2007 Week One Power Rankings Discussion

Um, Raiders at #23?
And to think we beat the raiders in thier house with under 100 total yards and David Carr in charge. I am truly mystified at how these guys keep a job.

Wow, the cowpies at #4 and the first NFC team on the list......that's laughable.

And Arizona at 13, that's a little bit of a suprise.

I'm not surpised how low we're ranked, I am surprised that we're rated at 25 though figured we'd be in the 30's

Man DB! That was one depressing read!

I'm reppin anyway, because the future will be so much better when compared to the recent past!
"Late in the half, Carr had a run of three straight offensive plays when he was sacked and fumbled the ball. Carr lost the first two fumbles, including one returned 35 yards for a score by Kirk Morrison after Warren Sapp's in the final minute of the half to make it 14-7."

Schaub was 9-of-12 for 108 yards and ran 5 yards for a score as the Texans went on to beat Arizona 33-20 on Saturday in Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt's home debut.

Schaub seemed right at home in his new role as Houston's starter.

"He's got great presence in what he's doing, runs the football team extremely well," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "I would expect him to just get better and better and better. I'm very pleased with his effort today."

Arizona at #13!?!?! I don't know where to start....umm, this dude is a complete tool.
New coach/system.

Cowboys at #4!?!?! I am not a Cowboys hater but there is no way in hell that Dallas is #4. Just absurd.
New coach/system.

Bears at #10!?!?! They went to the Super Bowl 9 months ago and lost just about no one and they are #10?

and the creme crumpet......*drum roll*

Oakland at #23!?!?! Oakland has been playing bad football since Gannon retired. Should we expect that to change. BIG uncertainties at QB, and lack of talent on the OL.
oh yeah, New Coach and New System.

It seems like with this guy all you have to do is change coaches and your team is instantly morphed into a contender. It's actually quite the opposite. Anyone who watched Texans football in 2006 knows that just isn't the case. It takes time to turn things around and its nearly impossible until you resolve your QB situation.

I also like the obligatory annual overrating of Jacksonville and that he put BOTH New York teams right in the middle of the rankings. Well at least the guy is diplomatic. God forbid anyone be critical of any East Coast team.

If he wants to pick a team that could come out of nowhere you gotta go with Detroit, Houston, or Miami (with healthy Trent).

If he wants to pick a team that could have a precipitous fall it would be the Jets, Giants, Cowboys, and Ravens. I still can't get over the Cowboys at #4. They have a guy leading the team that couldn't even get down the snap on a 15yd field goal IN THE PLAYOFFS. Who in their right mind would believe in a guy like that? The unceremonious ejection of Glenn, Newman has the 'Mario' arch injury, a coach who is on roids, and the ticking time bomb that is TO. This thing aint gonna end pretty for the boys in Dallas.

It was actually worse than that, because we had -5 total passing yards.

Texans first team to win with negative yards passing in 25 years

Why anyone enables these opinions is beyond me. No way is Oakland better than the Texans! :wild:
Carr figures this is payback for what happened two weeks ago in Buffalo, when the Texans lost 24-21 despite his big game passing.
What's funny is that in that Buffalo game where he had his "big game passing", Carr was 25-30 for 223 yards and 0 touchdowns with 1 interception.

What a game.

Wow...Is it just me that actually thinks the Arizona Cardinals are a much improved team? I mean, two probowl caliber recievers in Fitzgerald and Boldin, along with an improving young QB in Leinart. Then they draft Levi Brown to protect Leinart's backside (he's left handed) and have Edge, who severely underachieved last year, but if he regains his form from Indianapolis, the Cards could be a playoff contender!

Or...does everyone think the Cards are bad? Don't fall into the same trap that...the entire world fell into thinking the Texans are the worst team in the league with the worst O-line. Remember the golden rule!

I agree with you, I think the Cardinals will be a good team this year. . . then again I thought that last year too so. . .

It seems like every preseason all the media and "expert" analysts like the Cardinals and every year they don't live up to expectations.

And everybody loves the cowboys. After watching the game against the Texans, the Boys are either a not so good team or the Texans are a lot better than anyone (other than us) think.

We actually good some good press this afternoon on Fox radio - Chris Myers. They were talking about QB's and said Matt had made our oline better, where as the previous QB liked to hold onto the ball too long.

i am fully aware that the Cardinals have improved. They have 3 quality receivers, a veteran RB and a more than capable young QB with a good mind. Their problem is on the OL and on defense and they are both pretty big problems. Couple that with a new coaching staff and new system and you see why I think 13 is WAY too high.

I was born in the Show Me State so I guess I need to see something on the field and not just on paper. FWIW, I like what the Cardinals have done in the draft over the past 5-6 years and other than the horrible owner, I like the franchise.

The Cardinals are a team loaded with undeveloped talent that is now under a new coaching staff. It reminds me of another team I'm familiar with, but I can't think of the name right now...
:fans:

It's interesting that a media source who finally seems to promote the Texans' worth is chastised for the other picks. Maybe that says something about the multitudes of stupid, biased writers derided on the boards for their underwhelming predictions for the Texans, and the people who scorn them.

What difference does any of this make? This is just another example of a tool with a typewriter who gets paid to spout off. Hey, good for him. I'd LOVE to get paid for that.

However, none of this matters. Pre-season rankings are bunk and the only rankings that matter during the season don't come from columnists, they come from the standings.

I think we'll be better than #23 when the final standings are posted.

there should be a database containing all power rankings made, with graphs to chart progress.
In a thread a while back, I pulled up their preseason rankings from last year and compared that against the actual standings by the end of the year.

They were totally different. They had teams at the bottom of the power rankings that ended up in the playoffs or contending for playoffs and teams at the top that didn't make the playoffs.

Maybe, but how long have we been hearing that? A decade...more?

Raiders in last again.

They can waste the first pick of the draft again on JaMarcus Russell.

Here's a question:

If half the teams don't repeat in the play-offs year-to-year, which of these teams do you think won't repeat this year, and who will replace them?

AFC:
Colts
Pats
Chargers
Ravens
Chiefs
Jets

NFC:
Bears
Saints
Eagles
Cowboys
Giants
Seahawks

I'll say Chargers, Chiefs, and Colts in the AFC. I'm going out on a limb with the Colts, but each team has had some major restructuring. Instead, it will be the Broncos, Bengals, and...Jags.

In the NFC it's Giants, Cowboys, and Seahawks. Instead, it will be Niners, Rams, and...Buccaneers.

www.foxsports.com have us at 25 and call for us to be a spoiler.... I question whether or not they have even seen this team as they proclaim Jordan Black as our new offensive tackle. They probably just referenced a 3x5 index card. Anyone who has seen this team in the preseason would at least mention JJ....

"With a new quarterback (Matt Schuab), a new running back (Ahman Green), a new offensive tackle (Jordan Black), and yet another first round pick on the defense (Amobi Okoye), there’s hope for an improved Texans squad this summer. At the very least, the Texans should be exciting to watch on defense. Dunta Robinson, DeMeco Ryans, Mario Williams and Okoye make up one of the most promising young defensive cores in the league. Houston beat Jacksonville twice and stole a game from the Colts last year. The AFC South will certainly be tough in ‘07, but don’t be surprised if Houston plays the role of spoiler to their division foes again. Look for Houston to make a run at .500 this season."

And the title was changed into a general discussion of power rankings. This way we can keep up with all the power rankings each week in a unified thread and leave more room for the football threads.

Also, we need a link directly to whatever page copyrighted material is quoted from. Thanks.

Wow, you think the Chargers AND the Colts will miss the playoffs? As much as I'd like to believe that, I just don't see it. At gunpoint, I'd say Chiefs, Jets, Ravens. Honestly, I think the Chargers, Colts, Pats, and Ravens all make it, but I think the Ravens have the best chance of getting knocked off. I think the Steelers will rebound this year. I think the Colts will slip a bit, but I'm not buying the major collapse some are predicting, and I don't see the Broncos knocking off the Chargers. Maybe next year. I'd put the division winners at Pats, Colts, Steelers, Chargers, and the wild card for the Broncos and Texans (let me have my moment of crazy optimism).

The Cow pies/girls are overrated. The Texans are underrated. No big deal.

Personally, I don't give a crap what the "stars on their helmuts" do this year, I don't like them anyway. The Texans are looking up, and that's all I care about.

Who cares, the only rankings that matter are the final standings (and we will be at or better than .500)!

i think redskins are way underated they have great wide outs and good depth at running back their Qb is a work in progress and their D is good i think 8-8 and atleast wildcard for them but for the rankings they should be higher, i like where the cards are placed and we should be alot higher i mean we are more solid then so many of the teams above us we are such a sleeper this yea we are gunna come out of no where!

I believe we are going to come from out of nowhere and rock some team's worlds.

But we as Texans fans KNOW where we are coming from...we're coming from the great State of Texas, and the awesome City of Houston! :wild:

And from where ever a Texans' fan lives as well (Kansas).

AFC Division Champs
Ravens
Patriots
Chargers
Colts
AFC Wild Cards
Bengals or Steelers
Texans (so I'm a homer, pffft)

NFC Division Champs
Chicago
New Orleans
Philadelphia
San Francisco
NFC Wild Cards
Seattle
St. Louis
(one of these W/Cs should realistically be the Cowboys, but I just can't make myself type that)

The Jags, Chiefs, and Panthers are all overrated on this one. Other than that I think this is the best Power Rankings that I have seen. I also respect the fact that the Colts are #1 because they are the champions and deserve to be there. I can't stand the Colts but to quote from lame wrestling schtick, 'you gotta beat the man, to be the man'.

I think the loss of Tarik Glenn alone guarantees the Colts won't repeat but until they lose, ya gotta have them at #1 imho.

Super Bowl
Chargers v. Bears (Chargers win their first Super Bowl and the Bears are the new Bills...Rex run out of town like Frankenstein)

Conference Championship Week
Chargers v. Patriots
Eagles v. Bears

Divisional Playoffs
Colts v. Chargers
Texans v. Patriots (I can homer, but the Texan's road ends here in 07)
Cowboys v. Eagles (critical Romo chokejob costs them game)
Seahawks v. Bears

Wild Card Weekend
Broncos v. Colts
Texans v. Steelers (we finally kick the damn door in)
Cowboys v. New Orleans
Packers v. Seahawks

Can't be displeased with a little positive media exposure.
Huh? IIRC, we finished 25th last year...nothing to brag about IMHO. (Kinda like saying we didn't win the ugly contest)

With an upgraded QB & backfield (not to mention an up & coming receiving corps) and MW and DR with another year under their belt(s), I'd be pissed if we didn't at least break .500.

Spin this any way you want, but 25th in the 'power rankings' is anything but a compliment. Personally, I'm offended.
