Bethal Johnson had a good return too. Its going to be a hard to cut Mathis, Jones or Johnson at this point. Remember you can never have too much speed.

The 4-3 fits Babin much better then the 3-4.
 
Both Schuab & Rosenfels looked good. Granted Rosenfels looked better, but he's been in Kubiac's system longer. Schuab looked composed and make his reads quickly and threw the ball on time. I like what I saw.

Jacoby is gonna be special, Mathis looks really good too but if I could drum up the market & a team needs a returner in exchange for a high 3rd or low 2nd I would trade him & split duties with Jones, Andre Davis & Bethel Johnson. As it stands now it looks to me at least the Texans are loaded with quality kick & punt returners.

Fletcher looked good @ CB.
Harrison @ Safety.
Abbate @ FB.
 
Cochran looked good.
Dayne looked good.
Sage was solid.
Bennett is on the bubble with me.
Defense 1 & 2's looked good.
Starting oline looked good.
Shaub may not have a good stat night but he made some smart decisions. If only the receivers would catch the friggin ball.
Jones will win the number 2 before camp ends.
Mathis looked really good, but did he lose a step?
 
I'm OK with the game. It could have been better, and there are some players I expected more out of. But all in all, our backups held up pretty well against their backups.
 
- Jacoby played great, I really liked what I saw from him and it seemed like he kept finding a way to get open.

- Was very unimpressed with Kevin Walter, I don't know how he could easily have the #2 WR slot when he played the way he did today. It was really great when he dropped that 3rd down ball at the beginning of the game which would have given us a first and that he should have caught, especially if he wants to be a #2 WR in the league, let alone in the NFL.

- There was a lot of pressure on the QB tonight by our D, was pretty happy with that, but no sacks to show for it until the end.

- Wasn't extremely pleased with the defense. Especially when all the first teamers were out there they were giving up a lot of completions.

- Was disappointed with the play of Fred Bennett. Couldn't cover, I think it was Mark Bradley who torched him two plays in a row, wasn't even looking at the ball when it was in the air and was just looking at the reciever. I don't know how you can be much of a playmaker like that. After everything we heard about him I thought he would be atleast decent, but I didn't like what I saw tonight.

- Jason Horton kept getting beat also before he was taken out in the end by his injury. Probably will be cut.

- Bradlee Van Pelt is only here because he knows the system. He looked awful out there. And that's probably being generous. He couldn't even hit Lundy two yards directly in front of him without bouncing it in. Him and Earl Conchran single handedly lost the game for us. Not that I'm ticked off about losing.

- Overall we were decent, but we definately need to improve.
 
The Earl Cochran "roughing the kicker" call was crap. He got blocked into him.

The QB problems appear to be fixed.

Man. It was nice seeing the old Jerome Mathis again.
 
As much as most of us have been negative to Kris Brown last year (deservedly so), and his not being given any competition in TC, no one has really mentioned the unflawed performance he gave last night. Maybe, again, Kubes has seen what we cannot.........his potential re-emerging.

He caught 1 pass for a first down and they tried like heck to rip the ball out of his hands, but he held on.

Not sure about his blocking - hard to follow as they didn't seem to show enough replays and they seemd to run a lot of plays where the fullback went one way and the RB went the other. Not sure if it was designed that way or one or the other went the wrong way. On one play if the RB followed the FB -(think it was vonta) think we might have had a TD.

I forgot all about our scoring machine.

I was joking with my friends last night that I should pick up Brown in my FFL.

Points are points so I was happy to see him hitting things dead on.
 
Some folks need to go back and look at the so called drop by Walters. As he was catching the ball (which was a bit off target) the defender wacked his hand. Hardly a drop.
 
How did the O-line look? Since I haven't seen any complaints, I assume they did OK. I'll be sooooooo glad when I get moved and can get my NFLN on DTV.

I have played Kris Brown on my FF team for 4 out of the past 5 years, and I can tell you for sure, he has won more games for me than I have lost. Kris was determined last night. Smooth, consistent, accurate, focused! I will definitely play him again this year, if I get the chance.
 
Cochran played like a man possessed. The roughing the kicker call was marginal/ticky-tack stuff --- looked like he was blocked into the kicker.

He's a POSSESSION RECEIVER. As such, when he gets his hands on the ball no one should be able to take it from him. That's what he brings to the table. If he can be stripped, then what's his value? It sure ain't speed.
 
I didn't see the game. Here are some of my observations and questions based on information that I've gathered.

Matt Schaub is an upgrade. He and the receivers need more time to be in synch, but he has good pocket presence. The spin move into a laser to AJ was shockin' awesome.

Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels will be our weapons in the passing game.

I think Jacoby Jones showed that he could make defenses honest or make them pay when it comes to focusing on AJ. I think there needs to be a WR #2 battle in camp rather than a WR #3 battle.

