Grading the Chiefs Game

maddogmrb

Rookie
Outstanding start to the season:

WR - Grade=B+. AJ looks great, Jacoby found the regular season to be tuffer than the pre-season.

TE - Grade=B. Kinda quiet but, Daniels did make a good catch in the 4th..

Oline - Grade=B-. Some break downs, average run blocking, overall good game.

QB - Grade = B+. Missed some passes, made some passes. Missed some reads, made some reads. Nothing to complain about and plenty to be optimistic about.

RB - Grade=B-. Green looks good. Dayne looks just okay ... I don't understand the staff's love affair with Dayne but, he made some good runs and then he didn't make some. Just doesn't look like we have a bona fide 100 yard/game runner. But we are at least adequate or better.

DLine - Grade=B. Mario probably had his best game. ND Kalu playing Super Man on his sack & Travis Johnson playing Andre Johnson on his int! Some of you will complain that my grade is too low for this game but, the Chiefs oline is in dissarray and, while we are making progress, this unit can still step it up a couple more notches. Amobi was quiet and, when I focused on him, was generally being handled fairly easily by the oline. I don't think he is ready to be a starter in this league.

MLB - Grade=B. Solid not great.

OLB - Grade=C+. Solid overall.

CB - Grade=B. Solid, not great.

S - Grade=C+. Improved. Brown made some plays as did Simmons b4 he was hurt. Hutchins looked solid. Hope Boulware is an improvement.

ST - Grade=C+. Our return game was not good and we could never tackle their return man with our 1st wave of defenders.

Coaching - Grade=A. Good job overall.

Excellent victory to open the season but, the Chiefs appear to be sliding at this time and so I'm going to temper my enthusiasm. Our next 2 oponents looked pretty good this week and, if we can manage to get 1 victory out of the next 2 games, that will be a big positive. Looking at the rest of our schedule, I'm saying we will be a 7-9 or 8-8 team which is improved over last year and a step towards the playoffs for next year.

Okay that's my take on it, what's yours?

Nice Grading, Great game,Can't wait untill next week :fans:

I like your grade, but would give the d-backs a much better grade. Their hard hitting caused turnovers and kept KC from ever really moving forward. I thought the D-line was impressive keeping LJ's stats down. That was the one thing I was reall worried about. I thought Dayne was better than okay. The penalties are what cost us the most. I hope we can work that out befoer the next game. Overall, the team had me a little nervous at first but played real hard for four quarters.

Texans had a good game.

BUT, I was a little dissapointed with some things.

Nothing that can't be worked on, but overall we played a solid game.

Coaching - Grade=A.

I agree with everything accept this one....I didn't like some of the play calling early on, especially on 3rd down when we'd throw those weak 3 yard patterns...overall I'd give them a B +

What did you not like?

The offense wasn't as sharp as I'd have liked them to be...

But...it was the first regular season game and we ae just going to continue to grow in that area...

I thought Schaub made a terrible mistake in the red zone throwing that pick, and I think he ran into a sack....He did a great job holding on to the ball though each time he was hit....

I liked how the recievers performed....I think we gave up a little too much pressure up the middle....

My main gripes are with the offense, but this being Matt's first official start and all the new pieces we have, it was almost expected...

It wasn't a terrible game, but like I said we still have a lot of work to do...

Man it started out ugly, but we got the win. Hopefully we don't see too many turnovers from MS or AJ in the future.

I think folks are grading our special teams TOO low. No we didn't have any huge returns, but that's not all that special teams is about.

We were perfect on field goals. Caused a big turnover. Matt Turk punted really well. We gave up that one semi-big return, but for the most part their return yards were limited.

We were very solid on special teams today. You gotta atleast give them a B.

WR - Grade=B+. I thought we looked good. We had that fumble that I'm not happy about and I'm wondering about the miscommunication between Schaub and AJ on the TD. Some other guys need to step up more. But overall, a very good job.

TE - Grade=C. An OK job.

Oline - Grade=C+. We had some issues that we need to fix. Pitts made some mistakes, McKinney got schooled a couple of times, and Salaam made a mental mistake or two as well. We have to play better than this against stronger competition.

QB - Grade = B-. I expect Schaub to play better than this. This is only his third start and he's got some growing into the position to do.

RB - Grade=B. Green showed flashes but padded his stats at the end of the 1st half. We were able to pound the hell out of the ball to kill the clock at the end, though. That was sweet.

DLine - Grade=B. I'd still like more pressure out of these guys but in the second half, they looked like a different d-line. Hopefully, that d-line will show up for complete games in the future.

MLB - Grade=B. Demeco being Demeco.

OLB - Grade=B-. Morlon and Danny both made some good plays.

CB - Grade=B. Solid, not great.

S - Grade=B. The safeties were hitting and knocking balls loose. That was nice to see. I'm worried about our depth at safety with Jason gone.

