Bruce Mathews Hall Of Famer

Joe Texan

Inducted 04
Who will be in attendance when Bruce Mathews is officially inducted into the Hall of Fame. Bruce is a Houston Sports icon that is within the league of Earl Campbell, Roger Clements, Hakeem Ologawon(SP) Sorry Hakeem, Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. If you are going to Canton let me know as I along with some of my friends will be attending. Sadly we will not be taking along one of those friends who had planned on going but we wish said friend well (you know who you are). It would be great meeting up with old Oilers fans to cheer on Bruce at his induction. Bruce might have played for the Dud of the NFL but he was a significant part of the Houston Oilers and he has shined the light of Greatness on this great city. We will be tailgating on the road to the stadium on sunday so if you out and about look for us we would love to have you.

Man, I'd love to be there. Bruce has always been a class act, in spite of having to get paid by Mr. Slime.

Have fun, man! I know you'll represent H-town well!

Bruce Mathews rocks!!! Have a good time, and don't let the inbreads claim Bruce. They never got to watch Bruce take on his brother Clay in the old AFC Central days...

I better hear chants of "B R U C E", "B R U C E"......

Bruce Mathews will always be an Oiler, the tacks just got to borrow him for a while after that awesome expansion draft they were allotted.

Congratulations Bruce!

Spelling 5-0 is on the prowl..... j/k..... Easy for you to spell Matthews, but can you spell Dean Steinkuhler???

Hey Joe Texan, tried to send you PM, but your mailbox is full.

Are you going to the Oakland game with the same crew as last year?

I would like to get a ticket with that group of people if possible.

I have never been to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I know that they make bronze busts of all the players, but do they have photos of each of them in their section?

If so do you think the photos will be of Bruce in an Oilers' uniform or a Titans' uniform?

If it is in a Titans Uni that would be the biggest injustice there is. If he goes in as an Oiler, his picture has to be in that Uni.

Hakeem Ologawon(SP) Sorry Hakeem

seriously man.......Olajuwon.......... how can you not know how to spell the man who was the biggest contributor to the only championships this city has ever seen?????

Mark Schlereth: He's No. 1 in terms of being the most versatile lineman in history. He played all five positions and played them all extremely well. It's a testament to his greatness that he went from right guard to left guard, which is like telling a right-handed person to start writing with his left hand. I've seen that move destroy people's careers, but Matthews made the move seem effortless.

Matthews had great feet, fantastic hands and the best technique I've ever seen. I won't lie to you, I used to steal from him all the time. Luckily for me he finished his career playing left guard, so whenever I was going to face a tough opponent I went and got tape of Matthews playing the guy. I would try to emulate Matthews' success and formulate a game plan to defeat the guy.

Former Bronco OLineman & current ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth is definitely very high on Matthews.

We are going fishing tonight, BUT only after the induction ceremony.. I am so stoked for B R U U U U C E!

not sure if anyone else is watching the induction ceremonies right now, and not sure where i should put this but..

1) Sanders speech was perhaps the biggest tearjerker next to Earl Campbells', man...

2) Mathews did a big shoutout to McLame.

i forgot...

3) after Thurman's speech i'm turning off the TV, no way am I gonna watch Irvin's speech. the Drugtaker may think he is a Hall of Famer but he will never be one in my eyes.

Bruce's shout out to Houston fans and those "special Sundays at the Dome" was mucho appreciated.

I really appreciate how you guys are supporting Bruce & that to you he'll always be an Oiler.

I love the guy as both an Oiler & a Titan. I liked how part of his speech was about loyalty to a team & that he still thinks there are players out there who will stay with one team their whole career.

To Bruce as a player it didn't matter that the team moved away from Houston. He was loyal to his team mates & the organization & that's a rare thing these days.

I like how regardless of the rivalry between Texans & Titans fans, for those of both groups who were Oiler fans, we'll always be united when it comes to Oilers heroes.

Irvin did a great job. No notes. Almost got a little too carried away on the "why me" angle, but he handled it very well. Anyone willing to stand up in front of everyone and own what he did can't be criticized too much imo...

I didn't get the impression that he questioned why me rather coming clean with his actions. I guess I'm done crying now. There was always something I liked about Mike the person, even when he was acting a plum clown. Tonight, he shared with the world the heart of the man, and he is a tough act to follow. It takes a special person to lay his life canvas out in such a way and along with the greatness, own up to his weakness.

He was being politically correct in his speech. If you watch the interview with John McLame, he was actually perturbed when he found out the team was moving. He could have signed somewhere else, but chose to remain a Houston Oiler. After he re-signed, it was announced that the team was moving which actually ticked him off a bit, but of course he is not going to say that in his HOF speech...

Also notice that his family remained in Texas..

Who's left from the Oilers to induct?

When I took my oldest son to TC in San Marcos, Matthews was easily the friendliest and most accessible of the players; especially to the kids. He'll always have a special place with me for that. My son now has two HOF autographs on his football from that day (Moon).

Class act all the way. I hope he gets his wish and Clay makes it as well.

Awesome story TD. I hope your kid will remember that for the rest of his life...

He better...I've wanted to kick myself on more than a few occasions for not getting ME a ball to get autographed with him.

Actually, I know he does and he represents the Texans fanbase well in Denver now. (unlike my middle son who followed Bud to the dark side) :pirate:

Older son good.
Middle son bad!! Did you dis-own him yet??.... although, I guess you really can't.

You're right, I can't. Even though I tried everything to discourage him, he still insisted on getting his accounting degree and joining my firm. His office is next to mine. Disowning him might make things a little tense around here. ;)

Who's left from the Oilers to induct?

Al Del Greco maybe? idonno:

Or how about Ernest Givins?

Givins combined quickness and toughness to become the Oilers' all-time leader in receptions (542) and receiving yards (7,935). He was consistent, grabbing 50 or more passes in his first eight seasons. Although he eclipsed the 1,000-yard barrier just once (1986), he surpassed 900 receiving yards in four other seasons.

Ernest was also a clutch receiver, scoring a franchise-high eight touchdowns in postseason action.

I hope this isn't taken the wrong way but I'm hoping that we're done inducting former Oilers into the HOF. As much as I am happy to see my favorite players honored (and I can't think of any former Oiler who deserved it more than Bruce Matthews) I can't deny that these events bring out an anger and sadness in me that I usually keep buried pretty deep. The Oilers/Titans "situation" is something that I'll always be upset about and something that I'll always hate Bud Adams for putting myself and the rest of Houston through.

Watching these former Oiler players being pawned off as Tennessee Titans (Matthews is the first Oiler player I've seen inducted that really was also a Titan in any kind of meaningful way) upsets me. It's like every time this happens I have to watch "my" Oilers turn into somebody elses "Titans" all over again. I hate every minute of it. I want it to stop. I hope we've seen the last Oiler inductee.
