"I want people to stop thinking of us as an expansion team. It's about time we make a name for ourselves."

Thanks to one of the best P.R. staffs in the league, I just completed two hours of interviews with DeMeco Ryans, Mario Williams, Dunta Robinson and N.D. Kalu. Williams spent most of the time talking about his seven remote-controlled cars, and said one of them goes 70 mph. He also has a remote-controlled helicopter that he flies around his neighborhood.

Williams offered to take the entire defensive line to Brazil this past offseason, but only two players showed interest. In football news, Williams actually said he wants to break the NFL's season sacks record, and this seems completely reasonable to me.

Robinson has apparently had a great camp. After the season, he spent two months in Newark, N.J., working out at the same facility where he prepared for the 2004 draft. I'm told Robinson has made big hits in almost every practice session.

Ryans is an exceedingly nice kid. He's already emerged as the vocal leader of this young defense. READ MORE

I am glad that the sack record is in the front of his mind, but now is the time to put up or shut up. The sacks won't be handed to him, he is going to have to put out an astounding amount of effort to reach that goal.

As far as I am concerned, with a statement like that coming from Mario himself... his image will be tarnished in mediocrity if he doesn't at least hang with the sack counts of some of the top d-line men in the league.

I am a HUGE Mario fan, but he better learn to crawl before he makes statements about dancing the jig.

My $0.02.

And I'm sticking to it...

I'd be happy with a double-digit sacks season from Mario, much less breaking the NFL sack record. At least he's got his sights set high.

Exactly. If he says he wants the record and he gets 12, we are still happy. If he says he wants 12 and he gets 12, we think he should have set his sights higher. There is no harm in shooting for the record; I really wouldn't want to hear any other answer from him.

Woa, woa - you're all focusing on the wrong thing. He has seven remote control cars, and one that goes 70? Is this trying to keep teh edge off that driving fix he needs, or is it him trying to keep focused on the speed to get around the tackles?

That's a major hobbyist and kind of a geek, if you ask me... (no offense to anyone who races RC cars)

Somebody said "I want to allow zero points a game, but we'll probably end up somewhere north of that." I don't remember who it was though, derngit. :bat:

DeMeco Ryans was named the 2006 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, so why wasn't he a first-round pick? Ryans discusses his experiences through the draft process, being a rookie in the NFL, and what he expects from himself and the Texans this season.

Chris Steuber: Were you surprised that you dropped into the second round?

DeMeco Ryans: I wasn't surprised. I was projected to go in the late first round, early second round -- it kind of fell into that territory. Watching the draft and seeing other linebackers go before me was frustrating, you know?

CS: When you look back at your rookie season, is there one thing you'd go back and change?

Ryans: I could have been a better leader. It was kind of tough at the beginning, because I was a rookie trying to learn the defense and all. I was trying to make all the calls on defense, I had a lot on my plate. I thought we played better the more comfortable I got. Our defense made a little turnaround after the first few games of the season. I think we got more comfortable with each other and I was held more accountable for our success. I think I can do an even better job this year.

CS: Did you go through any rookie hazing?

Ryans: I had to sing [the Alabama fight song] and carry some of the veterans' bags, but it wasn't that bad.

CS: How far away are the Texans from reaching the playoffs?

Ryans: I don't think we're that far off. Last year we threw away a couple of games. We had some mistakes. We could have easily been an eight or nine win team, easily. I think we're there; it's just a matter of being more mentally tough on both sides of the ball. We just have to go out there and do what we're told during practice and show it out on the field. We have to win the close games. We lost a lot of close games last year. I think we can turn that around with one or two plays, and if we do that we will be right there.

MW should have a baller year. no more plantar, no more rookie, more strength=more sacks........can't wait!!

and let me just say, being from austin and being punked by CBS KEYE, I hope MW DRILLS vince young so he gets that madden curse going and we Texans fans here in Austin can watch the games again!

They show the Titans all the time, instead of the Texans. I don't live in Austin and it still ticks me off.

It matters because then they would show the Texans more. Also, CBS KEYE in Austin doesn't show Texan games. Instead, they show Titan games.
