Kevin Walter's Competition

When i heard Kevin Walter was the potential starter on the other side of Andre i was in shock, u would think the texans would put another weapon on the opposing side of our offensive mvp but im seriously thinking that we have other guys that r faster and has better hands, than Walter

Think about it we have:

Jacoby Jones
Andre Davis
Bethel Johnson
Jerome Mathis

So tell me what u think about other our potential starters.
Who would best fit our offense opposing andre?

I personally think KW will rise to the occasion and prove himself worth of the #2 spot. This could be wishful thinking, but Kubiak has made some really positive comments about him in the recent past.

But, I think he'll get some stiff competition from Jones and Davis. Both of these guys seem to have the speed and potential to compete for the spot.

I'm just not sold that Johnson will get over the attitude that seems to have plagued him his entire pro career, and I doubt Mathis' catching abilities right now.

I think this is going to be a very interesting part of training camp.

I expect KW to step up and be a great #2. I think he's going to take over the possession type of role from AJ. I expect AJ to be used further down the field than he had been.

After that, it gets interesting. I don't know if Jacoby is going to be ready to contribute much at this point. If Mathis is healthy, he could be a great deep threat.... but I think he's hanging by a thread at this time. Bethel and Davis, they've got to come in and show Kubiak something.

Maybe Schuab is a lot better than people think or expect, which will carry over to other positions on the field.

Brady did very nice with Jabar Gaffney late last season.

My point is, the QB position can make other players better around him.

Hopefully, Schuab is that guy.

This isn't a single sided equation.

Anyone know a guy by the name Mike Furrey. He was a slot reciever for St.Louis and also played safety. He never got a chance to prove he can be a #2 reciever. Lions gave him a chance last year and look what he did. 98 receptions 1086 yards. Doing that playing next to a great reciever in
Roy Williams. I am not saying Walters will have that kind of season but he can at least do have of that. 50 receptions? I would be happy with that.

Andre Davis is not going to make this team IMHO

Jerome Mathis will never be anything past a 4th reciever, maybe a 3rd, and if he can get his hammies right a great return man...

I think Bethel Johnson makes this team as a return man and 4th/5th reciever reciever...

I don't think KW has any real competition besides Jacoby...

I haven't seen any footage of Jacoby past a couple TC tidbits I've seen of him...I absolutely love the way Jacoby moves (I'd like to see him return punts for us), I love his size, and I love the confidence...I truly think Jacoby is going to be a playmaker for us and will be starting at WR2 opposite Andre by week 5 if not right out of the gates after pre-season...

I think you're right, King.

Walter may have been anointed #2, but I think once training camp starts, Jacoby is the guy to beat.

I don't see Mathis making it.

I hope you're right about that, man!

JJ has had a couple of good stories that indicate he's got the drive to dedicate himself to being a great player. He grew up smaller than his peers, and didn't gain any size until much later. But he's got the heart of a guy that wants to compete and excel. That's always a good thing combined with skills.

And we got good players in later rounds last year, so why not hope it happens again?

I doubt there is much that will change Kubs mind at this point as to who the #2 is, and that KW. I think Jacoby is basically penciled in at #3 also. Which leaves 4 and 5 open. You have Mathis, Johnson, Davis, Anderson, Adams, Onrea, and Richardson all competing. Of those only Johnson, Davis, and Anderson have legit shots IMO, Mathis is along shot to me.

Johnson and Mathis are KO return guys, and Anderson is a PR. Dont Forget that we have Dexter Wynn in KOR/PR, and Jacoby. Roc Alexander is also a KO return guy.

I think Wynn and Alexander will be on the team again this year, so you have depth at both KO and PR. Pencil in JJ as KO/PR #2 or maybe #1. Johnson will probably take the #4 spot and #1 or #2 spot at KO. Number 5 is a toss up between Anderson and Davis, and I give the edge to Anderson.

The biggest wild card here is Mathis. I honestly dont think he will make it out of camp, but if for some reason he does he will take the #4/5 spot and main KO duties. Kubs isnt the type of coach that will keep one dimensional depth players on the roster over another player with versatilty, even if player 2 isnt as quite as good as player 1.

I disagree....

Kevin Walter is the exact opposite of a proven thing. He's not someone who you can 'pencil' in. Andre Johnson, Matt Schaub, Demeco, Mario, Dunta, Amobi, Ahman, and maybe a few others are the kind of guys you 'pencil' in....Kevin Walter is a nobody at this point...Although he's caught a few balls in limited minutes he hasn't shown any propensity for greatness...He hasn't even shown that he can be pretty good over a decent time span...If any other reciever on this roster noticeably out-plays him in the earlier part of the season (this including pre-season) he will be replaced...

Jacoby Jones: Young, raw but could be the guy someday
Andre Davis: I've asked about this guy too. Many on this board have told me that they don't necessarily expect him to be around for the season.
Bethel Johnson: Speed, experience and an option for returning kicks, but some baggage that has followed him around.
Jerome Mathis: Needs to mature or grow up or something. Nagging injuries and you get the feeling Kubes is fed up and looking to cut him.

Why does everyone think Mathis is immature ?

Just a note, but when you "pencil" someone in, it really means that you're not very sure of that player. You're writing their name in pencil instead of in ink.

So, for me, penciling KW and JJ in really means that their jobs aren't that secure.

I realize that it was Kravix that used the phrase first and I'm not really sure if he meant the phrase the right way or if he meant that JJ was assured of a job.

Personally i didnt use the phrase to mean that there were doubts, it just sounds better than saying pened them in. To me saying "they are a lock" and "penciled in" are the same thing.

I'm just letting you know that even though "penciled in" means "lock" to you, it doesn't mean that to the rest of the world. So, you're saying it to mean lock, and people are reading it to mean the exact opposite.

Because he has admitted that his attitude could improve. Well, and he had the ***** motorcycle accident. And getting into a fist fight with someone on the team much bigger than he is. And John McClain was sore at him for showing up late to the Pro Bowl photo shoot. And for being uncooperative with the media.

Historically, big guys don't make great return men. Small guys get through creases better, they are harder to spot and typically the long strides that big guys take is not conducive to the quick acceleration needed to hit the seam and run through it.
