Dogs seized in Vick investigation face deadline, could be euthanized

RICHMOND, Va. -- More than 50 pit bulls seized from Michael Vick's property face a Thursday deadline to be claimed. If no one comes forward, they could be euthanized.

Federal prosecutors filed court documents last month to condemn 53 pit bulls seized in April as part of the investigation into dogfighting on the Vick's property. No one has claimed any of the dogs, which are being held at several unspecified shelters in eastern Virginia, the U.S. Attorney's office said Wednesday.

sadly, I thought of this earlier this week. I mean what do you do with any dog that was trained to fight..I thought... They can't be family dogs because of what has happened to them... so i thought they would be euthanized.

however.. only solution I could think of is if these dogs possibly could be turned over to the police for k-9 or to the military..that is the only hope for any of these dogs..

Honestly I'm not sure even they would want them...I assume most their dogs that go through training begin very young with no previous training of any kind.

It's terrible for it to end this way but it might be the only option.

true... probably too late

They have to put them down. If they don't we will read on CNN.com that someone has been killed by one of the dogs.

Ok, gotta point it out in spite of my feelings on the whole matter.

Vick kills 8, the government kills 50?

Ya know you're gonna get this defense from those who support him :)

Again, I'm not defending Vicks actions, I'm pointing out what you're gonna hear from that side. To respond to your statement. I'm not sure how you can use humanely, and death in the same sentence. To me, death is death, some methods seem more horrendous than others, but I personally wouldn't choose any of them for myself :)

The government has to put them down because of Vick. These dogs won't be able to safely interact with other dogs or humans and are a risk.

No disagreement at all with your arguments guys, the guilty party is Vick. But have you ever tried to reason with the unreasonable? :)

they should put them on Ebay

A judge in Houston tried that last year in the big dog fighting case last year

"Update August 24, 2006 As you may know from the posts below, Texas Justice of the Peace Phil Fitzgerald has refused to allow the puppies of the 225 adult pit bulls seized from a breeder, to be spayed/neutered. There is no appeal from that order.

The judge has also ordered the pit puppies shall be sold at auction. "

This was a well thought out judicial decision:sarcasm:

exactly.

And don't forget, all of us pay for dogs and cats to be killed by the pound everyday with our tax dollars.

Don't get it twisted. Vick is going to jail for setting up for being involved in interstate dog fighting and gambling. The horrid details of how he killed the loser dogs were inserted just to paint him to be more of a villain.

Some of these dogs are probably not fully grown...

I would imagine that some, not all, can be saved....

He should be charged with there deaths as well since he mistreatd them and now have to be put down out of mercy, he is still at fault.

I think anyone who still supports vick should have to spend the night with a few of those dogs and in the morning if they are still alive re-ask them if they support mike vick.

You'd be surprised how easily dogs fail the SPCA's ""can they safely be adopted" test. Sounds horrible, but there are so many strays, you need a way to determine which ones will be adopted and stay adopted. I doubt any of the Vick dogs would pass the tests.

PETA needs to get its **** together and adopt those dogs..they are going to look real real bad if they protest and march some of his dogs dying but stand idly by while the rest are condemned. You telling me that organization doesn't have the financial resources to assure that they are cared for?

Adopt them and do WHAT with them?

You cannot place these dogs in adoption homes due to the potential liability. There's no way to socialize them at this point.

I've been reading lots of posts on a couple of high traffic mb's and it strikes me as amazing how ignorant some people are about dogs and animals in general....makes me wonder if anyone ever gets away from a computer anymore.

PETA actually runs one of the bigger euthanizing operations around.

Because of the high number of unwanted companion animals and the lack of good homes, sometimes the most humane thing that a shelter worker can do is give an animal a peaceful release from a world in which dogs and cats are often considered “surplus” and unwanted.

Are you referring to Herv's comment? The problem is time and money. yes, SOME of these dogs could be saved if taken into special care and are given special training and fed and sheltered. But shelters simply don't have the time and money to do this.

Better to spend the time and money on dogs who are at a point socially where they are ready to be adopted. As well as I am sure it cuts against them being pit bulls.

Their goal is place as many dogs as possible in good homes. To that end, one of the means requires putting down a large amount of dogs that aren't likely (due to behavior, illness, etc.) to be adopted and stay adopted so the money and space can be used for dogs that have a future.

It's not like there's a big dog farm where the dogs can live out their days in retirement...?

*edit - see cak's post*

I'm agreeing with herv actually. Once you map a dog's brain it's nearly impossible to change his nature. I know Herv is a dog breeder...he runs a kennel. I almost opened one myself.

not at all, a dead is dead. I know, i see lots of it everyday, doesn't ease the pain anymore easily.
If bad newz kennelz didn't map these poor dogs brains to kill and maim they would not be facing this issue...this is still on Vick and the shallow, selfish, self-serving idiots who did this to the dogs. These dogs had no shot once they were in his hands. One thing for sure though, bad newz kennels won't map anymore dogs brains to kill.

