JaMarcus Russell's Holdout

BattleRedToro

Thread Killer
What happens if Russell and Oakland never agree to a contract?

Does Russell become a Free Agent at some point or does he have to reenter the NFL Draft?

I dunno, but I think a player coming out of college only appears in the Draft once ?
What I'd like to know is at what point do the Raiders lose their rights to negotiate exlusively with him. I guess that's the same as your, which is when would he become a FA ?
What's the big sticking point ? The money or terms of the contract ?

I think he goes back into the draft, Bo Jackson was drafted #1 overall by TB and didn't sign, he went to the Royals and played baseball then got drafted in 7th round by the raiders

I may be wrong

on a side note, what happens to the Raiders? compensatory pick for that?(not a first rounder, but?)

or is it that just just for players that sign away from a team(compensatory pick)

That is correct about Bo Jackson, but I don't know if the rules about contract holdouts and the draft are the same today as they were then.

What are the numbers?

What side is being unreasonable?

If Russell is doing this, imagine what Reggie Bush would have done last year at #1 overall.

I don't know the numbers. I just remember hearing sports reporters commenting on it, and they seemed to indicate the holdout is the Raiders' fault.

I heard he wants $30 million guaranted and Al Davis saidNO

If the Raiders do not sign him he is then elgible to enter next years draft. The Raiders do not get anything (well they save a ton of money on the cap but are left without a player).

He continued, "Training camp has such value not just to him, but to his teammates and coaches.”

Raiders owner Al Davis has stated "It's not [about the] money.” Reports state that Oakland has met the initial demands of a six-year contract worth up to $60 million, with $30 million to $32 million in guarantees, but contend that Russell's agents upped the amount of guaranteed money they want.

"That's ridiculous. It's the option bonus. They want all the money in option bonuses. And they have the first choice they've ever had, and they've got to come through with a decent deal. Otherwise, they are done in the market. That is the story on JaMarcus."

Regardless of the issue, the situation is breeding animosity within the fans and the player they pinned many of their hopes on for the future.

Well, even if he never signs, the Raiders will get first shot at him again next year, because they will likely be picking first again.

At the end of the day, this year is already wasted for him. Even if he is better than Culpepper, 0% chance in him starting any point. He will be riding the pine, and collecting his $30M+, until next season.

He is so stupid. He is honestly one of the stupidest people in the NFL or College or just period. He had an honest shot to win the QB job out of camp, and he is turning that down over a paultry few million that is sure to be lost in various taxes. He was guaranteed 30-32 million just from the contract, and if he does what is expected of his draft position and hype, he could have more than the difference between that 32 million and his stupid demands in endorsments and advertising. Basicly, he has cost himself playtime, respect, and in the big scheme, a lot of money. Just stupid.

If he doesn't sign with the Raiders, he loses one year of salary that he will never get back.

I don't understand this situation...

It just doesn't make sense.

I pretty much agree with what you've said, certainly the tone of it.
I dunno who his agent is, but whoever he did choose, that choice was probably his biggest mistake.
Somebody personally close to him, be it a family member or friend, needs to get next to him and explain he needs to get hold of his agent and let him know who is working for who. Or maybe just replace him right now would be the best move ?

The differance is the Raiders want it as a Signing bonus, because if he acts up, ala Vick, they can recoup some but if it is a roster bonus then they cant recoup any of it.

From what I recall being reported by espin.

That's probably the reason the Texans always have a #1 pick signed before they draft them. Smart on the team's part.

WRONG. dumb on the team's part. choose the best player available and don't let signability enter the equation. Bush would have signed for roughly the same money Mario signed and Bush ended up getting about the same money from New Orleans. Yeah, he wasn't going to sign pre-draft but a deal would have been made. For crying out loud, if the Saints can sign the guy why would the Texans have problems. McNair and Bush's agent played chicken and Bush's agent blinked...Bob didn't but in the end got the lesser of the two players. Who really won? Bush is now in NO playing in the NFC championship while we are still waiting for Mario to show some heart.

Bush may have held out in TC but last time I checked, the agent got him into TC and in preseason last year. McNair blew it on the Mario/Bush pick but hopefully he will be redeemed if Mario shows more than what he has to this point in time.

not hating on the Texans. I love em. But they blew it and no amount of rationalization and homering can change it. May they be redeemed.

If he doesnt sign he will go back in the draft next year but I guarantee you he won't be chosen until the mid to late first round (at the earliest).

he is blowing it and its obvious greed is getting the best of him...shame on him

i do believe he is represented by a friend of the family...unsure though

Just saw on the bottom of the espn ticker that he is reportedly going to sign a six year deal tomorrow and report for practice on Wednesday

The Guaranteed money according to Fox is 32 Million! I think the NFL has lets its rookie signings get out fo hand! Thats a 5.5 million bump from Mario last year and more than a hell of a lot of proven players in the NFL while contract. I just dont see how this can continue i without actually outting bad teams at a disadvantage agaist the cap. Considering the number of top picks that dont succeed and the amount of money it takes to sign them the #1 pick coould turn out to be a curse!
