Ferguson Signs With Vikings

Kind of hard to believe we would be interested in a Green Bay Packer (or a Denver Bronco for that matter). Actually, when I heard they were getting rid of Ferguson (release or trade), I figured we would be trying to pick him up because of the team that was getting rid of him.

Texans | Team interested in Ferguson
Sat, 18 Aug 2007 16:47:53 -0700 John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans are interested in unrestricted free-agent WR Robert Ferguson (Packers).

I dunno... we seem to be doing alright at the position all of a sudden...

Like I said in another thread, let's cut Bradlee Van Pelt and bring Ferguson in if he's better than anyone we've got.

We're going to be letting some good receivers hit the road come cutdown time, though.

Being available, and from your area, would the Texan fans welcome Ferguson?

I am from Wisconsin and just wanted to guage your feelings on Ferg as well as Green Gato Steele and the others who Sherman brought along from GB.

thanks psico

we are already going to have to lose a good reciever from camp cuts. I'll pass, and take my shot with our corp.

Furgeson: I like him (being an Aggie) but I agree with the other posters a) we already need to cut someone and b) not an upgrade over what we currently have.

Green: Glad to have him and I think he will have a great year and possibly a couple of good years, BUT, he is not the long term answer at RB. The Texans still need to address this position...

Gado: He's a great kid and has a great story, but I beleive the Packers got the better end in that deal (Morency).

Steele???!?

Really? I've heard rumblings that Morency won't even be the starter this year (being beat out of B. Jackson)...not like Gado is. I think the trade is a push.

I hadn't heard that, but I will take your word for it. My assessment was strictly based off last season... So I defer to you, "it's a push"

Morency currently holds the starter spot, but his knee injury isn't even going to let him practice for at least the next two weeks. Jacobs will likely be the starter at the beginning of the season.

That's it...not quite as damning as I first said. I still think the trade is a push.

We're already going to have cut four good guys to keep six. And I'm wondering who they're going to have to cut to keep WR # six. They may bring him in for a sniff, but I don't see him making the team. I believe Gado makes it. Steelle made a ferrocious hit on kick off coverage in the chicago game. Always helps, but I believe he is on the bubble. They're not going to keep five TEs.

Steele was the player that lit up the Bears punt returner on the sideline on one of Stanleys shanks

The tight end. Injured last year, missed the season. He's been playing special teams and playing pretty hard.

But I don't see any way he makes the team. I think Joel Dreessen has a better chance than Steele and I don't think Dreessen makes it.

OKay.... I remember this guy now and I also think you're right about Dreessen making it over Steele.

I saw this on Clutchfans:

...
" I played against this guy in High School, he was a freak. Everyone who saw him play knew he was going to the pro's if he could figure out how to get into a decent college and I commend him for getting his stuff together and getting into A&M cause this guy was a straight up thug. We had an off campus class together where kids from all of the Spring Branch schools came together, I got in his head about our team kicking the crap out of Spring Woods, I really wish I would have fought him cause that story would have been a lot better than the one I'm telling now.

The play I remember was a scouting tape we watched on him against Spring where on a kickoff return he ran to the 30, dodged tacklers by running back to the 10 then ran across the 50, dodged more tacklers by running back to the 30 and then took it to the house."

I think we're pretty much set at WR so I'd be surprised if we picked up Ferguson. But stranger things have happened.

OBTW, Charles Woodson, like Ahman Green, IS getting reeeeally old you know, so if you guys are thinking about cutting him, give us a ring.

:phone:

If he could stay healthy he would be worth a look. The guy has great talent but he seems to get injured way to often. Not sure if its a conditioning issue of if thats just his life!

Well, it seems like the Vikings want him:

http://www.startribune.com/vikings/story/1371568.html

The Vikings' largely inexperienced receiving corps could be getting a veteran addition.
Robert Ferguson, who was released by Green Bay on Friday, worked out for the Vikings on Sunday and then was scheduled to board a plane for Houston to visit the Texans. Ferguson, 27, also was given a physical by Vikings doctors, who undoubtedly want to make sure the oft-injured player is healthy.

Ferguson's agent, Brian Overstreet, said late Sunday that the Vikings had not extended an offer to his client but that he expects to talk to the team today. Overstreet had preliminary contract talks with the Vikings earlier Sunday but made it clear nothing was imminent.

"We're not to that stage yet," Overstreet said, adding that something, most likely with Houston or the Vikings, would get done "within the next day or so."

