Here's a recap of what Zierlein and John Harris talked about in the podcast today. I'll try doing a recap of every one since some people here may not have the time to listen to a 25 minute podcast. Very good info that they talk about
- Talks about the 5th WR battle. Says AJ, Walter, McCardell, and Jacoby Jones are locks to make the roster. Andre Davis, Jerome Mathis, and Bethel Johnson will compete for the last spot. Says Rick Smith doesn't want specialists, he want's the 5th WR to be a receiver not just a kick returner. Harris says Mathis has looked good in recent passes.
- Bryan Pittman's job may be in jeopardy because his only role is that of a long snapper. Joel Driesen (sp?) may take the spot because he can be used as an emergency tight end.
- Z says the DB and the defense in general is getting the best of the wide receivers during practice. Questions whether Kevin Walter can be the #2 WR and whether McCardell can take the #2 spot if Walter doesn't cut it. Harris says Owen Daniels is going to be the #2 target regardless of who the 2nd wideout is. Z says it's a joke when Daniels goes against the defense. The safeties and linebackers can't cover him.
- Harris' impression of Okoye is that he's adjusting to the NFL game. He has to quit thinking too much and just start to react. He's a little worried about Okoye against the run but says he creates a pass rush. He also says that that's where Travis Johnson comes in (against the run) and maybe that will create a 3-tackle rotation. Johnson has been one of the most improved players in camp. Z is most impressed with N.D. Kalu and says he's the best pass rusher on this team and feels he can get 7.5 - 8.5 sacks.
- Z says he doesn't think anyone beats Petey Faggins out for the #2 this year but Fred Bennett is coming along quickly and Bennett may be the #2 CB next year. Harris says he's been less concerned with Faggins and more with Dunta. Says Dunta has been beat a few times in camp.
- Harris likes C.C. Brown because he hits hard. Says Brendan Harrison will be the FS down the road. Dexter Wynn has played well in camp and may be 5th or 6th corner but also plays special teams. Z says Dexter McLeon probably won't make team. CBs will be Dunta, Petey, Bennett, Fletcher, Wynn. Safeties will be Von Hutchins, CC Brown, Brandon Harrison and Glenn Earl.
- Rick Smith is much more involved as a GM than that of the Broncos. Kubiak has a lot of say so since he was here first. Z says Smith doesn't back down from his thoughts to the coach if he disagrees with him which is important.
