Every team needs a whipping boy. You know, the guy who drives the hometown fans and talk shows hosts absolutely insane. For last year’s Rockets, Rafer Alston bore the brunt of the blame. Over in Astros’ land, it’s Brad Lidge. Or maybe Adam Everett. Or Woody. Or… oh, never mind. Everyone not named Lee, Pence or Oswalt has taken his fair share of heat this season. As John Royal has delightedly pointed out so many times, the Astros are simply overflowing with whipping boys these days

So with that in mind, the search begins for the Texans’ player most likely to become public enemy number one. Former titleholder, David Carr, was given the boot earlier this year, meaning Houston is officially on the lookout for fresh blood.

So if Schaub isn’t the heir apparent, who is? Step right up, Mario Williams. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know you’re sick of the storyline. Guess what? So am I. But it doesn’t change the truth. No Texan is under more pressure to perform this season than not-so-super Mario. Yes, he’s still just a kid (Williams won’t turn 23 until January). And, no, it’s not his fault he’s not named Vince or Reggie. But none of that will stem the tide of anger and outrage if Mario doesn’t improve upon his lackluster rookie year. And should Young and Bush run wild in their respective visits to Reliant this season, Williams might even want to pick up a few exit-strategy tips from Carr.

Bottom line: Mario’s got to bring it every play this year. Last season he too often found himself neutralized by a single, solitary blocker. And let’s face it, when you’re a freakish 6’7’’, 291 pound athlete, that should never happen.

So welcome to the white hot spotlight, Mario. I hope it motivates you to great success. But if not, look on the bright side: There’s no way you could suck worse than the Astros

IMO Mario has been the whipping boy since......well since day before the draft.

But with his conditioning and if he stays healthy... i think we will (hope) we will be looking at someone else....:whip:

Williams looks to elevate his game
The Chicago Bears will see a lighter, quicker, smarter, happier, more comfortable Mario Williams Saturday night.

"I'm ready," he said, "to get out there and see what I've got."

Williams' foot has stopped hurting and his head has stopped spinning. His broad shoulders are no longer stooped by the expectations of the multitudes. While he may still be living in a glass house, he's no longer living under a microscope. Instead of being the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, Williams is just another second-year pro sweating through a hard training camp.

"I love it," Williams said when he was asked how it feels to not be the center of attention day after day after day. "I had so much stuff on me last year ... enough to last my whole career."

"Nothing I do is ever good enough for me," he said. "I did what I could do, but I wanted more."

In an effort to achieve more, Williams spent a productive offseason in the hands of strength and conditioning coach Dan Riley, further sculpting his already taut 6-7 frame by getting down to 280 pounds.

Yeah, I know. The guy dominated a couple of games. It took him a little while, but he was a rookie and was expected to be a run-stopper and a pass-rusher.

Everyone needs to layoff Super Mario. Guys like Mark Anderson, Tamba Hali, and Mathias Kiwanuka were situational pass-rushers. Their teams didn't try to move then inside to DT or depend on them to change the game. Those guys didn't have near the pressure to produce out there. I hope that Mario can become intense and focused. We need a beast at DE. And his only determination should be to rip the qb's head off.:d:

Yeah, Mario is a tad more intimidating than Zoolander was. So, I guess the "or else" is that they will continue to write mean things about him on blogs that few people read. :scare:

Well, since Mario is a Texan, I hope he reaches his full potential. I have nothing against Reggie or Vince and wish them well when they are not playing us. But honestly, other than when they play us, I could give a rats butt how they do. Outraged?...Nah

Pressure on a player does not influence how they play. It makes no sense. Mario was shafted when he got moved around, but he needs to play like a number 1 pick should, he is getting payed like one.

Thing about this is...he is never going to reach the expectations some people have of him...you know like break the single season sack record(or maybe he could...)

But people have extra-high expectations of him being the first pick of the draft, and they will only be satisfied if his sack stat is higher than everyone else, either that or he makes the pro-bowl every other year or seomthing.

I will be happy if he just contributes to a championship, that is all I want out of all the star players...just to contribute to winning a superbowl. He can get some nice hurries which help a lot, some TFLs, but if he ain't getting sacks than people will see him as a failure.

It is going to be a tough career for him media wise. When you have to compete against a QB and RB as a DE you just can't win that battle unless the RB and QB both turn out to suck.
