Looks like the Texans have some interest in Gildon.
On another front, the Packers apparently have some interest in veteran linebacker Jason Gildon, who is expected to be released by Pittsburgh today in a salary-cap related move.

Gildon, who will turn 32 in July, is the Steelers' all-time sack leader.

Peter Schaffer, Gildon's agent, told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that Houston, Baltimore and Cleveland also were interested in Gildon, along with the Packers. Schaffer could not be reached for comment.

This should be good to keep an eye on for a day or so. You do have to take anything that an agent says in reference to teams being intrested with a certain amount of salt. I am not sure that we will take a shot at Gildon and jumble the LB picture. I can't see him being that much of an upgrade at this point in his career over Wong, and they are not going to bump Babin. Peek and Orr are highly thought of by the coaching staff so I don't see where Gildon fits in.

Looks like we might be interested in Gildon. Found this on Yahoo.

The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Gildon, coming off two consecutive down seasons after making All-Pro in 2001, is expected to sign shortly with another team. The Texans, Redskins, Packers, Ravens and Browns are believed to be interested in Gildon.

If I were the Texans, I would bring in Gildon more for the veteran leadership and knowledge more so than actual play on the field. He could be a great mentor to our young LB crew, Babin, Peek, Orr. He has been playing in the 3-4 his entire 11 year NFL career, so the experience he would bring would be unmatched. There is no doubt he can still be a solid pass rusher for another year or two, but if he helps to improve our other young LBs, especially Babin, we could benefit from him in other ways for years to come.

Only bring him in if he will play for the Vet. Minimum. Sure he can pass some experience off, but don't bring him in if it means cutting a younger player who has a chance to accually play.

Just found this article. Thought that it would be useful: From houstonprofootball.com
"On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette quoted Peter Schaffer, the agent of linebacker Jason Gildon, saying that the Texans were one of four teams that have contacted him regarding the recent Steelers castoff. Gildon, 31, was released by Pittsburgh after efforts to trade him never materialized.

Rated by Peter King of Sports Illustrated as the top available player among the June 1st cuts, Gildon is a two-time Pro Bowl player and the Steelers' career sack leader. He has not missed a start in the past seven seasons, and he is a veteran of the 3-4 defense.

The Texans' interest in Gildon is intriguing, given the recent release of Charlie Clemons last month and the attention given to his position during April's draft when three projected outside linebackers were taken, including the trade up to select current starter Jason Babin. Should Gildon be willing to sign for compensation equivalent to that of an experienced situational pass rusher, he may soon find a new home in Houston's 3-4 defense.

Gildon's agent also said that the Packers, Ravens, and Browns had contacted him regarding their interest in his client."

Good post. I hope if in the off chance we did sign Gildon it would be for no more than 2 years and not a crazy amount of money.

hmm tough call. There are defintite plusses and minuses involving Gildon, but I'm leaning towards pass.

I like the idea of having a proven vet OLB on the team to teach (by example) the position. Peek, Babin, Orr 1&2, Anderson, and even Wong could learn a lot from a guy whose been successful at the position for 10 years. I also think that Gildon would perform better then Babin in 2004, but I still feel that the 2004 season falls into the developmental category.

Given that, I think that in the end Babin learns more playing the postion then he would from watching Gildon play it. As the top-rated June 1 FA, and with several teams switching to the 3-4 I don't think we'll get a bargain on the guy (I'd take him if we did.) So for now I think we need to be patient, save some cap room, and see how Babin, Peek, and Wong have performed by the end of the season and re-evaluate at that time.

I think we would get Gildon because:

He is accustomed to the 3-4 system, he could be a good situational pass rusher and mentor for the younger OLBs, we did switch the positions of Wong and Babin at OLB.

I think we will not get him because:

We have much invested in Babin, we got some good depth in Orr and Peek, given the other teams mentioned that are interested in Gildon we don't have much bargaining power against the other teams with our current cap space.

I say pass and let the young guys get in on some of the action. For all we know Peek may have a pretty good year.

Gildon could help Babin make the transition to Linebacker. The Steelers helped him make the same transition. Its always eaiser if you can get info from someone who has successfully completed a task you are tring to complete yourself.

I'd rather add Trotter and have him replace Foreman. If we got Gildon, I would suspect that Wong would move inside to replace Foreman though. Any way that we see less of Foreman on the field, is good news for me.

The real factor for us is how much is Gildon asking and how much other teams are willing to pay. If Gildon has a reasonable number on the table and it is one we are willing to consider I think CC might make the move.

