Texans lineman Spencer out at least six weeks
Team had hoped left tackle would regain starting role

When the Texans hit the field on Friday for their first practice, left tackle Charles Spencer will not be allowed to join his teammates.

The Texans are placing Spencer on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning he will miss at least the first six games of the season.

The announcement deals a blow to the team's plans at offensive line. The Texans now enter camp with Ephraim Salaam as their starter at left tackle. Free agent Jordan Black will compete with Salaam for the starting job.

He was the only good O-Lineman we had.

Once again, our organization fails to realize games are won in the trenches. Yet, they go out and blow money on 30 year old running backs.

that blows...

When I was bangin' for Levi Brown.....way back in March, Both Beerlover and I told you this could happen. So what was that you were banging me about on the other thread there second honeymoon ?

It's not all bad they get to look at a young guy a few more weeks and delay a decidsion on him, Roster or PS. He's not gone for the year....but might be a good time next couple of weeks to look up Micheal Oher, OLT Old Miss. Interesting story. Reads like Dexter Manly II. And we will for a fact get to see Winston audition at OLT this preseason. And what I posted about that will come to fruition also.

You're wrong again. Yes. I will keep calling you out until you stop over generalizing like a girl.

Put a sock in it, no one finds you amusing.

Hey, fool! What cha talking about? signed Chester Pitts.

Your right, Chester Pitts is a pro-bowl caliber linemen!

Please, our line blows. Our D-Line is ready to be the best in the NFL, our Linebacking corps is getting there. Our Running backs are middle of the pack. Our receivers are getting there. Our QB's blow and our secondary is the worst in the NFL.

EDIT: Thank you Mr.*****, I'm quite fond of that comeback myself. Don't use it without my permission now. I know how you get emotional like a women with PMS.

And somehow the line got better the deeper we went in to last season, even though Spencer was injured.

Hmmmm.....faulty logic detected.

Rampage, do you ever slow down long enough to read what you type? You said no other "good" linemen. Now you say Pitts not a probowler. You are quickly losing my respect as a fair commentor. Pitts is a very good guard. Don't put words in my mouth.

No surprise here. A lot of people have been saying he would be put on PUP. Not sure aobut some of the sources we've seen, who've claimed he was doing well and getting better. I'm not sure he won't be out the entire season. And once again my faith in the line's ability to protect the QB is shaken. Salaam isn't meant to take the reins for the year.

Not a suprise at all. I had been expecting this move. I would have been shocked had he been able to go day 1. They need to go slow with him, and ease him back this year, with the hope that he is close to 100% next year. The truth is that he will probably never be the player he was destined to be, but maybe he can be 80 or 90% of that player on the high side, which is certainly good enough.

Just for clarity, could you explain "good enough." Cause there's good enough to start and there's good enough to back up the line, and I'm not ready to consider him good enough to start after this injury.

Once again - Thanks Ron Dayne!

No big suprise with this move. Maybe Tony is avaliable for 6 weeks?

This is very good news. He wasn't placed on IR. He was placed on PUP. They expect him to be available in October. This is the reason why Jordan Black was signed.

The best news is that his cartilidge has regrown and it sounds as though the doctor, Kubiak, and Charles are convinced the threat of a degernative condition are pretty well behind him.... If he's going to be a good/great LT, who cares about 6 weeks of one season being missed?!

doesn't shock me...I figure they think the bone will heal and properly in time if they don't push it since they brought in Black instead of drafting a young guy who wouldn't be ready to play by the time Spencer healed anyway. With Salaam and Black I think the position will be fine till Spencer gets back. My bigger concern is the right side of the line and how far Winston is coming along. I think Pitts will have a fine season fwiw.

I don't think this is a shock...

The Texans knew this was a possibility before this past draft occured...

I'm assuming the "it's healing " part means there is blood flow to the cartlidge. That is a good thing. His career is not over just delayed. I 'm going to prey for Salaam's health every night lol.

Agree, Matt Jackson and some others had been saying this over and over concerning the constant questions. However, I think the Texans have been waiting for this the whole time and moved forward with plans long ago.

At this point I gotta go along with Runner and some others who predicted he'd be out for "ALL' of 2007, leaving us with a best shot of him being ready for the 2008 season.
Putting him on PUP instead of going with the whole 9 yards of IR at this time is leaving the door open to hope (especially to Spencer himself), but realistically he's probably not a factor for this year at all given this announcement.
**
BTW, I see at the end of this story where the Bucs picked up C/G Lucas.

Actually from what I hear they will see his progress and then if he still can't go they will put him on IR..which is closer to the truth I bet. I don't necessarily believe they did it as a positive he will be ready but it gives him a chance to workout and see after the time is up. I don't think he will ever be 100%.

If he's not a factor this year, I'll go ahead and make the prediction that he won't be a factor next year. I'm not all that interested in third-year rookies, especially at left tackle.

If Spencer is healthy and fit for '08 camp, what would it matter? I agree that I wouldn't count on Spencer to be the starter, but I don't know why he wouldn't be worthy of competing for the LT job. I guess I'm not following your logic.

Hopefully, if Winston gets more first team reps, it will help out. They need to limit the experimentation time in the preseason, and get whoever they are picking used to playing together.

They are going to be trying Black out in both tackle positions.

Spencer out? Who knew???

The reality is now staring everyone in the face. Can Salaam play an entire season without being slowed by cumulative wear or a bigger injury? Can Black play better than he did last year? Whither Winston?

This will be an interesting year for Schaub's tutelary o-lineman.