Ferguson's choice might be Houston because he's from the city and Texans assistant head coach Mike Sherman is the one who pushed to draft Ferguson when he was head coach in Green Bay. Sharper, though, talked to Ferguson and got the impression he might want to stay in the NFC North.

"He has the same feeling I did [after leaving Green Bay]," Sharper said. "You want to play those guys twice a year."

Thankfully we're at a point with our WR depth that we don't really need to bring a guy like Ferguson in.

Well it looks like if the Texans want him he will sign here.

From chron.com

Ferguson arrives
Free-agent receiver Robert Ferguson arrived in his hometown a day later than he wanted because of bad weather in Chicago.

Ferguson, 27, who was waived by Green Bay last week, is taking a physical today and working out for the Texans. They may sign him to a one-year deal for $860,000 if everything works out.

"I'm going to let them know how much I want to be here and see how much they want me to be here," Ferguson said Monday night. "At this point in my career, I'm not big on the money thing. It's definitely about opportunity."

I say bring him in. I'm not saying he's better than anyone on our roster. Well maybe I am. Andre Davis? I don't know much difference exists between the two of them really. Both first round picks who haven't panned out. (It happens to other teams too). Both seem to have physical ability. He is familiar with alot of what we're trying to do on offense.

I think we look something like this:
AJ (duhh)
in no particular order for the next 3
Mathis
Walter
Jacoby

We figure to carry what 5 recievers?

Let Anderson can go to the practice.
Let Ferguson and Davis have a shot to prove they belong on an NFL roster. Why is competition good for the team in every other area of camp, but WR we need to stick with our guys.

Don't be surprised if we carry 6 WR's with several playing double duty on ST's.

I dunno.

Bethel Johnson, Andre Davis, Kevin Walter, Jerome Mathis, J.Jones have all contributed on special teams. Can Ferguson do the same? Because at this late date, I'd be amazed if he leap-frogged Jones and Walter to become the #2 WR. Unless your name is Andre Johnson, I doubt if anyone makes the squad just as a WR.

Its not totally impossible, because I've seen Ferguson make some highlight reel catches up in GB, so when healthy, he can play. But he'll have to be really special to crack the unit that's already there.

I kinda wish he'd been available before we brought in McCardell. And I like McCardell... Ferguson's youth (relatively speaking), speed, and prior experience in Sherman's offense would edge out McCardell's craftiness and work ethic example, IMO. Problem is both of them may tend to be fragile.

I imagine his coach was yelling, "No! You *****! I'm gonna kill you! Yes! No! Stop! Turn around! Oh, my God! Yes!....I love that kid!" :)

We got half the guys GB didn't want anymore and they are a lousy team. Is there anybody Sherman doesn't want from the Packers? I had Ferguson on my fantasy team a couple years ago and he never panned out. He's not a bad player but he ain't nothing special.

FWIW, Adam Schefter seems to believe Ferguson will sign with Houston today. Personally, I think we're ok at WR. But hey, if he want's to come in for next to nothing. More power to him.:specnatz:

Adam Schefler(sp), reported last night that he met with the Vikings yesterday, but was on his way to Houston today to meet with the Texans....

Just posted by John McClain at chron.com. He is going to the Vikes.

"After meeting with the Texans on Monday night, receiver Robert Ferguson left Houston for Minnesota early Tuesday morning with the intention of signing with the Vikings.

Ferguson, the Houston native who was waived by Green Bay last week, was accompanied by Brian Overstreet, his Houston-based agent. Ferguson met with the Vikings on Sunday.

The Texans told Ferguson if he signed with them he would be placed on the scout team in practice this week. The Vikings told him they would sign him and play him immediately.

"We told Robert that we'd evaluate him on the scout team in practice this week," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We're continuing to evaluate the receivers we have, and we've got some tough decisions to make on them. And they've been here the whole camp. We wish Robert the best of luck."

I'm glad. I didn't think it would work here

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp07/news/story?id=2984850

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Veteran receiver Robert Ferguson agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday.

Ferguson, who was cut by NFC North rival Green Bay on Friday, also visited his hometown Houston Texans before deciding to join the Vikings' inexperienced receiver corps.

Ferguson was drafted in the second round by the Packers in 2001 and will immediately become the most experienced and productive receiver on the Vikings. Despite battling numerous injuries, Ferguson has caught 116 passes for 1,577 yards and 12 touchdowns in his six years in the league.

Before his arrival, Bobby Wade had the best numbers on the team with 101 catches and just two touchdowns in his career
.

Am I thrilled with the WRs we have? NO. But I am content with the WRs we have. I am glad we didn't sign him.
