Cowboys release Marco Rivera

I wasn't sure if this had been discussed. This, according to the Sunday Chronicle, officially moved Leonard Davis to guard for them.

"Veteran offensive guard Marco Rivera was released Thursday by the Dallas Cowboys.

Rivera, 35, underwent two surgeries on his back in two seasons with the Cowboys, who inked him to a five-year, $20-million US contract on March 3, 2005.

Marco Rivera was released Thursday.
(Ronald Martinez/Getty Images) Rivera sustained a bulging disc in his lower back when he was running on a treadmill the week after signing with the Cowboys, but recovered in time to start 14 games before suffering a strained neck.

The three-time Pro Bowler started all 16 regular-season games last season, but reinjured his back in a stunning 21-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC wild-card game.

Rivera played 106 consecutive games (1998-2004) for the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him in the sixth round (208th overall) out of Penn State in the 1996 NFL draft.

Rivera has two fumble recoveries in 155 games as a pro, including 141 starts."

As much as we over spent on Todd Wade (who was afterall a tackle), it's not that much in comparison to what the Cowboys have invested in guards.
I'm thinking they've got over 10 Mil guaranteed money in Davis, who will be playing on the inside. And I think that was their intend all along for him ?
Of course this whole craziness on what teams are paying for guards started with Hutchison who the Vikes got in FA after he played several years for the Seahawks.

I'd take a shot at him if the price was right. He might ask for much more than he's really worth though.

Jerry sure threw a lot of money at Davis for him to play guard. If true, I think they could have saved some money and signed a comparable player for less cash.

Who cares though....it's the 'girls.

Speaking from the point of view of someone who's had the same kind of back problems that Rivera has had - I wouldn't spend much on him. Two back surgeries in two years? I just don't think you could count on him.

Being 35 years old isn't a plus either.

Not to mention, as far as the Texans are concerned, guard is the least of our worries.
