Oliver a Charger, Gaither a Raven

im pissed. we could have gotten gaither for a 5th??????kid had a first round 08 draft grade on him. in a position that, guess what, we need. that pisses me off

A 4th for Oliver and a 5th for Gaither...I would have paid that price for either of these two, but then again how often do Supplemental draft guys pan out?

Smith and Kubes have been good evaluators of talent. They saw somethign they didn't like.

GREAT BLUE NORTH DRAFT REPORT
NEWS AND INFORMATION ON THE NFL DRAFT

Jared Gaither, LT, Maryland… 6-9, 325, JR, 5.15… Entered the 2007 summer supplemental draft when he was declared academically ineligible for the upcoming season; technically would only have been a true junior this fall, but is eligible to jump to the pros because he attended a prep school for a year after high school. Imposing physical presence with the potential to be a shut down LT at the next level; indeed, may be about the closest thing to current Baltimore Pro Bowler Jonathan Ogden to come along in a while, but is still just starting to scratch the surface of his talent; relative newcomer to football who was a basketball player in high school and actually originally signed to play hoops with South Carolina before switching to football; played only one year of prep football and that at DT; tall player with a huge wingspan; naturally strong with good athletic skills including a 36-inch vertical leap which would have been three inches more than the highest figure at this year’s combine; runs well for a big man and is very nimble on his feet; slides around the pocket with ease and can change directions; has excellent balance and can change directions; athletic knee bender, but needs to concentrate on keeping his pads low all the time; not exactly a road grader but is a solid enough run blocker who gets good position and locks on with long arms; did not allow a sack in 2005 when he started every game at LT for the Terps replacing an injured Stephon Heyer; maturity came into question last fall, though, when he reportedly sulked and got into the coaches’ doghouse after being moved to RT when Heyer was granted another year of eligibility; was suspended briefly at camp last fall and was later suspended from last year's bowl game for violating team rules, although it likely related to missing classes; also battled some nagging injuries late last season… Based on pure physical potential, Gaither may be the best supplemental draft prospect since Bernie Kosar was taken with what turned out to be a #1 pick overall back in the late 1980s, but is a real wild card because of concerns about his level of maturity and work ethic. Complicating the decision for many teams will be the fact that the 2008 draft looks like it will be relatively deep at OT. Teams that use a supplemental pick will, of course, lose their selection in that round at the 2008 draft and teams thinking about bidding on Gaither with an early supplemental choice will have to try and project where they will pick next April and which OTs are likely to be available at that time.

I guess it's an attitude thing .

I love the Texans but I reserve the right to be critical of them when I think they make mistakes or fail to jump on opportunities. Having said that I think the Texans have developed a reputation for making stupid decisions. That reputation has me thinking that passing on Gaither is another stupid Texans decision.

Gary Kubiak and Rick Smith have a ways to go to convince me that they're not just making more stupid Texans decisions. I hope my knee jerk feeling on this is wrong.

I said something to this effect before the 2005 draft and got creamed as a rookie poster . Now it's accepted until they establish a track record of having more snap than a wet saltine .

Don't confuse the previous administration for this one. That would be like blaming Bush for getting a hummer from Monica Lewinsky. :devilpig:

well this is gong to bite us on the ass when salaam gets injured and black has to start (ive a very strong, bad feeling it will happen).. a 5th??? only the second decision ive hated by kubes and smith (after vernando)

You do understand he would be a rookie don't you? He also would be a rookie tackle and they are known for greatness, especially ones that go in the supplimental draft because they are not smart enough to keep there grades up at the ivy league school known as Maryland.

I can't agree more. Gaither is a physical freak and a top notch OT prospect. There will be no one in the 5th Round next year with even a fraction of his potential. Kubiak and Smith must be asleep at the wheel because Gaither was easily worth a 4th Round pick much less a LATE 5th round. Black better be damn good is all I gotta say.

