YTF has his sleep(er) pick QB Josh Johnson

so I'm going to focus on a pair of need postional players (not asleep) just quite possibly excellent picks for the Texans next April.

Option One 1st rd pick- Gosder Cherilus, OT, Boston College

excellent size & athletic ability. think Joe Staley. 6'7" 315 with lean frame to build out. just moved to the left side in BS new zone blocking scheme (from former Green Bay OC Jeff Jagodzinski). seemed pretty solid in his first start @ LT allowing Matt Ryan enough time to throw for over 400 yards & 5 TD's. keep a watch out this season for him & watch a game to see what you think.

Option Two 1st rd pick- DeJuan Tribble, CB, Boston College

I liked him last year, excellent cover corner who reads the defense. He read the defense so well this week in fact he had 3 count them 1,2,3 interceptions. 7 solo tackles, one for a loss & was named Walter Camp national defensive player of the week.

in other words watch Boston College play this season whenever possible, you all have a player to watch on both sides of the ball, not to mention whoever they go up against, have fun :specnatz:

What about the possibility of drafting a Free Safety in the 1st Round?
Who should we watch for that?

honestly I would love to see Dunta Robinson moved to FS next year assuming they drafted the top cb available in the 08 draft. its very hard to draft that high & find value plus a fit coming out of College who can start in the NFL as a FS. usually teams go after large or at least physical cornerbacks that can read defenses well, Dunta fits the latter. there is no Reggie Nelson in this years draft so I still say they would be looking @ the cb position with that projection in mind, cause you still want cover skills, playmaking & ability to read & react to defensive schemes.

but I know you want a name, someone to ponder & dream away a Saturday so here you go. mind you he would have to declare early, but I think he would be eligible since next year (three years removed from High School) but this kid is special & more complete than even Reggie Nelson.

Kenny Phillips, FS, Miami 6'2" 202 Physical big hitter and outstanding man-to-man cover defender...Ball hawk who has great range, speed, power and has a nose for the ball...Quick learner who has already developed into a team leader...Has a great understanding of defensive football to go with poise and confidence

Thanks, but I heard that he will likely go very high in the draft which would mean the Texans would either have to tank this season or trade up to get him.

you are correct sir, but he would be the benchmark as to what your looking for out of that position. FS is a projection in most cases so I guess we'll just have to wait, see how the season plays out both for the Texans & the College season then maybe after the Senior Bowl it will make more sense :)

What do you think of Simeon Castille?

And I doubt we even consider Cherlius. If I remember correctly he got a barfight and maybe even have gotten charged with assault. What do you think of Michael Oher and Barry Richardson?

Do you prefer Tribble over Talib and Cason? If so, why?

Ideally, I hope we sign Faneca. I think that'd allow us to bypass an LT in the 1st and continue to build our defense.

Rivers, Maualuga, or Laurinaitis would make us have one the best LB tandems in the league.

BL i am hoping the Charles Spencer injury pushes the FO to go Lineman first round and hopefully we can get the LT spot set.Maybe Frye starts to develop into an option there this year on PS.

Other then that i have a feeling we're looking at DB this coming year(unless Bennett looks like he's legit at taking over #2) I don't think we're going to move Dunta to FS... I just don't get why this keeps getting thrown around here.

As for mention of Faneca.....i just guess it depends what our season looks like and whether or not we'll continue to run the zone/power hybrid. If we do i'd be happy to invite him on board even with the hefty price tage he'll be looking for. Honestly i'd rather develop in house talent and have FA as hired guns.

You can't consider these guys sleep(ers). We savy draft nicks have been following Cherilus and projecting his draft status since last year. We know about him. He has even been the chique(sp) first round surprise in some mocks. However, his stock has dropped coming into the new season. Tribble I guess could be a sleeper, but he isn't that much of one.

Easy Tiger. You just threw out a lot of big names.

Michael Oher is a bubble first rounder, but likely a second rounder right now.
Richardson is a top 20 pick, and could be the best OT in the draft.
Tribble is not better than Talib or Cason.
Cason is not the top CB in the draft, but a first round talent.
I watched Talib this weekend and he was dominant. He also caught a TD on offense.
I'm not sure where I stand on signing a big name FA at this point.

