Is Cedric Benson worth a 1st round pick?

My opinion . . . NO!

He just doesn't impress me as someone who has the tools to succeed at the NFL level. He doesn't have anything that stands out as far being able to get separation or break tackles. It appears that he's only successful running behind a blue-chip offensive line in the Longhorns scheme.

But somehow, I just get the feeling the NFL scouts are asking, "where's that explosive burst off the line, and where is that great open field speed?"

He doesn't even display those qualities in college. In the NFL, it's a lot faster.

Can you say, "Jonathan Wells"?

Yes he is worth a 1st round pick. He is I think only the 5th or so player to have 4 consecutive 1000 yard seasons. That is amazing. He will get picked anywhere from 4-10.

And the team that picks him will eventually regret it, I'm afraid.

Nope, but there are more than one horns though. Burnt orange glasses are blinding them. Can't see that Cedric really isn't very fast. Strong, runs hard, but just not all that fast.

This is unreal. I live in Austin, but am not a big Longhorn fan. Heck, I dont really even like College football. But this guy is one of the best running backs to come out of the NCAA in a looong time.

And what is with all the speed comments? Yes he is not as fast as some of the other backs, but he is the most powerful runner in years. Guys like Preist, and Bettis dont wow you with their speed. Yet they are some of the greatest backs in NFL history.

Hey, I live in Houston, and I'm neither a Longhorn fan, or an Aggie fan. The ONLY reason why I even watch college football, is to watch for future NFL prospects. And I've seen a great number of power backs in college this year to know that Cedric Benson is way overrated, IMO.

I find this hilarious. I wish in five years I could find some of you and rub your id iotic comments back in your faces.

He can definitely improve before he is a great NFL back, but he is worth a first round pick. He can catch the ball and run it well. His college numbers are very good partly bc he has had such a good O-line and dual threat offense with the passing game being good (better before Young was there) but even Young took a lot of the attention off Benson. He'll be a good back in the NFL because he gets through the holes and up the field.

Will and should be the first back taken in the 2005 NFL draft, has great vision and power a workhorse and will pound it out late in the game. Not a burner but has an unexpected burst through the line, I think that he can run 4.5s which isnt bad for a back his size, just as fast as S.Jackson was last year but better in other aspects of the game.

some people would use that to strengthen their argument that he isn't that good.

The same people that criticized him for having Roy Williams at the top when he was a Soph? Could these people be jealous AGs by any chance?

Benson is the best back in the draft. Sure he has a great line but when you look at the numbers you also have to consider that he has always, I repeat always the center of the offense in high school, during the Simms era, and Young era and the defense always focusses on stopping him but fail. You can't comprehend how durable he is, in High school at Midland Lee where he was the focus of the offense since his freshman year he played in every game, thats four years plus playoffs. And the Rebels always make it deep into the playoffs so that is almost 5yrs of being the focus and then 4 yrs of college pounding and he never loses a beat. 4 yrs of 1,000 yrds in college and you don't think he is 1st rd material you are nuts. I guarentee you that if he was available when the texans pick they pick him.

Making the comment that Cedric lacks the ability to break tackles ruins any credibility.

If he lacks break away speed and can't break tackles, that would tell me he should be dropped at the LOS every play. And don't give me this "blue-chip" OL stuff either. They only started playing to their potential mid-way through last season.

You don't rack up the 5th highest total in NCAA history without having some ability.

Cedric does not have break away speed. But he does have the burst to get through the hole. And he knows how to run with patience which is infinately more important than breakaway speed.

All those that say he can't succeed because he's not a burner are the same guys that think the WRs that run the fastest 40 are the better WRs.

as usuall I have to side with Huge. just remember as prospect skills translates to the NFL, teams use different offenses with different personel therfore a better prospect may be passed for a better fit for that particluar team (offensive scheme, size & speed of lineman, character etc. etc....) This should not detract from that individuals abilities or success at the next level, as a matter of fact it should help fit that indivdiual into the best system that fits his skills, thats if the scouting department is doing its job.

I agree here. Benson sheds off tacklers every run. Watch some gametape, and see how many times the first guy slides off him, or gets run over, or gets stiff armed.

My point is that he gets the tough yards, and does so by breaking tackles, and moving the pile with his huge legs.