And this is the worst part. You know this and I know this, but why can't the Texans figure this out. Late rounds like the 5th, 6th, and 7th are full of players that often don't pan out, so the Texans would be risking the opportunity to draft a player that might not pan out for a player with the potential to be equal to a 1st or 2nd round player. It look to me like a Low Risk/ High Reward move.

A few years ago many fans could not understand why Onterrio Smith fell to the 4th round.....then the public got to know the pothead RB that only Ricky Williams would love, or possibly Pacman and his Krazy Klown Krew he hangs out with. Sometimes the fans really don't get to see background checks or medical histories. There is a reason teams didn't want to spend first day money on either one of these guys. Justified? Only time will tell us.

A 5th round Supplemental draft choice doesn't get 1st day money.

that was my whole point....perhaps the reason(s) why these kids won't make top dollar as first day picks will be justified over time. We'll see.

has he been busted for grass? i thought his suspension was for academic reasons. i do agree that as fans we dont get the whole story and there could be stuff we don't know and he is at least guilty of not being committed to his college team. my thing is that we could have had him for a 5th round pick and could possibly have made some contribution by the end of the season. i know that the denver ZBS scheme has been famous for making good OL out of lower draft picks but it needs to happen soon or there will be more egg on the face of Kubes.

Not being a good enough student to pass History, Math or English, doesn't mean that he won't be smart enough to play Football at a high level.

My thoughts too. Guess I'll go with Kubes on this. Isn't 2008 a strong draft for LTs?

What kind of mileage did Clinton get? As I seem to recall, it was talked about forever.

Another thought, if I am correct that next draft is good for LTs and by then we will know more about Spencer, Black, et al; I could see us going for one in first or third round. My issue was either of these supplemental draft players would be a full season advanced over who we could draft in 08. I just did not think Gaither would play much this season anyway.

you do understand black, in a word, sucks (you know actually on the field- maybe hes v booksmart though which obviously makes up for it) dont you? and even salaam is viewed in a very rosy light around here imo.. all gaither would have to do is be adequate to have been more than worth it.. but you want to act like everything is rosy at LT right now?- fine come back in october

hopefully spencer makes a miracle recovery or something

ahmad brooks is working out fine for the bengals so far aswell

btw has anybody snapped up that other T from nebraska yet??

you guys should know by now that character means a hell of a lot to Bob McNair & Co. long before Roger Goodell became the comish :cowboy1:

frankly I'd like to see the NFL do away with the supplemental draft & just let these troubled players reach some kinda undrafted free agent deal thats a win win for both the teams & the players. obviously it pays to stay in school & abide by the rules thats a strong message in itself :shades:

I am going to throw in my two cents here.

First, Spencer is still expected to be back back at some point this year right? Unless I have missed something. I have been out of town for the last two and a half months so that is possible. From what I am heard he wants to be back for opening day or if he is put on the pup then we are looking at the middle of the year. He is not like TonyB. No one has said anything about career ending since he has been in rehab. With that little bit of knowledge I don't see why we should give up a draft pick on a position we already have filled.

Which brings me to my next point.

We go into the 08' draft down a second rounder. I don't see a real successful draft having only five of seven draft picks. Thats not how you build a solid team. We may need that 5th or 4th round pick to move back into the second.

This team is still a little ways from being a contender. Still need Safeties, still need OLB, a pass rush DE, a CB.......

I don't see us being a true contender until next year.

But that is just my opinion.

I agree and it's not like the Texans were the only one's that passed on him with a chace to draft him using 1st-4th round valued picks.

Obviously they disagreed with you. There was too much baggage there for them to swallow. Might of been they thought the fan base couldn't tollerate OLT failure #4. I'm just glad they didn't spend a first day pick on the guy. Black sucks as an OLT canidate and they know it. They are counting on Salaam making it six games untill, Spencer has a chance to get back. I'm sure they didn't want to do gamble like that. Stated that publicly. But Grimm wasn't going to let Levi Brown get by him. And Okoye had too much up side to let pass. They could of moved down. But Okoye was just too good a prospect. They go with what they have in '07.