WHAT?

OK fine so you are going to take one of the dogs from your boy vick? Cool, we can give one to you and one to Portis and another to Marbury. And because I think he is a real douchebag two can be given to Mr White of the Atl naacp.

Ironic indeed.....

I don't see any irony in the death sentence these dogs got when Vick bought them. Once in his hands he is the one that gave them the death sentence...that's just another reason this is such a vulgar crime.

What the hell are you talking about? You go off on these tangents & by the looks of your posts, it's as if you don't even finish reading & comprehending the other person's b4 you pounce.

Dying a horrible death & a peaceful is still death, what part of that don't you understand?

well, if you don't see the irony in this, then i don't know what to tell ya.

You act like it's the people who love the dogs that are doing this in some sort of a vacuum. They are doing it for one reason....Michael Vick financed and ran a dog fighting ring. I don't see the irony because I only see this as an extension of Michael Vick's shallow, selfish decisions. These dogs don't die if Vick or some other ***** who fights dogs doesn't buy them. Make no mistake about it...Vick killed those already dead dogs...and Vick is responsible for the deaths of the ones that were taken from his property.

My point is very simple, you and a handful of others defended vick to the end and are now going to bash PETA (hell they plenty to be bashed on) for having to put these dogs down or sleep or ethunise what ever term you want to you use. It is going to be made to say the government is just as bad, it is not the dogs fault nor any other entity other than okie and his croonies who turned these dogs into vicious fighting dogs. To say there is no differance, dead is dead is asinnine. These dogs were made to become what they are and now they can not function in society.

If you think that is wrong, and by saying death is still death is to me saying vick did nothing wrong in his torturing and killing of dogs. Then I think you need to live with these dogs. This way you get to understand what these dogs have been turned into.

Dying a horrible death & a peaceful is still death, what part of that don't you understand?

Yeah and one is horrible and the other is peaceful. What part of that don't you understand? Same result--different route to get there. Which way do you want to go, horribly or peacefully?

well, if you don't see the irony in this, then i don't know what to tell ya.

Call Calvin Murphy's show. He'll lend a sympathetic ear. Oh and be sure and bring up deer hunting. That will get you even further. And, if you want to play the super trifecta, be sure and mention how the man is picking on a brother. That will put you into the Calvin Murphy callers HOF.

I don't...

If there are any puppies in the bunch I think they can be adopted...

Vick killed some of his dogs that "wouldn't fight" or didn't have that mean streak in their nature....

I think it's ridiculous to think that all of these dogs are thirsty for blood and none can be saved...

screw it, I give up. the 'Starburys' and Roy Jones' of the world have made their point and I have capitulated. lets make dog fighting legal....screw that, lets make it mandatory....punishable by 1 to 5 years in jail if you don't fight your dog.

while we are at it, lets start staging steel cage matches with cats and hold national hamster fighting tournaments during Super Bowl week. not one household pet species shall be spared from having the opportunity of embarking on this glorious enterprise. and knowing human nature, once we inevitably become desensitized to that, we can then start having sanctioned fights between the starving children of the world with a 50lb. bag of rice as the bounty. In some parts of the world its already taking place. The Sudanese have practically perfected it. Let's just video it in HD and broadcast it to the masses. And it will all be because of Vick showing the world that inhumanity and depravity are values to be admired not demonized.

let's start getting major corporations to endorse the most bloodthirsty trainer/dog combination with the most confirmed kills. tax subsidies for the owners of the kennels and legalize gambling on it. while we are at it we can legalize guns and drugs for the fortunate masses lucky enough to witness this new national pastime.

Vick isn't a criminal, he is an american hero. Praise be unto him who will lead us to a land of dogs fighting to the death at every street corner.

Then you have no point b/c i'm not defending him. I challenge you to go back & find 1 of my post where i said it was ok for him or his colleagues to do what he did. I'll save you the trouble, there are none.

If you focus on what i'm actually typing & quit trying to anticpate or read into what i'm saying then you might come out better. as it stands now, you think b/c i don't agree with everything said or typed on here about this subject, i'm defending him & that couldn't be further from the truth.

Tell that to the mother of a 16 year old who died of viral cardiomyopathy & suffered for months b4 finally passing

vs. 1 who died from a car accident on the freeway & see if it makes a difference in their pain.

Nice--let's bring in an extra player to try to win the debate. And you know what, most would probably never say it, but I bet most of the mothers who suffered for months secretly believe they suffered more.

But back to the real subject--the dogs themselves. People make the choice all the time to take a shorter less painful death so your example proves the opposite of your point.

Total speculation, but whatever man.....

Yeah, if you say. Couldn't be I have watched relatives suffer through both long and quick deaths of their loved ones. I don't even know where you can assert pain is the same in every instance--it can't be tested or quantified and is uniquely suffered by each individual.

But again this is off-topic bystander pain, not the suffering of the actual person or animal that dies which is the real topic you are trying to avoid.

I don't really see the argument....

If any dogs are euthanized it will be because of MV....
