Trying to understand Mario...

It looks like he thinks too much when he plays. Kind of like, he wants everything to be perfect every snap and that kind of mindset makes nothing perfect.

Do you think its mostly mental? Because he's pretty much been abused since he got here do you think that has worn him down significantly from a mental standpoint? Whereas if he didn't have the # 1 pick pressure he would be a different player?

I'm just hoping he picks things up in the regular season to cut out the chatter from the rest of the nation. I think they'll still be talking about him even if we're winning.

It could be mental I don't know. It might be mental if we see poor results in a full game, since he hasn't played a full game yet in his 2nd year, we might want to wait to see how he progresses when the Ws start to count.

He has to set the blocker up by bullrushing him (or attempting to) for about 40 plays first.

Why does it have to be an either or thing ?

Mario looks so poor because it's a combination of both. If he was great or even average at one of them it'd show in his performance. The guy lacks the initial burst to blow by defenders, and he doesn't use his head to use his abilities that he DOES have. The guy may one day get it, because he certainly has the tools, but what worries me about MArio is his rate of progression.

He looks the same as he did as a rookie....Where is the improvement in his game ?

What is the problem with his progression?

Basing it on one year, he had a above average rookie year for a DE...

So I don't know where you are getting progression from...because he hasn't even played 2 seasons yet so its hard to tell whether he's progressed or not.

Over at RDE. :)

Who was that other #1 overall draft choice DE who only registered a few sacks in his rookie year who just happens to be in the HoF now? :shades:

6.5 sacks as a rookie isnt a huge jump over Mario. Mario is only 21, and you people kill me with your stupidity. You expect every player we throw into the trenches at 21 or so to be an instant impact. Get over yourselves people, let the kids develop and play. I don't agree with the Okoye pick, but he will be a solid DT by the time he should be a normal college SR.

I agree, but he will have already made a gazillion freaking dollars while he LEARNS to play. That money should be going to old players with disabilities or something.

PS-or me. :)

Really. I know a guy from the state of Texas that plays DE...guy had like .5 sacks his rookie season. Had 4.5 his 2nd year, and about 6 sacks his third. This same guy broke the Sack record (despite Favre giving it to him) and is looking to retire soon and is pretty much the one of the best(if not) the best DE playing this generation.

People are just expecting too much out of him right now...especially in the preseason.

true, but that is the nature of the beast in the draft (thread about rookies in NFL section) and rookies getting zillions of dollars before they are established

Chill people, chill!!! This team as a whole has displayed marked progress over last year already. Good things are happening and those things will hopefully snowball into Mario and TJ, Babin etc maturing into a dominate unit. And last time I looked it is still the preseason, when the bell rings for KC then its time to turn the dogs loose.

I wish I could rep ya, but I'm all repped out for the day.

Nice words...

I wonder what the average tackles are for a DE is esp for the likes of Strahan,Bruce Smith, Kearse, richard Dent, Sean Jones.. etc etc.. maybe 4 a game?

with that Said.. I think the main point is: what is Mario doing when he isn't in the play?... (tying up 2 people?,getting any kind of pressure..etc.etc) that is what concerns people (I think) on this board.

Well, i couldn't see it, but somebody said he was pretty much on the ground on those plays. :gun:

He did fall down several times. I think they would've changed his cleats in a regular season game, because several of those times it looked like he slipped to me. I know that sounds far fetched, but sometimes little things like cleats make a big deal. I also saw Dayne lose his footing once as well, and Spencer Tillman incorrectly called it a shoestring tackle by the nearest player to him.:splits:

Do any of the older members of the message board remember the time Howie Long got in trouble for wearing illegal cleats?:specnatz:

I'm not calling him the "B" word, im just wondering why he looks so mechanical out there. The college film he looked to be a lot more agressive, I know that's college but he just looks way too mechanical right now.

You don't have to tell me that. Junior High RB, Touchdown immenent, one cut and go (all the way); instead, I slipped and planted my face in the mud. :gun:

I don't think you can say that about the defense yet. Offense yes.

is everyone on board with the 4-3 scheme & Richard Smith developing talent? I'm not, at least yet. they are struggling because they are not playing to their strengths & its too easy for teams to neutralize with single coverage. At least slide into some 3-4 alingments during pre-season with Mario & Okoye playing RDT/LDT engaging double teams while Babin/Anderson blitz @ OLB in obvious passing situations
