The Z Report Recap - Aug. 27

I'll only recap the Texans part here. He discusses the Astros and a little bit of UFC as well.

- Says the most impressive thing about the game was the crowd. The crowd was very intense. Disses the Cowboys fans as well a little.

- Offensive line was solid, especially the first unit. Good pass protection and run protection was much improved. Steve McKinney solidified himself as the starting center.

- Believes Jacoby Jones has to be starting. Jones is the playmaker the Texans have been looking for opposite Andre Johnson. Walter is just another guy, Jones makes plays. He plays with great confidence at WR and keeps the safeties at bay.

- Believes Ahman Green is as good as Domanick Davis was during his prime. He's good at keeping his feet moving which allows him to break tackles and gain the extra yard.

- Believes Kubiak's playcalling was good. He feels the offense didn't kill themselves with bad plays. Matt Schaub has a good head on his shoulder. He anticipates where the hole is going to be in the offense, not afraid to work the middle of the field and to throw to secondary receivers other than Andre Johnson.

- He liked the fact that the Texans went into some 4 WR sets and some empty backfield sets. He also liked that they used some shotgun. It's a change of pace. It wasn't wildly successful, but he liked the fact that they used those sets. A change of pace can catch the defense off guard.

- Believed Amobi Okoye played much better at the point of attack. He went up against Leonard Davis who is a decent guard. He didn't get pushed around by him.

- Travis Johnson played better than Anthony Maddox and believes he will end up starting over Maddox. He also liked the fact that they shifted Mario and try something new. He liked Shantee Orr going to the weak-side.

- Could be an interesting battle between Earl Cochran, Shantee Orr and Jason Babin. Orr may be earning a place on roster just as a pass rush specialist.

- Mario wasn't great, but he played much better. He played on the strong side in college and may feel more comfortable from that side.

This to me is a good insight and very true. The more looks we can throw at a defense the more cautious the defence will need to play.

Lets hope that we can ramp up the variety in our playcalling this year over previous years. The playcalling in the last couple of years has been painful.

Doesn't believe Ahman Green is as good as Domanick Davis was during his prime. He's good at keeping his feet moving which allows him to break tackles and gain the extra yard.
I didn't know DD was in his prime or even got a shot to get into his prime

Hang on, I edited that. I misquoted him. He said he believes Green is as good as DD was in his prime which I'm assuming was in 2004 when he ran for about 1200 yards.

Well he can believe it all he wants. And you can Want it all you want. I stand by what I've previously posted. Unless three guys drop down stone cold dead, this isn't happening. Jacoby jones is the slot reciever/WR #3 for '07. Learn it. Live it. Love it. Kubiak's play book is 4,832 pages long. Another example that the Z man doesn't know what he is talking about.

I wouldn't go that far, I can easily see by the end of the year Jones playing #2 wideout. I don't think he will start the season, but at some time if he keeps making plays he WILL be moved over there. Playmakers play, thats just how it goes in this league. Kubiak already admits Jones is pushing Walter hard.

Kubiak's play book is 4,832 pages long

Sounds like someone has a new catch phrase... you should try to shorten it or something... you've used it the same both times I've seen you post it...
maybe change it to 4,832 > #12 or something a little more catchy... I did like the whole live it, learn it, love it thing though... On the other hand, it was a bit 80's don't you think? (Fast Times at Ridgemont High?)

Ok, all snideness aside, Kubiak hasn't shown much hesitation getting rookies into the line up in the past, and JJ is one of the more sensational rookies of the Kubiak era... I agree with LZ that he needs to be on the field. Starter or not, he needs to be out there a lot.

I'm pretty sure Lance Zierlein knows more about football than most of us here.

Hey, Hey! We're not supposed to admit these things. :specnatz:

Even though we all disagree on just about everything, it is an unwritten (as far as I know) rule of posting that we are the all-knowing Gods of our sport. YOU ARE A GENIOUS. DON'T EVER FORGET THAT AGAIN, lol.

If Jacoby is the slot receiver already, why would three guys have to drop dead for him to start?

I think I will trust the Z man over Threetoedpete. I know that's a real leap of faith, but I am willing to take the plunge. :texflag:

I don't want Jacoby to start just yet...

I like the role he's in right now...

Lance had us taking Brady Quinn at #8 some time back.

When it comes to the NFL I believe he is a good source, among many, to help provide a clearer picture on what may go down. His, or others, thoughts on the Texans are usually presented by our members in a more expedient fashion. Much like the Quinn prognostication, in my opinion, there is some taintedness going on, due to his connections.

I like jacoby in the Randle-El mode he's in now. We need him as an instant offense guy off the bench. Walter won't be bad as a possession guy as long as we have Owen working the middle like he's been doing.

for what it's worth...

on my first rewatching of the cowboy game, I noticed Orr's sack was when one of the cowboy o-linemen (#76) was still frozen in his stance when the ball was snapped.

either Orr was incredibly fast, or #76 just let him breeze right by without a touch.
