I think Blank will release him as soon as he gets home today from Africa.

Being released is as good as suspended.. because no team will pick him up.. Mike is as "radioactive" as his younger brother..
 
Meanwhile Falcons owner Arthur Blank was at team headquarters in Flowery Branch, after returning from vacation in Africa. He was said to be in meetings with team personnel.

Falcons executives had made no additional public statements or appearances by mid-morning. On Tuesday evening the team issued an unsigned statement saying it was "disturbed" by the indictment.


An initial hearing date for Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is expected to be set Wednesday in federal court in Richmond, Va., where U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson will handle the dog-fighting case that has put Vick's career in jeopardy.

Shortly after opening at 8:30 a.m., the clerk's office for the court told the AJC that a summons in the case could be issued Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile Falcons owner Arthur Blank told the AJC Wednesday that he had just arrived from a trip to Africa and was "greeted" with the news of Vick's indictment. He planned to spend the day gathering facts and talking with league and team officials.

Blank said the team could have a statement or an announcement later Wednesday. So far, its only comment was an unsigned statement Tuesday evening saying it was "disturbed" by the indictment.

They're not going to do anythign untill they actually have his conviction notice in their hands. Federal Prosecutors do not bring charges lightly for those of you holding out hope. They go into court with more than intentions in their hands.

Agreed, but what about Pac-Man then? I think he's a thug too, but I don't see any convictions. He's already been suspended, why not Vick?

This may tell the tale of how much $$$ the NFL sees in Vick...by how different they handle him vs. Pac-Man.

Thats exactly why I think he probably will get suspended before hand. The entire country is watching Goddell to see if he's consistent. If he does nothing, people would say that he caters to the super stars - just for the buck. If he suspends him, people will say, at least he's consistent and really does care about the image of the NFL.
 
I think that Vick will be given time off to prepare for his trial and sort out his life. Atleast that'll be the wording used by teh Falcons and teh NFL, in reality he will have been asked to go away till all of this is sorted out...one way or another.

Pac-Man had several incidents that he was involved in to his credit...

And Pac-Man served jail time...

Pac-Man was involved in incidents where he was at a club carrying guns, people getting shot, and biting people on the ankle...

These situations are not the same at all, because if Vick is found innocent then that means he didn't do anything other than be naive...

I doubt he'll be found innocent, but he and Pac-Mans situations aren't the same...
 
The thing we need to keep in mind here is that the NFL is not a court of law it is a business. The Falcons and NFL are not bound by evidence rules. They can suspend or release any player whose conduct (alleged or otherwise) discredits the team or the league.

This innocent until proven guilty mantra will fall by the way side if the public backlash is severe enough to affect profits or the NFL's image. You can whine about it all you want, but that is the cold hard truth.

I will be shocked if no action is taken by the league or the team before the trial. Personally, I could care less about what happens to the Falcons or Vick. I will not lose any sleep over what happens to him.

I was listening to Mike & Mike this morning and they brought up a point in that the first suspension for Vick will be for lying to the commish.

If I'm not mistaken, Pac-man was convicted of crimes prior to joining the NFL.
 
Then the commisioner is not consistent and it undermines the positive steps he has taken to clean-up the image of the NFL. In addition, this is also bad for the Atlanta Falcons in that a trial of this magnitude can only be a distraction for the team... If I was the Owner, I would consider suspending him and keeping him as far away from the team until he can rectify his legal issues....

Can you imagine the abuse the Falcons will take on the road this season, because of that P.O.S.!!!

I disagree that it is showing a double standard. Qubert and Henry both had several incidents and then you look at Tank johnson and he was not suspended until he was realeased from jail. So I think Goodell is being very consistant with how he has handled each case.

I also understand the league office when it says it does not want to influence the jury if they suspended him now. I do not see the inconsistancy at all.

It's not like Ron Mexico's past is crystal clear. Giving the gift that keeps on giving (Herpes) and flipping fans off...

The influencing a jury has some merit, but then again the case itself will influence a jury being in the media as it is. Point being is, if he was suspended a football fan would know - and again, a football fan already knows that he's been indicted too.
 
The Falcons could easily make a case for conduct detrimental to the team, even without a conviction. An employer doesn't necessarily have to abide by "innocent until proven guilty" in this case. I don't know what the CBA allows the teams to do, so I can only speculate, but if Vick was a scrub, he'd be gone already. That tells me that the case can be made to release him, even before a conviction. A conviction, in that scenario, only determines his legal status, not his employment status.

That is why I think the team should suspened him. McKay has talked all along about how high he values character. well here is his chance to show what kind of stones he's got. Are they made of brass or are they made of sand and will crumble at the very onset of a little pressure.
 
I posted this in the other Vick thread so I will post it here too, as it fits the current discussion (why do we need two threads on this?)

Based on the facts we already know, he should be suspended for one year NOW. If the bulk of the rest of the allegations prove to be true, then he deserves a lifetime ban.

Roger Godell has had a very impressive start to his tenure, and has cracked down on some of these miscreants like Pacman. Now, all the sudden, we see that there is indeed a two-tiered structure of justice in Godell's kingdom. One set of rules for the Pacman's and one set for the Ron Mexico's. Very disapointing. I am going to send an email to the NFL offices. Anyone else that feels he should be suspended should do the same.