I have re-read some of the posts on bringing Gildon in as a situational guy and I think there may be some merit to that, particularly in working with our crop of young DE/LBs.

I seriously doubt we go after Gildon. I know he would be a good fit here, but other teams are pursuing him that have greater needs right now. To anybody that thinks he would not be an upgrade, just consider this; Gildon still had 6 sacks last year and was a leader on a defense that ranked 9th in the league.

We have plenty of DE's. What we do not have is a proven NFL edge rusher. We have some projected types...and some average types. But no proven big time edge guy. That is still our biggest need until someone can step up and fill it.
Vin...I'll buy that the pass rush is currently the biggest need we have, but how would Gildon fit in the puzzle. I know he could play for us...I just wonder what the ripple effects of signing him would be.

So who do you bump? There is a lot of talk about Foreman...but realistically he isn't that bad, avg NFL MLB, but not bad. Orr or Peek? I can't see them dropping Peek based on their investment and his supposed potential; Orr...maybe, don't really know enough about him to make a call. Wong and Sharper...they're locks. Evans? I like the guy and he has a great rep with DC...but what's his potential? :um:

I agree with V on this one. You never short-side yourself when it comes to bringing in talent. You bring in all the talent you can, and you let the players compete to see who is best. I believe we have 4 FB's on the roster at the moment, and I am sure we won't start the season with that many. Of that 4 there are 3 quality guys (Baxter, Norris, Stackhouse). So eventually 1 or 2 will be cut. The players compete to earn their spot, nothing is given to them. The same thing can be accomplished by bringing in Gildon. You let the LBs compete during training camp etc. and then you make a decision about who to cut. I am not saying we will get Gildon, but if he did come here for a reasonable amount of $ then why not see wins out.

Good point. Seeing what they have done with FB and TE, I wouldn't be shocked if they did bring in Gildon. He's a proven pass rusher, and we all know that is our greatest need right now. But even if a move isn't made for Gildon, I believe with the recovery of Payne, Walker and addition of Smith, there will be pressure put on the QB - and the LBs we have at present (Foreman, Sharper, Wong, Babin, Peek, Orr) will all look like superstars.

I think he would be a great pick up. He Can get the job done. But the texans arent exactly the team that spends the big bucks, which is what he will get. Even Trotter at ILB, would be good, but too expensive for them. Expect them to bid, but once again be outdone.

Gildon and Trotter will get way more than Wade did from us.
Barret Green, Dhani Jones, Brandon Short, Marcus Washington, Carlos Emmons. We had a shot at all of these guys. And didnt land one of them. The Texans were outbid and will be for Gildon!

What do you think a fair asking price is for Gildon...I wouldn't want us to cut into the cap too deeply, after last year having some slush funds for emergency signings is in the back of my mind here.

Trotter's last contract that he got after two pro-bowl seasons and then underperformed in fulfilling was 7 years $35 mil, i.e. $5 mil per year. Do you really see him getting anything close to that at this point? Jason Gildon just got released from a 5 year $23 mil contract. He isn't likely to get the same deal he had either. Todd Wade signed a 5 year $ 25 mil deal with the Texans, i.e. $5 mil per year. Extremely unlikely either gets as much as Wade.

One consideration for Gildon, is that if a team does sign him to a vet minimum contract, which I believe is around $755k then he only counts $450k on the cap because he has played ten years and the league encourages keeping vets.

They have to want to play here. You cannot just throw out money "out-bidding" people for FA's and win in this league. Players like to go to winning teams.
Winning teams as in Washington? A 5-11 team isnt exactly a winning team. Wait a tic. Werent we 5-11? I guess that does mean that you can throw money at a player to play for you.

Not sure what the other teams intrested in Gildon have as negotiating room in their Caps. I was figuring Vet minimum with some good preformance bonus clauses included...probably centered around sack numbers. For a guy like Gildon I suspect he is going to be looking at 2 primary factors...team most likely to get into the playoffs, and (more importantly I think) who will give the best shot to start.
Like I said...I buy into signing him. Vin made a good point...don't get too wrapped around current talent when there is a chance to bring in an upgrade or at least increase the quality of depth.

Good information, I hadn't heard of that rule before. I could certainly get on board at that price or similar. However, my sense is that one of this years 3-4 converts will be willing to pay him a stater's salary to meet their new need for a 3-4 OLB in which case I would rather pass on him then try to outbid another team.

He will not sign for the veteran minimum. He is still a quality LB. I would figure he would go after something former team mate Levon Kirkland got from the Seahawks. Kirkland signed a $7.5 million, three-year contract with a $2.3 million signing bonus to play with the Seahawks. I would say something a little under that.

