was there any concerns about him considering that sport at the pro level instead of football ?

if you never watched football and turned on a UNC basketball game...you would say to yourself....that kid needs to be on the football field. He was a good college b-ball player but his skills were more suited for football at the next level.

Had the Texans not taken Carr at #1 the Panthers would have taken him at #2. Now they have both players. I believe Carr was their highest rated player that year.

I feel the same way I did back in '02. I still wish they could have traded that #1 pick for additional picks..... Whether or not we drafted DC or Peppers.

My gosh, if McNair is going to admit this, he should admit something other thing regarding some other decisions.

Hopefully he has learned from this situation. And if he hasn't, hopefully he will just sign the checks.

The stuff coming out of Carr's and McNair's mouth is just amazing this week.

Clueless....

I do believe this has been discussed to no end on numerous occassions and the whole front office has given the same story, Mario Williams was the top defensive guy on their draft board, plain and simple. They interviewed Bush and they didnt like the pick. Casserly said they NEVER considered vince young, they were not looking for a QB. Will we never let this thing go away?

We have Mario now, we can't undo it, he's playing like an NFL caliber lineman, so what on earth does it really matter at this point? ok, so what if the real reason was Bush wanted too much money, would we feel better? worse? what if , what if , what if.........who cares

Ok now for last year, once again they picked the best defensive prospect on their board. I am so glad we started drafting best pick, rather than need. once you get a talented core , then you can start drafting need, wich we will probably do in the next draft I imagine. I don't know, I think with the exception of Babin they have picked some pretty darn good first rounders. As allready stated, Carr was the exception and he was a franchise face pick. Personally I think the Bosselli pick was the worst of our history.

i dont see where it says mcnair influenced any decision. he just stated what direction the team wanted to go. he said nothing about who made that decision.

Make no doubt about it, McNair made that decision for his marketing campaign as he has made several BUSINESS decision that were very good for his wallet.

1. PSL's keep people paying season tickets longer then they would have had they not plunked down a ton of money upfront. Ask yourself "Would you still be a season ticket holder after the 2-14 season had it not been for the PSL money." I would, but I know a lot of people who wouldn’t'.

2. Battle Red Day pushes folks to buy red merchandise and now its expanded to blue and red merchandise as well.

According to Forbes, the Texans are the third most valuable franchise with the 5th highest Net Operating Income. Mr. McNair is a very savvy business man and a good owner. He'll make a winner out of the Texans because its good business. Look at the top 10 franchise values and you'll see most are winners.

This is 2004 data, and I believe the Cowboys have overtaken the Redskins in that regard. However, I think the spirit of what you say is probably still true. Good find! Rep your way!!!

I believe he has answered these questions himself many times.

if it was all about buisness he would of drafted bush. mcnair spent a ton of money to get us a franchise and the only circumstantial evidence ive heard that he is not totally commited to winning is from right here. ill keep my faith in the man untill im proven wrong.