Late edit: I cannot find anything on nfl.com with the nfl offices email. They have their physical address. Who is going to take the time to mail a letter? Apparently, they don't want the input of the fans - you know, the people that actually pay their salaries. I find all of this totally unacceptable. :devilpig:

And, I also agree with Eriadoc about "conduct detrimental....". Too bad players don't 'get' this when they sign their contracts. This clause in the boiler plates of every contract means, 'WE' (the teams) have the right to can yo a$$ if WE feel like you screwed up and could tarnish the image of the team.

However, the AJC could not independently confirm the report Thursday morning. Falcons and NFL officials spoke late into Wednesday night, and team officials had more conference calls Thursday."

In other developments:

• A county prosecutor in Virginia said it is "more than likely" that Vick will face local as well as federal charges. Surry County, Va. prosecutor Gerald Poindexter's comment was reported in the Virginian-Pilot newspaper. Poindexter did not indicate to the paper what charges would be filed or what evidence local authorities had in the case.

Poindexter had told the AJC on Monday, the day before Vick was indicted, that he had not received one investigative report in the case.

Hmm very interesting.... perhaps the Feds knew that Poindexter would leak what was really going on...

Innocent until proven guilty folks. You can't compare this to the Chris Henry Tank Johnson or Pacman incidents b/c those guys were multiple offenders & though Vick has been linked to unsavory stories in the past, he is still a first time offender....... unlike pacman & the gang. I do often wonder though if some big real estate guy would be treated the same way if it were found that something like this were found to be going on on one of his properties. My guess is probably not.

Goodell is handling it just fine, although i wouldn't be surprised if Blank makes some sort of move. You just have to remember, Blank is a business man & he knows that if Vick isn't on the field for him, he's going to lose serious profits. You also have to figure in the fact that the Falcons have absolutely NOONE who can even come close to the producing what Vick does on the field despite him not being able to throw the ball all that well.

Joey Harrington?........ DJ shockley?.............................. Dante Culpepper maybe?
 
Generally, many states have laws from an employer firing a person unless there's a conviction or admission of guilt. It's unlikely the Falcons will can Vick. The NFL, however, could suspend him since the NFLPA signed off on the conduct policy.
 
I think the subtle difference of Vick is that he doesn't have a lengthy arrest record.

Tank Johnson and Pacman were suspended because they kept getting arrested over and over.

Now if Vick gets arrested on some other charge on an unrelated incident to the dog fighting issue, he probably gets suspeneded immediately.

As horrible as this stuff is, it is his first arrest. So, he gets the benefit of the doubt.

Not that I agree with this, but I think that is the arguement for consistentcy when applying the new conduct policy.
 
The best way to get Vick suspended, don't go to the games.

Poor attendence for the Falcons away games would mean teams other than the Falcons are getting hit in the pocket book.

Which would bring more pressure on the Falcons to do the right thing.

IMO the way you worded it would be the smartest thing Blank could do. Publically offer Vick the chance to have time off to prepare for a trial and to get his things in order. I really can't imagine such a huge distraction would be let onto the field and locker room. Locally i'm wondering how many ATL fans will turn but i know road games will be killer this year if he's at the helm. There'd prolly be protests outside the stadiums and inside could get nasty as well. I know for the most part of all the major league sports in the world the NFL has kept a predominately classy fan base.....well the raiders don't count though.

I just think it'd be too much of a circus to have Vick in TC and beyond and if he's a team player he'd understand it just as much. It'd prolly be the most classy thing he could do in the situation is step back himself with some grace.At a time where he NEEDS some goood PR...this would get it.

nope. we play the falcons so they are playing the AFC South.

bottom line is that it doesn't matter where the Falcons play. He is going to be reaping some serious garbage upon him and the rest of his team. Even the home games are going to be protested and he will be booed mercilessly by some of his own fans in the Georgia Dome. Geez, he was already being booed before all this garbage came down. its gonna be a trainwreck of that there is no question.

I actually think the Falcons could have a better season without him.
call me crazy but I think the distractions, general adversity, and hostile environments could really hurt this team. If they are smart they just get rid of the scumbag and sign Culpepper and let Joey or DJ Shockley take the reigns. Once Cully gets healthy (if) then there would be competition and possible huge payoff with little risk in Cully. Worst case scenario, they suck and get an early pick which they would take Brohm in the 08 Draft and reunite him with Petrino his college coach.

If the NFL stays the course, there is a little part of me that will enoy it. it is going to be a trainwreck and there could be some serious drama and some serious organized fan heckling. The first group of fans that start chanting 'Who Let The Dogs Out' at him need to be immortalized on NFL Films. it's gonna be celebrity drama that is for sure...and what does America love more than that? nothing.
 
The feds are not some podunk sheriff / prosecutor in a small town. These guys are the real deal, and they have a 95%+ conviction rating in that particular district.

This 'innocent until proven guilty' routine is for legal battles in courts. But the fact is that if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and flies like a duck, it ain't a freakin' chicken!

Court of public opinion says that you can put pressure on Nike and other NFL / Falcons sponsors, and that will determine Vick's public fate more than anything else. A conviction will just confirm what most people already believe.

As far as the race card, Al Sharpton says you're full of it. :joker:
