The Z Report recap - Aug. 13

TexanSam

Hall of Fame
- Glenn Earl's injury could spell doom for his Texans career because of his injury and CC Brown is a natural SS. Glenn Earl could be on the PUP list next year because of the recovery time if he's still here. Mentions that he was sucker punched by a teammate his rookie season which is why he wasn't on that team. Capers and Co. kept that under wraps.

- Says Von Hutchins has better natural instincts at FS than CC Brown did. Brendan Harrison may get more reps during preseason now.

- He didn't think the D-line was good during the 1st game. Okoye did not hold up well at the point of attack. He's not a great anchor guy, he's a shoot the gap guy. He needs to get into the gaps and cause havoc. He says Okoye has to be like Tommie Harris, the Bears D-lineman who is also a shoot the gap guy.

- Says Mario is going to have to at times dominate games. He has to get to the edge better and get to the QB. He also says that he also has to use the inside move. Players will get so afraid of his outside edge rush that he needs to take advantage of getting inside as well. These are the things Mario has to do. Z says he's like a sophmore in college in terms of his knowledge of the positions. Is pretty basic technique wise where he could get away with brute force in college and needs to improve his craft. He needs to start making an impact on the game year two.

- Anthony Maddox got pushed around too easily. May see Jeff Zgonina get some playing time if Maddox can't hold up at the point of attack. Wouldn't surprise him to see Zgonina get some playing time as part of the rotation during the season.

- Said once Babin got locked up with an O-lineman or tight end he gave up or got stalemated too often. Says Babin looked like a guy who was looking to get to the QB instead of having the offensive lineman as his primary target. He thinks Babin is figuring out how to rush the passer at this level.

- Schaub showed poise in the pocket. The play when Walter dropped the ball is a play Carr wouldn't have made. Schuab kept his poise, made a quick read and threw the ball.

- Thinks Winston did a decent job. Says the pass protection wasn't bad but the three step drops the Texans did are designed to release the ball quickly.

- Bennett didn't have a particulary good game. Ditto with Dexter Wynn.

- Kubiak wanted the media to know that Patrick Pass had a good game. He can play fullback and running back. Z says he wouldn't rule Pass out as the 3rd running back. He can also play special teams.

- With the linebacker corps (and other positions as well)as deep as they, you're going to see better players on special teams

- He says the Texans aren't good enough to be a playoff team yet but they are good enough to make things happen for themselves in the 4th quarter and to win games in the 4th quarter. This could be the difference between being a 5/6 win team and a 8/9 win team.

- He doesn't think Pitts will be back this week. Is interested to see how Petey Faggins and Dunta Robinson will play against the talented duo of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin of the Cardinals.

- Says Zac Diles had a very good performance.

Most interesting thing to me in that is that Patrick Pass might make the roster as the 3rd RB. When considering the final roster I was figuring that he might get cut in favour of Gado and or Lundy. I guess with Cook out and Abbate likely possibly best suited to spend time on the practice squad to learn the position Pass can backup FB as well.

The one thing with that plan is that Abbate could be a terror on special teams and I think would be great value for that alone.

Joe Marciano spent a ton of time talking to Patrick Pass during the game.

I don't see why you would carry 3 people capable of playing FB. Surely the roster spot would be better served at another position.

If you were going to carry to FB surely you make the 3rd RB the best running back you can find and I think Gado is better than Pass.

Based on what? He hasn't been here that long. Maybe you've seen more, but I've only seen Pass take a few snaps at RB and FB during the last open TC session. IIRC, he got to run once and looked okay. And I don't want to see Gado go either, unless it upgrades the position. IMHO, Gado should be slightly ahead of Dayne on the chart (he's quicker and faster; Dayne is bigger, stronger) - but that's a different discussion.

And who's to say Pass doesn't beat out Abbate (who can be stashed on the practice squad) and Cook (who seems to have a fumbling issue) for the #2 FB spot...?

I judged Gado over Pass on the basis that Gado was the starting RB for Green Bay when Green went down a couple of years back and did pretty well. Pass hasn't done much of anything as a runner.

The argument was originally about the make up of the RB/FB depth chart and that Pass's emergence effects Abbate's prospects of making the active roster.

This should be interesting. No question that Leach is locked in as the #1. Pass could wind up as the #2 but Abbate won't go silently into the practice squad night. He'll go down swinging. If he goes down at all.

yep, the comp level at this year's camp is definitely more interesting than in years past.

Didn't Gado got pushed into the starting spot after Green AND Najeh Davenport went down? So he was their 3rd string there but he did do a good job once he got into the lineup.

Yes. And Gado has shown nothing of his 100 yard dash top speed on the field as a Texan. He may make the team, but it won't be above Dayne and as a speed back he is a poor man's Chris Taylor, who was also totally unproven.

You may be totally right about that. But Gado is still faster than Dayne (I know, that ain't sayin' a lot). And I don't think anyone showed a more explosive burst than Chris Taylor during the OTAs. Not even Green.

... and I'm still mad at Dayne for smashing into Spencer's leg - he owes us big time.

well we know green is number 1 for sure but whos 2 and 3? I project it will be ron dayne as our number 2 and he will be our situational back like 3rd down, and pass as our number 3 guy, what do yall think?

Well, I think Green and Dayne are already set as #1 and #2. Vonta Leach is the #1 FB.

Pass, Abbate, and Cook are all possibilities for the #2 back. I haven't seen what Pass can do, yet.

If Pass lives up to the talk we've heard, then I expect him to be the #2 FB like they had expected to do with Chris Taylor. He'll fill a role like Mike Anderson did at Denver where he's a FB sometimes and sometimes a tailback. Abbate ends up on the practice squad. Jameel Cook ends up on the street.

That leaves us with Gado, Lundy, and Walker. I think Walker goes to the practice squad. I don't think Lundy has eligibility. So one way or another, we cut a promising young back. At this point, I have no idea which way it goes but I'm leaning towards Gado. I want to see them play some more.
