Schaub unimpressive in Texans start

HOUSTON -- Matt Schaub's first pass for the Houston Texans was for 2 yards. His second one was dropped. This revamped Texans offense sure looks a lot like the old one.

Schaub, who replaced David Carr after backing up Michael Vick for three years in Atlanta, had an inauspicious debut going 3-for-5 for 25 yards. But the defending NFC champion Chicago Bears scored 13 fourth quarter points, including a 47-yard go-ahead field goal by Robbie Gould with 36 seconds remaining to beat the Texans 20-19 in the exhibition opener for both teams Saturday night.

The Texans got Schaub in a trade with the Falcons in March and released Carr, the No. 1 pick in 2002, after he failed to lead Houston to a winning record in five seasons.

That first drive, which also featured a 1-yard run by new Texan Ahman Green, ended in a punt. On his second and last series, Schaub looked a bit better, finding Andre Johnson for a 15-yard gain and Owen Daniels up the middle for 8 yards.

The Texans had to settle for a field goal that put them ahead 3-0 after Schaub overthrew a wide-open Kevin Walter in the end zone on third-and-4.

"I thought he did some good things," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He had a chance for a lay-up touchdown there at the end and he misses Kevin in the corner of the end zone."

And this was against a Bears defense missing both Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher and star defensive tackle Tommie Harris, who didn't suit up.

I thought Schaub did fine considering it was his first start for the Texans and a lot is expected .

I like the fact that he did'nt panic when pressured and he tried to make a play .

I like the fact that he did'nt look like this ...

Nice find.......essentially he's saying what you and most of us are thinking. It's tough to prove yourself in 1 quarter......your first quarter..........but he showed veteran poise and didn't make any crucial mistakes (especially when you understand what happened with the overthrown potential TD).

I don't think there is anything wrong with making certain judgements about guys in a limited time, but I just don't think he knows what he's looking at...

The AP writer who covers the Texans is a she.

I guess she feels personally disappointed that she wrote about what a fabulous leader Schaub is, and then he didn't go to Iraq to personally beat down the insurgents in slightly less than a quarter of preseason football.

She writes a point of view. And supports it with certain facts. Happens everyday, everywhere. Makes it difficult to figure out for yourself what is true and not true, especially for things you didn't see yourself. Teaches you critical reading skills, and makes you appreciative of when you can read and see the press conferences yourself.

Yeah but, if it was a certain other QB not to be named, you would be ripping him apart for missing the TD and ripping him for the 2 little dink passes he completed. After all, he didn't go thru his progressions and find his receivers down field proving he has no field vision or pocket presence.

Before you call me a xxxx supporter, I'm all for Schaub over xxxx but, let's keep things in balance. Schaub was annointed the starter before he ever got here, was annointed the 2nd coming of Favre by many posters here, and Kubes himself said when the trade was made that he could step right in and run this team. Now, because he didn't come out and look like Favre, folks are saying it will take time ........ which is what I've said all along. It may be mid-season before he is comfortable and up-to-speed on his new team, if the oline will let him.

Did you see the 3rd and seven play in the first Texans first possession? Schaub read the Bears blitz, picked up his hot receiver, then put the ball in Walter’s hands.

I remember the day we traded for Schaub, my friend called and said "We traded for a slower version of Carr, how is that suposed to help the offense?"

I saw a guy with a great arm and a good head out there. I also saw a guy that is going to be a sitting duck in the pocket.

Yes, you are right. No doubt he will be better than xxxx for us. But, it will take a little time and he needs a better oline to be as effective as he can be. All I'm saying is be balanced in your criticism and your praise.

I haven't even read the article yet. As if Schaub had anything to do with the loss. I guess the writer...."heard it from a friend who...heard it from a friend who...heard it from another..." Their 3s and 4s were better than ours. No big deal. When I saw BVP hit the field for his second series, I looked at my buddy and said, "Texans lose with a 4th quarter field goal." Unfortunately, my ESP was on that night. :gun:
