The Potential of Number 12

Alright guys, I'm sure you'll all agree that Jacoby Jones has been absolutely amazing. He returned two punts for touchdowns in the last two games along with an amazing catch in the endzone during a two minute drill. I cannot remember the last time I saw someone who was doing things like this right away. The stuff he has done is not coincidence, he is very skilled and I believe we might have just caught lightning in a bottle. The question is, how good will he be? Andre wasn't doing things like this when he came into the league, could JJ possibly become our number one wide receiver in the future? I realize that it's just the preseason, but you have to admit, any time he has the ball everyone holds their breath and half-expects something amazing to happen. Is the sky the limit for this guy or what???:fans:

On one of the other JJ threads, someone posted a link for HPF.com about how JJ reminded the writer of Ernest Givens when he came into the league.

If he can be that kind of player we would have a good one.

If he exceeds that we would have a great player.

For now I am happy if he can be an effective number 2 and take the pressure off AJ and make some plays in the return game.

With the exception of great hands, Andre was the best WR prospect until CJ this year. Andre was a specimen coming out, and played for a premeir team in a premeir conference. Jacoby has a lot going for him, like his size/speed ratio and his willingness to fight for the ball. The willingness to go get the ball regardless is what I like most about him, and it took AJ a year or two to really develop that trait.

I've said this in other threads, but Jacoby reminds me a lot of a very young T. Owens coming out of a small school with his physical build and tenacity. Jacoby appears to have #1 potential down the road, but that is down the road a few years. Andre stepped into the #1 and he was ready. Jacoby is right now our #3. I feel he will take over the #2 during the season, but we need to be patient with him. He came from Lane college, and he was a last month study project for me last draft, and probally everyone else. He needs time to adjust to the league. Yes, he has made a instant splash thus far, but everyone hits a wall, some repeatedly, and coming from a Lane, we don't know how he will handle that yet. He still needs to work on his routes, just like any rookie WR in the league. Basicly, what I'm saying is that he has the potential to be a very good reciever down the road, T.O. potential to an extent possibly, but we as fans need to ease off the instant expectations and let him learn. We don't need people calling for his head to roll after he makes his mistakes, because honestly, how often can we even find our own?

He has a long, long way to go if he's going to be as good as Andre Johnson...
Uh huh. And I stand by what I posted last week. I heard a number last night on the game....Kubes' play book is four thousand, eight hundred and thirty two pages long. That's pages ...not plays. Then you got Sherman sticking in his power rush stuff in there....see where I'm going with this ? I'm as excited as anyone. But there is an NFL reality here. Just be glad we finaly found the #2. Five years, two picks and a plethera of veteran moss backed free agents aside, he looks to be the real deal.

Projecting him as a full time starter there in his rookie season, is a bit of a reach.
Just except the production and the excitment and be gald we found him. Little steps. There is no need to rush him. Kubes is going to put the ball in the kids hands as much as he can without damaging the gem. Who else would you rather have gromming JJ other than coach ? I can't think of anyone else.

Anyone happen to notice Devin Hester's Grand experiment at Wr this week end ?

Based on what I have seen, we can cease using the word potential and start using the word production in regards to JJ. 100% baller.

I use to call Givens the rubber band man, after the spinner's song
http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2091. Givens took some monster shots.

He's not as quick as Givens. Jacoby Jones may be faster. He's certainly bigger. I don't think anyone has got an acurate number on the guy. We had a guy in baytown in the seventies ( having a brain fart can't remember his name now) that was a prety fast human being. Even at Jr high, you could see the guy gain ground with every step. I think J.J. is one of those guys. Put a clock on him he looks prety ordinary in the forty. Put him in pads with people chasing him, he has that extra grear few human beings have. You can see him gain ground & time with every step. He drops the throdle into "full millatary power", there are few folks who will chase him down.

TBS, I've compaired him to John Taylor of the 9ers. He's not there yet. Once he has the off season to learn how to set up DB's with his feet and brain, he'll be on the road to being a better #2 that John Taylor was. And John taylor was prety dat gummed good in my book. No A.J. isn't going anywhere. He'll be glad for the single coverages though. We don't know how good A.J. can be yet. The kid will peel the skin off of that onion IF he, J.J. continues to develope.
They both need each other to be as good as they can be as a dual threat in the future.

AJ will be our number one receiver as long as he's still in a Texans uniform(unless we still have him till he's like 34 years old lol). I think JJ will win the #2 spot during the year though. I like knowing that he'll be lining up vs. nickel backs instead of starters though, that's really gonna be funny watching those poor corners trying to cover him and all his skill!

yup the guy is fluid in his moves and if he can learn some of the veteran WR tricks, the sky is the limit with this guy.

he doesn't have Deion's raw speed but he has the good footwork and balance that made Deion such a dangerous return man. if he can learn how to play WR in the league he could be our Reggie Wayne type guy opposite Johnson. i read the guy gained like 4 inches during his college years. that helps explain while he ended up playing football at a school like Lane.

