Z Report

Just a quick note for those of you who are want to hear some reports on camp - I have been really enjoying the Z Report on chron.com. Lance gives a pretty good summary of his observations from practice and gives his impressions on which players are distinguising themselves in practice.

http://blogs.chron.com/fantasyfootball/2007/07/mondays_texans_update_and_a_le_1.html

Being in Austin, I am having to rely almost solely what I read on these boards and in the Chronicle...and I really look forward to listening to this every day.

Salaam shut Mario down twice...

Pitts and Okoye were about equal...

Babin and Winston was equal...

Jordan Black got rag dolled by Cochran...

Travis Johnson and Studdard split...

Royal. Tell me straight. Is Shaub our QB? That's all I want to know right now. Which of them is hitting the mark? Earl thinks they are fairly equal. Is it Matt or Sage?

Seriously. Give me your call.

It's Matt... next question...

well in the report, Z was saying how sage is consistently inconsistent. he mentioned how he can throw a perfect pass to a WR and a few plays later throw a perfect pass to a LB.

schaub will do fine in this offense and we will take our shots down the field. i remember a video a while back of him throwing a ball at least 50 yards down the field.

Haven't seen them in person yet, but I'll be there this coming saturday...

One thing I will say is that at the beggining of camp the offense (especialy QB's) always looks a little shaky at first...The defense will always look more aggressive and the RB's always look fresh...Offenses are timid and methodical in nature(Even the players tend to be more docile than their defensive counterparts), and defenses tend to be more aggresive in nature...It shows at the beggining of camp when the offense is still trying to find some of it's timing and the defensive players have been yearning so long for contact because up to this point all they've been able to do is "two hand touch" the ball carriers....

This Saturday when I go, everyone should have gotten the initial shakiness out and the players should really show what they are about...

From what I've seen from Schaub though I'd have to say he's the best QB on our roster...Personally I think he's going to be really good...But only time will tell...

I don't like hearing that Mario didn't do any other moves besides bull rush as usual. I hope that changes.

I like what he says about Ahman Green. He says the difference between Green and the other running backs is night and day. His vision on the field is amazing according to Z. I think Green is going to have a big year!

I have to agree. I went to the Sunday a.m. session and Sage was on-again/off-again during his reps. Matt was pretty much on all morning. The guy that stood out to me was Zabransky. He had more zip on his passes than Sage or Van Pelt (I don't know why he's still here) seemed to. I don't recall seeing Porter take any snaps on pass plays.

I'm going back Thursday evening.

I would have posted what I saw Sunday morning but other guys summed it up pretty well so there was no need to repeat what they'd already said.

I'd like to see it go this way:

Schaub-Sage-Zabransky.

I think we carry three QBs this year.

I think Van Pelt and Porter are cut. If Porter isn't even taking snaps, then that shows us something. And Van Pelt keeps getting older.

But Zabransky is a fresh draft pick. I've never seen this team just out-and-out cut a first-year rookie that we drafted. Have you? We've placed them on practice squad, but we still kepth them going into the season.

Porter and Van Pelt are the odd men out, IMO.

Sage has too much "stock" since he almost came from behind and beat the Titans last year. He's also done well in the few times he came in for David in other games.

Zabransky wasn't drafted. He was an UDFA. And yes, they cut them all the time.

Porter just arrived from NFLE a few weeks ago. They might be giving him a little time off.

We didn't draft Zabransky, but I still don't think we cut him...

Edit:

Please check in ASAP on Saturday, Royal, after you see him. I'm a bit shakey with this position because our QB is new, Kubes is new, there's so much going on with learning and learning curves. I trust your judgement and assessment. I'm very eager to learn your thoughts here.

You should trust our head coach's judgement, too. Dude only played behind one of the NFL's greatest QB's in Elway, coached another great to an MVP and trophy (Young), and then was offensive coordinator for Elway's two NFL Championships. Kubiak knows quarterbacks, and Shaub is his man. End of story. :shades:

everyone say, "practice squad".

Ok, class over

Exactly, and there is no reason not to. The 3rd QB hardly ever sees game action, and Zabransky could always be activated from the practice squad, in an emergency situation or if you thought he had passed Van Pelt or Porter. Stash him for a year (which gives him a year of parctice with the coaches) and give him a serious look next year in camp.

It's what the Cowboys did, kinda, with Romo.

Can't they designate someone as an emergency backup on gameday that does not count against your game day active roster?

If so, I would tend to think they might want someone with experience in that role. I hear Van Pelt has looked like crap in camp, but I have seen him play and he is at least capable of moving the team, if inconsistently so. I would tend to favor him in that 3rd emergency role, with Zabransky on the practice squad.

The preseason games might change my mind though. :devilpig:

Maybe we can groom Zabransky to be a really great placekick holder :marionaner:

Van Pelt is the guy most of the Vince Young haters insinuate him to be...but Van Pelt is really like that...in real life. He is great with the ball in his hands but at some point he has to get rid of it...and that's where his troubles begin.

Zabransky can pull of a fake as we witnessed in the bowl game . His throwing needs some work but i think he can make a living for a couple of years as a backup .

Zabransky also has an edge to him ... wants to proove something . I kinda like that about him .

Kubiak will keep Matt and Sage with Zabransky on practice squad.

This happened last year with Porter on practice sqaud.

From what I hear Van Pelt hasen't throw well in TC and Porter only started half of the games in Europe so I can't put to much faith in him.

It's obviously way too early to tell, but in Saturday afternoon's practice Van Pelt looked quite a bit better than Zabransky. Apparently the tables have turned from what I hear now. I'll be at Thursday nights practice to get another look.:texflag:

Question 1: Is Van Pelt allowed to be put on the PS this season?
Question 2: Will Zabransky get snatched up if moved to the PS?

Question 1: Is Van Pelt allowed to be put on the PS this season?
No. Van Pelt has 2 accrued NFL seasons.

Question 2: Will Zabransky get snatched up if moved to the PS?
Not likely. Zabransky was passed over by every NFL team (including the Texans) for 7 rounds. If Zabransky isn't on the Texans opening roster, he could choose to play on another practice squad.

Thanks,

I would think Van Pelts chances of making the team is less because of this, correct?

I would venture to say Zabransky will be our 3rd QB and he'll be on the PS.

I disagree.

Things have happened to put teams in a situation of need for a young QB with potential. Atlanta is the biggest suitor in my mind considering they're starting a probable career backup like Kansas City and Vick, no matter what happens, won't come back to Atlanta.

Nobody is going after Zabransky.

I think we can all safely say that if Van Pelt or Zabransky see significant playing time this season, then the Texans will be terrible again.

My understanding is he has to clear waivers before being put on the PS, or is this only for drafted players? Once on the PS, if another team wants to sign him, they have to put him on the 45-man roster for a certain number of games. Is this correct?

In any case, he seems like a guy in a hurry to start. If he signed with another team's PS, he'd be a year behind.

Correct. If another team wants to sign your PS player, they must immediately add that player to their 53 man roster.
