Game evaluation

I realize I am just another fan and have no experience to base my opinion on. However, as I watched the game Saturday I wrote down what I thought during the game.

Bradley Van Pelt: "Hello, I am your server today. May I tell you about our specials?"
Walter: Did nothing to make me say he is the #2.
Jacoby: Hey, Andre this guy is going to make you look even better. Should be the starter by week 3 of TC.
Mathis: I knew he could. I knew he could.
Ahman Green: Are you kidding me? Showed me nothing.
Dayne: Is the singer Taylor Dayne available?
Lundy: This guy is going to get cut.
Mario: Mario? Mario? Where art thou Mario?
Okoye: He is 20. He is 20. He is 20.
Black: Ok. He is third string so who is Salaam's back up?
Babin: looking pretty good.
Putzier: Oh, yeah. He is on the team. Looked pretty good.
McKinney & Flannagan: Did not see any errors so that's good.
Von Hutchins: OH YEAH! We might just have a free safety!

Stanley vs Turk: Hey Charlie? I've been defending you man. What happened?

Schaub: You do not have to be perfect to take this team to playoffs. Your few plays supported my thoughts. One bad play on over throw but I can live with that.
 
My evaluation, in a nut shell: pre-season is fool's gold. :D

Seriously, we went 3-1 last year and it meant absolutely nothing. So this year I'm just enjoying seeing the guys play, but fully realize that evaluation has it's limits when both teams know the game doesn't really matter.

Only when 0:00 means that the game's outcome is in the history books do I get too excited about performances. I saw some 'good' things, some 'bad' things. But they are all relative at this point.

Agreed! For what it's worth, the Colts have won 1 of their last 9 pre-season games (IIRC):texflag:

Depends on what you were looking for...

I don't exactly remember how we played in the pre-season during the Capers era, but Last year in the pre-season I could tell we were an improved team...

Of course we didn't win during the regular season with a 3:1 ratio, but some of the positives from the pre-seaon did carry over...

Definately, but again for what it's worth... we are leading the AFC South in points scored after the first week of pre-season :toast2:

We were 4-10 up until the last two games.

I didn't see much improved last year from TC to regular season, to be honest. Our defense came out of the gate in the regular season getting owned and we lacked a running game. About the only thing that seemed to have improved was our QB, and that was an illusion.

FWIW (which isn't much), the only thing that really caused me any concern last Saturday was a complete lack of pressure on the QB. Obviously our first team was playing a good o-line, but we just looked like we were being controlled the whole time. Hopefully the so-called 'fire' is started at some point, because if our line fails to create pressure, it's going to be a looooooong season.

I did...

I thought we had improved TE play, a playmaker at MLB, and overall we were just more competitive in my opinion...

I think if you are just merely looking at records then it's easy to say we didn't improve...

I thought that in just one off-season Kubiak had brought in a different mentality with the players...We weren't exactly getting the desired results, but I could atleast see an upward trend....Otherwise I wouldn't have been too excited about this upcoming season....

You knew we had a playmaker at MLB after just pre-season? Man, you should work for an NFL team as a talent evaluator. It's your calling! :cowboy1:

We may have been competitive in pre-season 2006, but it did not translate to the regular season for awhile. People put too much stock into meaningless games filled with 4th stringers and guys barely hanging on to their football careers. JMO.
 
They did stunt at least once, but I think Kubiak and co. were hoping and looking to see if the d-line could get pressure by their lonesome.

Another concern is the running game - I don't think it was necessarily the o-line's fault. There were holes, but Dayne and Gado were getting killed by the backside pursuit. So either they weren't fast enough or it's this new scheme.

Very true. Kubiak said so during the Sunday presser.
Speaking of speed, man I sure did miss seeing Chris Taylor.

I was concerned about comments by Ahman Green & Mario reported in Chronicle either Sunday or Monday. I tried to locate but could not. Sunday said something like he was just trying to see how the offense was going to go and today page C9 Mario http://www.chron.com/ under spotlight see Mario's 0s misleading. Williams said he wished he had taken advantage of some opportunities.."It was just so early I just did not want to jump the gun.." Excuse me? Somebody tell me I read that wrong. Right or wrong Williams is under the microscope this season. I read this as he could have made some plays but did not realize he would only be in for a few snaps. WHAT?

I don't think it is...

We have four first rounders on the D-line...Expecting those guys to get pressure without blitzes or stunting is....well....logical...

I agree we should be putting some pressure without stunts, but the Bears were in max pro quite a bit. 6-7 against 4, eh..I'm not worried about it. Yet! :texflag:
 
Sometimes, on this board, it seems like we're JUST coming off the 2-14 season. We improved last year, I think we've improved this off-season and I, for one, am pretty excited to see what we can do with a QB who has the coach's confidence.

Not to mention a better running back, a better #2, a somewhat-proven TE and a defensive line that, while they didn't do so well on Saturday, are hungry.