I think Jones is perfectly suited to be the #3 WR. If he we're to be the actual #2, then Kubiak would follow the unwritten code of deeming him too important to be a punt returner.

It seems as if some people think that if he isn't "promoted' to the #2 spot, then that somehow translates that he won't be on the field as often. With today's NFL, with the way players are rotated on and off the field during a game, that's a false assumption.

Letting him return punts, and bringing him in on 3-wide formations is the perfect way to use this kid.

Wali Lundy had an exceptional preseason last year, too. Now he's fighting for a spot on the team. I'm not trying to belittle Jones' accomplishments during the preseason. He's made the ESPN highlight reels for the second week in a row. He is an amazing find and a great returner. But I'm not as convinced when it comes to his receiver play. He's going to need time to adjust. And has he seen that much first-team offense time? It seems like he is making his great plays against the second- and third-team defenses.

His TD reception was just as impressive as his punt return. He turned up field and found the open corner for Schaub to drop in a pass. That shows some poise and saavy for a rookie kid...

Completly agree with this post. Walter will be good enough for us at #2. Let JJ cause problems with the nickel backs.

The way that it's been looking so far in the preseason, Daniels will be having a big year for us & sooner or later, teams will have to start paying attention to him. That should free up our guys on the outside, no matter who's at # 2.

We finally have weapons folks, & it's a beautiful thing!

Agreed on OD having a big year. I think more then #2 WR he'll be the one where you have to scheme up the middle and some ofthe little square out routes that's going to give LB nightmares. I think he'll be casuing some big mismatches in our passing game and at least for the early part of this year Jones will do the same As the #3.

Exactly.

I think JJ will eventually be our #2 reciever, probably next year or even late this year. He still has a bit of maturing to do. But, when we get to the point where AJ & JJ are our starters, AND we still have a running game AND we still have a TE, the Texans offense will be a very exciting thing to watch. I'm still thinking 8-8 this year and not being a losing team again for quite some time.

Not meaning to hijack a thread or anything, but it's the Number 8 that's knocking me over. That TD pass he threw to Jacoby, told me right then and there, that we NOW have a quarterback that will lead us all to the promised land.

I have no doubt about that in my mind.

I disagree....

Jacoby has shown good route running and good chemistry with Sage and Schaub...

I think the guy makes an instant impact all season long...

I was waiting for someone to make the Jacoby/Lundy comparison. I hate to say it, but I agree. After years of being a Texan fan I am scared all of this overeager "Jacoby for rookie of the year" hype, is going to jinx us. You are right, Lundy looked incredible during the preseason. He was going to be the gem of the draft...a sixth round pick starting in the NFL...then he hit a wall....and got trapped under it. Let's let JJ develop and not overhype him yet. Let his production during the regular season speak for itself, and then get excited.

Don't know what you guys were looking at, but to compare how Jacoby has looked to how Wali looked is....well....not very attentive, IMHO....

There was nothing about Lundy's game that ever said "incredible"....

Potential? A young Randy Moss. He's fast, he can leap, and he has "it". We'll see whether or not that's how it shakes out, but I can see that potential.

his 2 catches in the Dallas game were both against first team dallas defenders although they arent really that deep in the secondary. heck they had Glenn on AJ. I think Kubiak will ease him into increased playing time as the season progresses. we will have to wait and see. I do think he has a fire and energy that noone can deny. that alone is a very powerfull weapon that propels the whole team to do better.

JJ has definately shown that he's ready to play on the big stage. He's got very good instincts as a WR & I think that will go along way towards making his transition from a small time school to the NFL a little easier on him. There are plenty of WR in the league who don't have those instincts as a wideout. They're simply track guys who can catch the ball. That doesn't appear to be the case with JJ. He'll still have an uphill battle if he wants to make a big impact on this team, but he's definately got the talent & the drive to be a bright star on this team this year and for years to come.

While the first full day of NFL games that actually mean something is still a fortnight away (that’s 14 days for those of you without a dictionary), the buildup before the Texans preseason tilt against the Cowboys felt like the game was going to count in the standings.

Every Texan fan I know had been talking about this game for a week. Without a doubt, the third preseason game is always the most fun to watch because the starters typically play late into the third quarter. With the opponent being that team from Little D who has won the exact number of playoff games since 2002 as the Texans, the hype was huge. Not to mention, the Cowboys are expected to be an elite team in the NFC, so the game was going to be a good test for our refurbished team. If the 28-16 victory is any indication, 2007 has the makings of being the most memorable one for us long suffering (well, five years) Texans fans.

The new fan-favorite made sure that the pre-game excitement was worth it. Holy Jacoby Jones took the Cowboys’ first punt 91 yards to paydirt to further ignite an already raucous crowd. This kid’s speed and awareness is unreal. He found the open seam and cruised to the end zone.

You know what's interesting. I remember Sirius NFL interviewing Jacoby about a week before the draft and they asked what team he thought he was gonna end up with. he stated that he thought it was gonna either be the Texans or Titans because they were the only two teams that really showed any real interest. Well i'm glad the Texans got him in the third cause I have a feeling that the Titans were gonna select him after the Texans.