ST - Grade=B. While our returns weren't great, Turk got us some good field position. Kris made his shots. Demeco forced the fumble on that punt return and Charlie recovered it. Beauty.

Coaching - Grade=A. Good job overall. The team was ready to play and when bad things happened, they didn't snowball. That was great to see. It was a great game to watch.

I'm feeling good about this year but let's see how we play in Carolina next week.

I agree with you here. I liked the special teams today.

I have to give big props to the D-Line. Travis Johnson came through as did Mario Williams. It looks like these last two first round selections (before Okoye) might pay off more than most people thought. That interception is probably the best play Travis Johnson has made as a pro to date and coming on the first game is a really good thing. He was in a battle all training camp and to have a first game like that is really uplifting. Mario played well and was pressuring the QB in some way on alot of the Chiefs passing downs. The sacks might not have been textbook sacks but from what I saw he was rewarded for how well he was pressuring the QB throughout the day. I thought his consistancy throughout the whole day was much improved from last season.

The passing attack looked pretty strong. My only gripe was Walter didn't make many plays...although I was not paying attention to his blocking very much. He looked like he was open really only on one play down the middle of the field but the DB for the Chiefs made a nice play on the ball.

These are my grades:

Overall: B+
Passing Attack: B+
Rushing Attack: B- (was not overally impressed by Ron Dayne; I wish one of the younger guys could have played a little in relief.)
Offense: B
Rushing Defense: B+
Passing Defense: B+
Defense: A- (Created alot of turnovers and really took advantage of the weaknesses in the Chiefs offense.
Special Teams: B

I thought Schaub made a terrible mistake in the red zone throwing that pick...
The throw wasn't great, but Schaub made the correct decision. If your Pro Bowl WR is in the endzone with single coverage...give him a chance to make a play.

Despite getting pressure, Schaub hung in the pocket and made good reads and throws. I'm very satisfied with his performance and I'd give him the offensive game ball.

The terrible decision being not compensating enough on effort for throwing on the run to his left? Cause otherwise I am with Lucky--place that ball two feet higher and it looks like the Jacoby Jones pre-season TD in Dallas.

I agree with you guys in principle, but Matt underthrew his receiver when Andre had the back position. It looked like a bad decision from the Bull Pen. Other than that, I was pleased with Schaub today. For the claim earlier that he "ran into" a sack..McKinney got badly beat and pushed his man into MS AFTER the pocket had broken down.

Bottom line - The Texans didn't look "spectacular", but looked good winning a game (finally) that they "should" have won. After so many games that looked good till the last few minutes (under Capers), it was refreshing to see the Texans look like a team that knew how to finish!

Not bad. I didn't think Dayne did that badly and showed me a little speed on that misdirection play when the offense went right and he ran left. Loved Turks punts. Everytime the returner was backing up ten yards but the gunners tended to overrun the play. Clark looked awful in the last preseason game but I really liked his hits this game. Mario was much improved, Demeco was great, and I thought Kalu was launched off a springboard on that sack. KC was a game we should have won and did and I think we needed a somewhat lesser opponent to let this team gel somewhat and build it's confidence. Carolina will be a big test and a win against them will really make a statement about the maturity of this team.

Time of possession was huge for us starting late in the third. The drive of 15 plays and 10:26 that ended with a FG was an absolute killer. THAT is how you put a team away.

Yes, Texan fans, you read correctly. The Texans had a 10:26 drive... how often has that happened, and how recently?

The terrible decision being not compensating enough on effort for throwing on the run to his left? Cause otherwise I am with Lucky--place that ball two feet higher and it looks like the Jacoby Jones pre-season TD in Dallas.

Didnt get enouph air under it, and defininetely didnt throw it hard enouph, gave the DB just enouph time to make a play on it.

I was pretty disapointed with our running game through the 1st three quarters. The only real big plays we had were in garbage time (3rd and a mile or at the end of the half)

In the 4th though, we turned it around. A 70something yard drive taking over 10 minutes? Brilliant! A+

We handled the chiefs, and for that, everyone deserves at least a B or better. Awesome game

overall we played ok most good teams would have beat us today for the simple fact we could not score.

we had over 300 yards but only managed 13 points. but it is the first game so that can be improved.

defense played great. sacks, picks, fumbles, everything the defense hasnt done the last 2 years.

i think next 2 weeks will tell us if was as much our defense or was it the chiefs (which it was to an extent).

happy overall, but holding out for excited.

Maybe it's the homer in me, but this is how I saw it:

WR - Grade=B

TE - Grade=B

Oline - Grade=B-

QB - Grade = B

RB - Grade=B+

DLine - Grade=A+. Multiple sacks, shut down LJ (I don't care if he's not 100"%, it's still LJ), and even got an int.

MLB - Grade=B+.

OLB - Grade=B-.

CB - Grade=A-.

S - Grade=B. Von Hutchins is starting to make me happy.

ST - Grade=B+

Coaching - Grade=B+. Good job overall.