FS is such a hard position to gauge. Yes, he is a ST type talent, and has close to the same hype around him. However, with Phillips, there is uncertianty about what position he will play in the NFL. He fits more of a coverage SS than he does a FS right now IMO. He has the ability to play FS in the NFL, but his game is more suited for SS at this point as with ST. He could play FS for us though. Then, we have to try and project him. He could go as early as about 5 like ST, but could also slip to around 11-14. Right now it's so early, a lot of this stuff is a toss up.

Simon Castillo has been arrested for disorderly conduct (could be a red flag that he needs anger management) tall & slender needs to add strength not super fast either I suppose he could play some FS lets see how he develops, only a Junior.

Talib is more athlete than football player, Cason plays in the Pac-10 & I'm just not a big fan of that conference when it comes to corners (although I absoultly loved SS Sabby Piscitelli Oregon State, drafted 2nd rd. by the Bucs, reminds me of a young John Lynch). Tribble is a complete football player I like him more than Leon Hall, Michigan because he is more physical & a playmaker, has been falsly accused of taking a swing (not the Cherlius) while Cherilus was carrying Maney, Doyle said, Tribble punched Maney. Tribble said in an phone interview that he did not hit anyone.

"Whoever said that is definitely in the wrong," he said. "There were a lot of us in the bar, and people know we're BC football players, so we're going to get the blame, but none of our guys hit anybody."

Cherlius is a stud http://bceagles.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/cherilus_gosder00.html

Boike, 52, a 25-year State Police veteran, said Maney caused the fracas by sucker-punching him, prompting Cherilus to come to Boike's aid.

"I can't reiterate enough that this kid did nothing wrong," Boike said of Cherilus.

Cherilus, 23, a fifth-year senior at BC and a National Football League prospect, said he did nothing more than act as a peacemaker.

"The lesson I learned is not to try to break up anymore fights," he said in a phone interview.

By all accounts, the incident began when Boike asked Maney and several companions, including Maney's brother, Brian, 23, to move from a section of a bar on the top floor of the multilevel establishment to accommodate Cherilus and his BC teammates, one of whom the Maneys identified as DeJuan Tribble, another senior cocaptain. Witnesses also seem to agree that Brian's girlfriend told Boike he was rude and that Boike said he had the right to make the request as a part-owner of the bar.

I'd like us to get one of the running backs in this draft. Ahman isn't getting any younger and aside from him, we are pretty weak at that position. This draft is loaded with backs who would be the starter for us immediately and I would hate to miss out.

Definately agree here. McFadden, Slaton or Jones in that order. If we dont get them, perhaps in the 5th or so I would take Danny Woodhead.

The RB talent is heavy at the top, but pretty barren after the first day it appears. Felix Jones is my RB pick, but we have more pressing needs than RB, especially not have a 2nd round pick this year. We need a FS and a CB, then we can look towards grooming positions, but we need players at certain positions first.

It is easier to find an adequate RB later in the draft than it is to find an adequate FS in the draft. Example: DD in the 4th was adequate, CC Brown in the 6th hasn't ever been close to adequate.

this should be a deep draft for quality Offensive Lineman. I say we spend our 1st Round pick on the OL if one of teh top tier guys is available. If not we have to address one of our other holes whether it be FS or CB.

I do not want Long or any other Michigan person on my team, however, Long just doesn't fit our scheme. Baker I'm unsure of at this point still. Richardson is my favorite right now, followed by Oher probally.

I'm not so sure about needing another CB that high...the staff seem pretty high on Bennett. Petey and/or Fletcher would be pretty good at nickel or dime. But with FS looking fairly thin after Philips, and CB deep if the juniors come out, I could see looking at a CB to convert to FS.

Has anyone watched the Williams kid at Oklahoma?
http://www.soonersports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/williams_darien00.html

Haven't seen Williams, but I've read many people think Nic Harris, FS of Oklahoma, is the next best after Phillips. And you wouldn't have to worry about converting his position to meet our need.

talk about timing, just received the latest newsletter from OURLADS scouting service & in their Draft Strength 2008: they have DeJuan Tribble rated as the #1 senior cb prospect in the nation. that would probably put him around the 10th overall pick if he holds true to form (which I think he will) & out of reach for a much improved Texans team.

Cherilus Gosder is ranked #2 behind Jake Long. this would project him somewhere in the teens to early 20's which is more in the range the Texans should be drafting around. that being said I really hope Charles Spencer can recover, returning to form @ LT then we can look to address the #2 or #3 cb, maybe underclassman Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech will declare :)
