Shanahan is regarded as a terrific young coach and not just because of his last name. Eventually, he wants to coach with his father — Denver's Mike Shanahan — but he's in no hurry to make it a family reunion.

I overheard lil' Shanny couseling Schaub on something about his plant foot the other day. I just wondered to myself....like how many times lil' Shanny had to be conscious about the position of his plant foot while staring in the face of onrushing linemen. But I guess he did 'watch' Elway -- and Chris Simms.

Kyle Shanahan played more college football that his dad, and neither of them played in the NFL...

Kyle was raised by a SB winning coach with a pretty good offensive mind, and he has been pretty much immersed in NFL football his entire life.

Ol' dad won himself a couple of Super Bowls, and he apparently had none of the advantages growing up that his son did...

Additionally, I'd wager that a large majority of current NFL coaches never had to "be conscious about the position of his plant foot while staring in the face of onrushing linemen", assuming that many of them played positions other than QB, if they played at all...

On the other hand, Bill Belichick earned three letters while playing college football at mighty Wesleyan University, and was also captain of the lacrosse team before never playing a snap in the NFL, so I guess I see your point...

All sarcasm aside, he is the QB coach, and never played the position as far as I know, so there is some validity to your POV... I just think we should give the guy the benefit of the doubt.
Everyone who knows him, and knows the game, seems to think he can do the job, so I'll reserve judgment for now... thats just me...

Did Bill Walsh ever actually play QB? He was... what... a wide receiver at San Jose St.? Guess he can't coach QB's, then.

Edit: Oh, yeah. Of course he can't. He's DEAD.

Just because he's a coaches kid who grew up around the game and played a little, doesn't mean he will be the next Walsh or Belichick, or even Shanahan. Walsh was a direct decendent of Paul Brown and we all know about the coaching tree, but as the tree grows, there's no guarantee that the next branch will be as strong. Johnny Unitas may have made a terrible QB coach for all I know. And there is that old saying, "those that don't know, teach."
 
There is also an old saying "The apple doesn`t fall far from the tree ". In my 50 years on this earth I have seen this to be true in most cases. Cut the kid some slack and give it a few years and lets see how it turns out.

I wonder about Frank Pollack too (John Benton's assistant this year). Played for several years but very limited coaching experience. (I wonder about Benton more)...

We will all be witness to whether lil' Shanny's fast track is warranted. I hope it is. I'm just not ready to crown his ass yet.

I hope you mean "those that can't, teach" Becuase if we have "those that don't know, teach" as coaches, we are in trouble

Are you dissin Shannys kid ? Shame on you !
Perhaps you don't know that already as the Texans WR coach last year, Shannys kid taught Andre Johnson everything he knows about being a receiver and was responsible for Andres ProBowl trip to Honolulu in '07.

Of course.

I think the saying goes "those who can’t do, teach" or something like that. Sometimes I'm rushing through lunch reading and posting and don't have a lot of time to prepare thoughts...... oh well... it's good that there's always people on the message board who catch those slip ups.

But .... we've had a couple of "don't know" teachers in here that I can think of (Greg Roman and Tony Marciano for starters)
