Stanley vs Turk

For those who have gone to TC practices, how has Turk looked? I heard driving home Friday that he was booming them inside the bubble. Is he having as good practices outdoors? Finally good seeing the kickers have competition.
Turk has been around a while, and has always been a good punter, I just want to know if he still has the leg...

At the start of the Saturday afternoon practice, Joe Marciano had an organized punt team drill - full OL, Turk and Stanley alternating punts from around the goal line with several guys .. Wynn, Jacoby, Bethel, Mathis, Fletcher, etc., hanging around the opposite 40 or so.

Turk noticeably outkicked Stanley in hang time and distance - on several balls -- they probably kicked at least 15 each.. Turk is a big dude and the ball sounds much different coming off his foot than when Stanley kicks. Based on that short demo, I'd say Stanley's days are numbered.

I'd say Turk's punts are crisper ... less wobble and yes , more hang time .

I hope Turk really outshines Stanley. I have been really disappointed with his (Stanley's) punting.

from training camp notes:

Dueling punters: The addition of punter Matt Turk, a 12 year NFL veteran, to the training camp roster has led to a position battle for the starting punter spot. Along with incumbent punter Chad Stanley, Turk had an opportunity to show off his skills during the team’s practices Sunday.

Each of the two got an entire practice with all of the punting reps to themselves. Stanley started the day during the morning practice, averaging a healthy 50.3 yards per successful punt in thick, humid air with little wind. The disclaimer ‘successful’ is in use, however, because Stanley did have one punt blocked out of the back of the end zone. Turk got all of the time in the afternoon session, averaging 51.5 yards with a long of 64 yards indoors at the Methodist Training Facility. Expect the pair to continue their duel into training camp.

I dont know how in the world stanley is averaging over 50 yards per punt, but it still looks like Turk has the advantage in distance.

I missed the Saturday afternoon practice, but from what I saw Sat. morning it was the same story. Stanley might be getting the same distance, but ball height and as AJ put it the "sound" are completely different. (It almost looked like Reggie Roby in his heyday.) If this keeps up another week, and I was Stanley, I'd ask for my release to go find a job elsewhere.

This scares me. If there is only a 1.3 yard difference, they might opt to go with Chad.

couldnt have said it better my self. and he is a very nice guy was stopping and signing autographs and talkeing to people. he is a big dude.

That is a good article...I posted something on Turk a few weeks ago asking those of you TC watchers how that battle was shaping up...

SO, again, what does it look like at the practices guys? Is Turk still having a good camp and does it look like he has a chance to take the job??

This is one position I am finally glad that there is competition, now if we can find a good kicker !!

Distance vs placement. All things considered which is better for Texans? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5039369.html
Will there be a decrease in punt attempts this year with the improved offense?
I saw a good post by cloak on ht.com concerning this "finesse" vs power argument.

Keep in mind that Stanley, besides having a crumby punting average, only had 15 inside the 20 last year........in 16 games!

Turk had 26 inside the 20 in 16 games last year.

What most fans don't realize is that looking at careers in general, even Turk's consistency inside the 20 stats overshadow Stanley's. So what selling point is there left to Stanley??????

STANLEY'S STATS
TURK'S STATS

Who also happens to be the consummate power punter, a man with a career 42.5-yard average capable of routinely bouncing footballs off the ceiling of the Texans' practice bubble. One of his recent punts had yet to even crest when it ricocheted off the vinyl a couple hundred feet above the playing field.

Even he smiled at that one.