Kevin Walter dropped one (he's in there for his hands) and may have been too slow on the dropped TD pass. The bottom line is he was involved in two close incompletions. The only incompletions for the first team.

We have a pro bowl returner once again. I think Kubiak wants more from him. Kubiak doesn't want Mathis to be content with being a return specialist. Did Mathis play much at receiver, and did he get open much?

Running game. Where is it? We have Denver and Green Bay minds, and we can't get a freakin' running game? We don't have the big immovable linemen which makes me think we should have run blockers. I think the whole hybrid zone man crap really is a problem for our line. Let's at least be good at one thing and capitalize on it. I have every confidence in the full back Vonta Leach. Was Mike Flanagan starting at center? How did Steve McKinney do at left guard? If Chester Pitts comes back healthy soon, I think we run better with McKinney at center. For some reason we never ran to the left. Any ideas why? Was Kubiak trying to keep Ron Dayne from breaking Ephraim Salaam's leg?

Our depth at tight end is sick...as in good. I think it's our greatest strength, and we need to find ways to capitalize on it.

Mario Williams does not appear to be a sack specialist in the NFL, but it doesn't mean that he's not going to be a good player on defense for us. Opposing teams have to account for him, and we have way too much depth on the defensive line to not find a way to capitalize on it.

I heard nothing about Amobi Okoye. It's his first NFL game. Does anyone have a review of his performance for us?

I did notice that Chicago ran it up the middle at will for about 4 to 5 yards per attempt.

I hope we are a bend not break defense rather than an attacking defense since we look like the former rather than the latter.

Dunta Robinson was kicking butt just as we expected from his performance in camp.

With Glenn Earl out, C.C. Brown should be the starting strong safety. So, who should be the starting free safety, and who are the leading candidates for the discussion? Von Hutchins made a good play on the interception. Jamar Fletcher was in on a lot of tackles. Is Brandon Harrison anywhere near ready to start in the NFL?

How was Charlie Anderson? I didn't hear much about him except that he helped setup the nice hit by DRob on Cedric Benson.

Everyone seems to agree that Matt Turk is our new punter. Kris Brown is my new fantasy football kicker. Jerome Mathis is going to be exciting as our kick returner, and Jacoby Jones looks like our new and fantastic punt returner.

What do we do with all of these guys that have speed and return skills, but are deep on the receiver chart?
 
Maybe it is just me and I need to look at the game again, but my impressions about Dunta were that yes he was hitting hard and was all over the field, but he wasn't covering worth a damn. He was hitting people, AFTER they catch the ball. It was like he was a safety playing the CB position. Again, maybe I am totally wrong with this assessment, but I need to look at the game again to be sure.

we clearly missed Pitts on the goal line series....the interior 3 didn't get the push I'd like to see.

how is this for a good nickname? Amobi "the invisible man" Akoye

Benson is a hoss....he is going to have a huge year...he will pound many a D this season.

I can't get too excited about Jacoby Jones....:specnatz: awesome

Pretty sure this is the play where Glenn Earl got ran over by Benson. Amobi was thrown aside on this play leaving a huge hole for Benson to run through.
 
For real, Amobi had a good game. He did a great job of beating his blocker and ran straight up the middle and applied pressure that could of been a sack. Chicago's QB did a great job of getting rid of the ball with Amobi in his face. 8 out of 10 times thats probably going to be a sack.
 
walter didnt drop the third down catch. it was knocked out of his hands. good defensive play.

he is just keeping that position warm for jones anyway.

okoye did not have a good game.

Okay, I'm just now learning football, but this should not happen with a 4-3 defense should it? I mean the defensive linemen should be one gap and getting sacks and tackles right? Or can you play two gap in a 4-3 or even have a combination of one gap and two gap?

I'm asking because it would explain why the linemen have nothing to speak of and the linebackers have good stats.

the way we play ball...the linemen are attacking linemen....well, in theory at least.

Yeah, it's a bit disturbing that our last 3 first round draft picks combined for zero tackles and one assist last night (Mario, Travis Johnson, and Akoye)....it was only one game...and the guys didn't play much.....so, hopefully something changes...or it will be a long season.

we like to call this our no gap system. pretty much no one gets into any gaps and we let demeco do all the work.

oh lord...the 'no gap defense'. It doesn't have the sound of the 'purple people eaters' or the 'steel curtain'...but it is catchy.

ha ha...demeco getting some exercise.

in this case...we need to do more to help our struggling linemen. send williams at the c gap, okoye at the b gap, maddox at the a gap, our sam at the c gap with williams...all on the weak side. let greenwood provide coverage in the middle and ryans back the line as he does so well.

surely we could pressure the quarterback in this way. my point is that obviously we need to be more creative to get some pressure. of course, it's only preseason, and things are vanilla right now.
