I didnt catch this during the game but after playing it back on dvr Mathis would have taken it to the house if the kicker hadnt have first ran out of bounds and came back in to make the tackle. I can't believe the refs missed this one! It was very obvious. Mathis is the real deal. If he stays healthy this year he will be a major contributor as a returner and receiver.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will be long before people start talking about Mathis' use of DHMO... I can't say that he gained any competitive advantage by using it, but I'm certain that he would have been at a severe disadvantage if he had not used it at all...

If
he can stay healthy.

It's not against the rules to run out of bounds and come in and make a tackle...

You just can't be the first player to touch the ball...

I.E a reciever running out of bounds and coming back in to make a catch...

Isn't the rule that you have to be pushed out and you have to try to get back in bounds as quickly as possible? You can't get run out of bounds as a gunner on the punt coverage and then run down the sidelines out of bounds and then come back in bounds to make the tackle. I've seen them flag that.

I think you are correct.

You have to reestablish yourself on the field of play--basically you can't ambush someone from the sideline--otherwise it is legal to go out and come back in to make a tackle.

The kicker ran out of bounds ahead of mathis and ran in from ob to make the tackle. He made the tackle on the sideline from ob. I can't see how this can be legal. If anyone has dvr or has taped the game go back and look at it. I realize that it is just preseason but geez! I guess I don't understand either how a receiver can run out of bounds and come back in to make a catch in the field of play and it be allowed. Maybe it is and I just have never payed attention to it.

I see guys go out of bounds and come back onto the field to make tackles all the time...

In fact I've never heard of it being a penalty for a defensive player going out of bounds and coming back in to make the tackle

Pass touched by receiver after he has gone out of bounds
Once a player goes out of bounds he is not allowed to touch the ball on that play.

I looked at it. That was totally legal. He was shoved out of bounds and then came back in as soon as he could and made the tackle. He didn't hang out on the sideline and then come running from out of bounds with a head of steam to make the tackle. He wasn't out of bounds for more than a second or so.

Correct he was shoved out at the 45 yard line by #33 which I assume was Lundy. The original camera angle was crap but the replay tha followed was looking back up field and you could see the contact.

By the way did Mathis seem to be running at full speed to everyone. I know he had to make some good moves and the kicker had the angle but it always seemed to me Mathis had just silly speeed. He looked fast and had a great run just not as fast as he looked before. I could be wrong.

he is almost there i think after preseason he will become less hesitant, even though now he runs with his helmet down and smashes into people