Meanwhile, Antwan Peek is backing up Wong on the right side. Peek started four games for Clemons last season, putting up modest numbers. But he’s been one of the team’s most pleasant surprises in the off-season.

“Peek looks like how you would hope a guy would look in his second year,” Fangio said. “He’s more confident, he’s smarter and he’s doing a good job.”
From houstontexans.com--how happy they are so far with Babin and Peek does play a role in whether they will pursue Gildon.

I agree with you Bottle. IMO I really think something needs to be done with Wong soon, say end of this year or sometime next year, unless he can pick up his performance because his performance is not worth his salary, he produced better in Minnesota. I say try him inside next to Sharper a bit, try that with Babs and Peek on the outside... :twocents:

I know this may be irrelevant to what yall are talking about but I really like Peeks attitude. This was a kid that was going to be a special teams star last season. During that time he mentioned that he is going to work and work hard so he can get an opportunity to start and he soon did. I also remember two times in which I saw Peek after a win. One was in person right in front of me when I saw The Texans beat Jville last year. He was so happy and over joyed. The other was when we beat Carolina. I even have a picture of it. He threw his helmet in the air and started jumping around. I say all this because I just really love his winning attitude and when you see a player like that get so happy about a win, to me it shows that is what he cares about first. Really the thing I think he needs to improve on is his speed. He pressured Mcnair so many times last year but never could quite catch him. Then again, how many actually do?

I'd be more than happy to add Gildon to the roster, but I don't see the front office making that move right now. I also don't think he'd sign for the vet minimum, but we should get a better picture of that very quickly--IF there really are 4 teams that interested in him.

The young LB talent like Babin and Peek is great to have, but it would not be bad to have an old-but-healthy hand around to provide a change of pace or matchup if things start going bad for one of the young rookies at that position.

No matter. I'd be pleasantly surprised if Gildon ends up in Houston.

You need very good vets like Gildon on young team to show guys like Babin & Peek the ropes. Gildon comes from one of if not the best group of linebackers in the league so why not bring a guy like him in? I think that he can still put up double digit sacks, pittsburgh is in a state of flux and I think that gildon can get back to his old form for at least 2 more seasons if he is in a rotation situation. :fight:

If the Texans want to sign Gildon or Trotter and believe they can sign them without restricting the future, in relation to the salary cap, then they should sign him.

Both are as or more talanted than at least one of our current group of linebackers and would provide at a minimum good depth.

The Texans have spent a great deal of time, drafting & developing what appears to be a linebacking core on the rise. For at least the time being no future investment seems warranted.
I think we'll have to wait until at least the pre-season to make any significant roster moves in response to under achievment, team chemistry or unforseen injurys. Lets keep our cap space open and our ability to remain fluid to future needs intact. :twocents:

Jason Gildon and Jeremiah Trotter would and excellent addition to the Texans defense. This way it would give Babin at least a year to learn the 3-4 scheme from Linebacker stand. What do you think?

Gildon talk with Bills

"ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Former All-Pro linebacker Jason Gildon arrived in Buffalo on Monday to meet with the Bills, a team needing to bolster its pass rush.

Gildon's agent Peter Schaffer said his client's visit is scheduled to last through Tuesday. The Bills are an attractive stop for Gildon, who was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers for salary-cap reasons two weeks ago, Schaffer said."

I would say that since Mike Mularkey was hired as the new coach from the Steelers organization that it would be a done deal. The Bills would have the strongest influence in aquiring Gildon based on the fact that Mularkey has working relationship with him. He's a Bill.

Gildon is washed up and Trotter has maybe one good year left in him and would ask for too much money. Plus, I would rather have Babin learning the job on the fly.

Does Gildon useat Posey or switch between DE and LB?

How so? Played in all 16 games and had 6 sacks, was a leader on one of the better defensive teams in the league.

Be prepared for Babin to take some time to learn the position, 3-4 linebackers usually take a couple of years to start to show some greatness.

His sacks have declied each of the last 3 or 4 seasons, he has lost some speed. He is at the end of a great career, IMO.

ESPN is reporting that one of the conditions for Gildon signing with Buffalo is that he convert to a pass rush DE. Depending on his attitude and desire to play that could effect the situation quite a bit.

Ok Wong is the man in a few years he is still pretty young plus gildon would be a great asset to the team think of our d Gildon Glenn Babin(who needs a mentor) Coleman Walker and Sharper all could be pro bowlers is wong in that list has he ever been to a probowl like gildon whos been to several so think of that. And it would make our d already the best in the afc south even better plus we would still have wong to have a mentor.
