Freeney Hits The Jackpot!

This is just another nail in the coffin of the Colts. It ain't happenin' this year, but they can't spend like this much longer before it starts effecting the rest of the roster. We already saw the beginning of this deteroriation this offseason. Things will happen just like they did with the Cowboys. Roster attrition, then a few injuries, and next thing you know the Colts are picking 4th overall annually....

I can't wait till Peyton retires and the Colts become the laughingstock that they were pre-Peyton. The Colts will suck, the Jags will still suck, and the Titans could be in LA for all we know. The Texans could be the class of the division within the next 4-5 years. I would love nothing more than to be the ruler of the AFC South for 2010 and beyond. Hopefully we can achieve some modicum of success before then as well.

Weren't the colts having cap issues, not more than two seasons ago??

I think Freeney is a good player, but I wonder, would he be the same player with a team that didn't play on fast turf in a dome 8 times a year.

If he is now the highest paid D player ever, then how does that stack up agaisnt the most highly compensated offensive players ?
Perhaps this will be instructive to ESPN who has been known to be critical of teams who pay or draft very high for DE ? Especially what a highly rated organzation like the defending SB champs will pay for a steller DE is very meaningful. I don't think a single running back or wide receiver in the league makes this kind of money ?

"Freeney, the Indianapolis Colts' franchise player, signed a six-year, $72 million contract with the team Friday that includes a $30 million signing bonus. He becomes the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history."

mario's contract isnt much less iirc so its not very ridiculous at all

I guess it's similar. And yes, it's still ridiculous.:shades:

Houston signed Williams to a six-year, $54 million contract, with $26.5 million guaranteed. San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith, the top pick in last year’s draft, got a six-year, $49.5 million contract from the 49ers, with $24 million guaranteed.

Mario gets 9mil and Freeney gets 12mil. Granted, Mario aint earning the money yet but 3million annually is a big difference in pay.

Pass rushing is one of the most coveted traits a NFL team desires. One reason we are so bad.

I am just hoping we can assemble a defense like Holovak did for Buddy that one glorious regular season. That was far and away the best season to watch the Oilers. That 4-6 defense just rocked the NFL. Remember that win against Steve Young and the 49ers in Candlestick. Oh man that was a freaking season. Just a bunch of card carrying asswhoopers on defense that just got after the QB like no team since the 85 Bears. You could just tell that teams came into games against us and were already panicking. Best defense ever by a Houston franchise. The DL would just be frothing at the mouth and there was one game where they threw Neil O'Donnell around like a pinata on national television....just a great moment destroying the Steelers on national tv

Too bad Montana rained on that last parade that one fateful afternoon at the Dome.....

Premiere pass rusher, CB capable of neutralizing the opponents top WR (AKA as a "shutdown-corner"), and a LT who can successful defend the opponents
weakside edge rusher are arguable the NFLs 3 most highly valued types of players after of course the franchise QB whos value is above all others.

If Freeney got a 72 mil. dollar deal........ J. Peppers should get a deal approaching 100 million. Thats how big the gap is between Freeney and Peppers.