I agree with you about throwing it up to your reciever.

Nevertheless it was a terrible mistake. When you are that close to the goal line about to put points on the board it isn't neccessary to try and make that kind of throw. And if you are going to make that throw he needed to have better placement...He needs to put it in a place where if A.J isn't catching it, no one is...Put it somewhere we he would have to make a spectacular catch to come down with it...Not where it will be a jump ball.........Kind of like the throw in pre-season to Jacoby...If Jacoby wasn't catching that ball, no one was...Jacoby made a great leaping catch...

Regardless of who he is throwing the ball to, throwing a pick that close to the goal line is a terrible mistake...

Yes Schaub was light years ahead of our previous QB, but his game wasn't stellar...I'm very impressed that he has things clicking well early, and IMHO, I think the guy is going to atleast be a top 5 QB in this leauge...BUT he did do some things wrong....We scored one offensive TD....That's not good enough....The offense doesn't need to get comfortable at all with this performance....They didn't play what I'd consider to be a very good game...They played well...well enough to beat a bad Kansas City team...

It's encouraging that we are talented enough to beat teams like KC even when we make mistakes like those though.

Ummmmm....

If you guys are o.k with a QB that throws a pick that close to the goal line at any time, in any situation under any circumstances then I'd say your standards are pretty low...

And please don't put words in my mouth...I didn't say terrible "decision"...I said terrible MISTAKE....

I am o.k with throwing the ball up to playmakers and letting them show why they are better than the guy covering them, but throwing a pick that close to the goal line in that situation was a terrible mistake....

This game could have been a blowout in the Texans favor save a few mistakes we made on offense...K.C wasn't that good...

We make those "mistakes" next week and things may not end up so rosy...

Very happy with the win, but I want a great team...not a mediocre Tom Coughlins Giants type team....

For the record, Matt Schaub categorized that interception as a bad "decision" with his own two lips.

OK, Schaub made a mistake. A mistake in execution (in the words of Dom Capers). But if Andre Johnson is in man coverage in the endzone (especially locked up with a noob safety), I want Matt to throw it up. It's a bad decision not to give your playmakers a chance to make a play.

In retrospect, that poor throw didn't effect Schaub one bit. He went back to Johnson on the deep crossing route and he continually threw to tight spots in the middle of the field. Keep up the good work, Matt.

It's a bad decision not to give your playmakers a chance to make a play.

That's not neccesarily true.

You have to weigh your choices.

If I'm a right handed QB rolling to my left, not too far away from my endzone a better decision might have been to just get what yards he could have gotten and lived to fight another day...Either that, or don't throw on the run...If no one is immediately behind you stop and step into your throw...

No it didn't come back to bite us, but a play like that at the beggining of a game can be devastating against better teams.

I like what he was thinking on that play, but he did a poor job executing. That's just a fact.

I think Dre could have covered the mistake by blasting the DB before the ball got there. I haven't rewatched it very closely; maybe his momentum prevented this. He looked fairly immobile when the catch was made though. I'd bet he breaks it up next time.

I'd like to see Schaub throw it the next time too; maybe with more air under the ball or make the mistake long instead of short. That combined with Dre doing a little better would reduce risk.

To eliminate risk as much as possible, they could have run Green up the middle. :)

they like dayne because he's a known commodity. who was it that said 2 yards and a cloud of fat?

i think you guys are grading our defense to low.....dline played outstanding....lbs were ok.....corners and safties played pretty darn good.....id give all solid b's....pushing b+......we arent top 5 defense with a c grade guys

coaching- A+
Offense- B+
Defense- B
Special Teams- B
Overall- A

How do you figure the offense was better than the defense? The way I saw it, the offense still made a few mistakes and has a lot to improve on (not questioning our performance, which was refreshing!) while our defense held a team to a field goal. Granted, it was the Chief's offense, but still...

Yeah, I don't think Schaub's decision to throw that ball is really the issue.

I look at it like this.

It was the first half and taking a big risk isn't really necessary, you want the FG. But, if you are going to throw it in that situation, put it where it's more on the incompletion side. It's not like Schaub threw into a situation he didn't read or not understand.

What I am saying is, he took a calculated risk. The issue is ball placement. I wouldn't get all worked up over that. It's a coaching discussion with him, but I wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

Also, Schaub could have ran for positive yards instead. Again, just a coaching discussion.

Considering it was the first half, he should have been a little more careful so they would at least get a FG.

My opinion, I like the play even with the INT. It really shows me that this offense is looking to score points and take pressure off the defense. In order for that to happen, you have to take risks. Sometimes you get burned taking risks, but I believe Schaub will learn from that and become a better QB and come through in a game that really counts for something BIG! Remember that Jacoby Jones catch against Dallas in the preseason? Imagine that in a big game!

Besides, Schaub made up for it with that great pass to AJ for TD. Schaub is going to make some mistakes, but his upside should definitely make him worth it in the long run.
