Grading the Cardinals Game

Again, the team did better than I thought they would.

WR - Grade=B+. Jones is making this group special. Walter made a good catch or 2. Charles Adams on the TD!

TE - Grade=A. Daniels and Putzier look really good.

Oline - Grade=B. I didn't think I would be giving them this high a grade all year. They looked much better on both run and pass blocking. Of course, it was the Cardinals defense versus the Bear's defense. But, good reason for optimism. I think Winston looked good.

QB - Grade = B+. Schaub looked much better than last week and so did Sage. Of course, goes to show what I've said many times about all QB's. It is much easier to look good when you have a running game and pass protection.

RB - Grade=C+. Ahman Green looked good overall as did Gado. Dayne and Lundy didn't really show anything. I liked Gado's energy.

DLine - Grade=D-. Travis Johnson and Earl Cochran had the best game (not excellent but, better than the other dlinemen). The rest were non-factors. Enough said.

MLB - Grade=C. Not as good as last week. Too many tackles down field and not at the point of attack.

OLB - Grade=D-. Same as MLB except not much of a factor at all. Seemed to be in disarray.

CB - Grade=D. DROB should put on 25 lbs and become an OLB - he would probably be All-Pro. Other than his tackling there wasn't much positive here. The INT's were more a result of poor passing than good defense.

S - Grade=D-. Definitely in disarray.

ST - Grade=B+. Last week I said the only way they could be better was to take a return to the house and Jacoby did just that! However, our coverage teams weren't as good this week.

Coaching - Grade=A. Again, I can't blame the coaching for lack of execution on defense.

Basically, our defense appears to be in disarray and I really can't improve my prediction of 5-7 wins yet.

Okay that's my take on it, what's yours?

Agree with many but would change some

Safeties a F. (CC is enough said)

ST would give a C, Jones was the only bright spot, Kickoff coverage was terrible today.

Coaching a B, good but wondered about couple of calls.

I agree, which is why I don't agree with most of the offense not getting As. How do you score 33 points and not get mostly As on offense? Oh, I know--you're punt returner has an 80 yd. TD return; but, alas!, ST didn't get an A either.

I think almost all of your grades are too low and harsh. I would probably agree with all of them, if they were all about one grade higher (B+ up to A- or A, etc.).

I agree with your grades almost exactly. I was watching Winston specifically on several plays, and he seemed to be doing very well. I was a lot less impressed with the rest of the line, but they got the job done, so I can't judge them too harshly. One or two of the 2nd team players also looked better than I had hoped. Studdard or whoever was playing 2nd string left guard looked decent, and Black didn't stand out one way or the other (a big improvement over last week).

On the DL, I was impressed by TJ, even on some plays that went away from him, he seemed to be giving a lot of effort, and getting a good push. I'd be interested to see how he'd do against first-string players, though. I'd even consider swapping him and Okoye, just to see how things go. Overall, there was very little positive to see in the defense, though the interceptions have to count for something.

I'd go with more like a C+ here. I don't expect to see AJ too much.. we know what he can do. Walter made a nice grab, as did JJ. But for the most part I still think this group is average at best. I know alot of people are high on Mathis and or Jacoby or Walter. I'm high on Jacoby and lukewarm on Mathis and Walter. I think Walter is the perfect slot receiver but not a great #2 if you're going to put him outside.

Even with Ryans, Daniels may turn out to be the steal of last years draft. Ok maybe that's a little high, but man that kid is good.

A I don't really grade the backup here. Hopefully we're not seeing him. as for Schaub, I know its the preseason. He made some nice moves, and bought time when he had to. He delivered the ball nicely and on time.

B I don't know why everyone is saying Green looked so good. He has looked ok. The rest of our backs ran well. For Green, it probably has alot to do with not getting in a real rhythm so I'll give him a pass.

I changed a few grades. But overall I agree with your assessment. Our defense, however, will look better in the regular season. Our offense will look worse though. Like I said in the other thread, we're not doing anything on defense... not disguising our coverages... not running many stunts... its going to be a little different when they count.

WR - Grade=B. As a group, I think we're looking good.

TE - Grade=A. Not much to say here.

Oline - Grade=B-. They're playing pretty well... but they weren't playing the Bears, either.

QB - Grade = B. Schaub underthrew 2 passes that could have been TD's if he had gotten them out in front of the receivers (1 to KW and 1 to AJ). He also had a bad pass to OD in the endzone... although Kubiak seemed to imply that the fault there was with OD, it looked like a bad pass to me.

RB - Grade=C. There were more flashes this week than last week but I still want to see more from Green.

DLine - Grade=C. I think the problem here is that we expect this group to excel and right now, they're just playing average. Since they're playing average, I gave them the C. But they did help a LOT with the stuff against Edgerrin James.

MLB - Grade=C. I didn't see a lot from Ryans or Diles this week.

OLB - Grade=C. I brought this up to a C because of Clark's play on the 4th and 1.

CB - Grade=D. DRob is looking good. Other than that, we were goign up against a great receiving corp and we did not step up. They were ripping yardage off of us.

S - Grade=D. Are we really sure we don't want to move CC over to SS and move Hutchins up to starting FS? Are we really, really sure?

ST - Grade=A. Our coverage could have been better but, come on, Jacoby Jones!

Coaching - Grade=B. I think the coaches did a good job but I'm really wondering about the design on that wide pitch play that Green got stuffed on as well as the coaches' decision making regarding personnel on the defensive side of the ball.

I can't wait to see how we perform next week.
 
Offense looked great - A. O-line and RBs looked much improved, in particular.

ST - A. Running in a TD is great.

Defense - D. Had a hard time grading this one, but they just looked ancillary at best.
